Ubuntu :: Terminal Icon Won't Show In Sidebar?
Jul 23, 2011
The icon for the terminal won't show in the side bar on my desktop when it is running. Is there anyway I can get it back or fix this issue? I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal).

I see many people are a little uneasy with the new desktop of Ubuntu. I think it's marvelous, though... Not because of a reason other than just that a change after a short while is always good.
So, in the Gnome desktop, I would go to gconf-editor and set some keys and I'd get my computer folder and home folder shortcut on my desktop.
This time since the unity desktop has come with a nice sidebar, I'd like to put the same icon there, in the sidebar. But I can't even access computer as Computer:/// anymore... What to do?

I tried xdg-desktop-icon command. It does install a shortcut. The shortcut works when double clicked. But the shortcut is shown as a standard icon, not the icon defined in the .desktop file. Do I miss something?

I'm looking for a way to may the open windows show just an icon on the taskbar instead of the icon/text/rectangle that's default. Something similar to Windows 7.

I have a favorite REXX program called fv2. When I was a Windows user I had an icon for fv2 on the Quick Launch bar. Click that icon, and the program ran. Now, as a Linux (Ubuntu) user it is necessary to go through several steps to run fv2.
1) Launch a terminal by clicking on the terminal icon at the top of the screen. What's that area called? The GNOME panel?
2) Enter: ~/Desktop/RexxScripts
3) Enter: regina fv2
I run fv2 several times per day and would really like to have the convenience of a clickable icon.

I use default ambiance theme.
I love this theme, but show desktop icon is ugly.
It looks like some theme has show desktop icon in theme folder, but others are not.
How can I change icon? I think it's ubuntu's default show desktop icon.

I am using pogodynka.sh to try and get conky to show the temperature and incorporate and icon from weather.ttf to show a graphical depiction... i.e. a sun for sunny, a cloud with a lightening bolt for thunder...
I have managed to get it working in the past (about a year ago) Now I am unable to get the icon to show, the font is installed and being used by other parts of the same instance of conky. However the pogodynka DOES state the temperature. I just have no graphical representation of that, thus it creates a big blank spot in the middle of my conky....

This is a super tiny detail that most people probably don't even notice, but why is the show desktop button icon cut off? It looks really weird.
I don't think it was like that in 9.10. Is there any way to fix it?

I hate the purple "Show Desktop Icon" in Lucid and I finally figured out how to change it:
1) sudo apt-get install wmctrl
2) Create the following script and proceed as directed within the script's comments:
#!/bin/sh
# GLD's Show Desktop Button script. Here's how to do it.
# sudo apt-get install wmctrl
# Right click on the panel and select "Add To Panel".
# Choose "Custom Application Launcher".
# Use the file name of this script for the Command.
# Use whatever icon that you want. The generic Ubuntu Show_Desktop_Button icon is located here:
# /usr/share/gnome/help/user-guide/C/figures/show_desktop_button.png
if [ -f /tmp/toggle_show_desktop_$USER ]thenwmctrl -k off
rm /tmp/toggle_show_desktop_$USER elsewmctrl -k on
touch /tmp/toggle_show_desktop_$USERfi

I don't know what could be causing it, but my Icons from the panel sometimes won't show the whole icon, sometimes it show two icons overlapping each other, I was hoping it would be that I should have set the Panel size according to a "better" and standard Icons size, but that did'nt solve the problem as I changed to 48px; does anyone have a clue what could be causing it?

This is just one of those annoying but superficial things: When I empty my recycle bin, the items fully delete (as far as I can tell) but the icon for the trash remains a full trash can. I have 10.04

I deleted all APs in my Wireless Section of network manager. After that, the whole network manager icon disappeared. I added the icon back on the panel, but I don't think its the right one. It doesn't do the two green cicles thing when I connect my ethernet wire in. It also doesn't show any wireless AP when I left click on the icon. It doesn't even have an X mark on the bottom left of the icon when no network is detected

I created a menu entry to run MATLAB using
Code:
gnome-terminal -x /usr/local/bin/matlab After using MATLAB a few times, I realized that my gnome-terminal icon has actually been replaced with the MATLAB icon, even when I'm running the terminal by itself. Meaning that it shows the MATLAB icon in the taskbar and the Run Applications dialog when I type in gnome-terminal.

Is there a way to arrange icons from terminal? Was thinking to make a bash scripts as sometimes(quite seldom) my icons just rearrange on their own and it's damn annoying having to drag them to the place they were.

I have an icon theme going, and when using 'gnome-terminal', the window of the terminal uses the icon from the theme. When using 'xfce4-terminal' however (which I prefer, given how I now run xfce), the window uses its own icon (that draws a large dollar sign in the middle of a black monitor) and simply ignores the terminal icon from the theme.
I would like to rectify this disturbing matter

I was wondering if there was a way to show all current actions I am doing in a terminal window? For example if I left a terminal window open on one of my desktops, could I make it display everything I am doing so that when I receive some general error in a program, I could jump over and get some more details. I could also use it to see what commands are actually run when I do certain things.

I mean, obviously I can just type them out and italicize them or something equally boring, but what I'd like to do is make the code look like it does on these forums.Code:sudo apt-get install html-knowledgeI've been Googling like a mad man (not a euphemism) for the better part of an hour and can't turn up any pertinent results. I thought maybe somebody here could point me in the right direction. I'm tired of my blog posts looking ugly and disorganized when I start typing commands.

I had automated some tedious commands in the terminal by writing them in a text file and placing an icon on the panel. By clicking the icon the commands ran in the terminal automatically. I cant for the life of me remember the icon command I used to get this to work.

I have my xbox 360 connected to my laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 using the Ushare program. In order to reset Ushare and have it send any new files I have to the 360, I have to go into the terminal and enter
sudo /etc/init.d/ushare stop
sudo /etc/init.d/ushare start
sudo /etc/init.d/ushare start
Is there a way I can have an icon in my panel/toolbar thing at the top of the screen that will run this command string automatically? I'm getting tired of having to enter the whole thing by hand every time.

I have two wifi routers. If I stand next to the main one with my laptop I can connect and access the internet no problem. The other router is in my office, and the bridging is messed up, so while I see the essid and bssid using 'iwlist scanning' and nm-tool, I can't connect to it.
Now, my main router's signal still reaches to my office, just not as strong as the borked router in my office. I need to be able to choose which wifi network to connect to without wasting time walking between rooms. I added entries for both in network-manager, but it doesn't show them in the list when I left click the tray icon! How the do I connect to the network I want?

I have a desktop computer and a NAS, running Kubuntu & Ubuntu. I use WOL to wake the NAS and then mount the drives (NFS) on my desktop.
I've placed an icon on my KDE desktop which wakes the NAS and mounts the drives, this works great, but I've set it to run in terminal so I can enter the password for mounting the drives. This leaves me with an open window which I don't want to close because the NAS is set to shutdown 15 minutes after ssh logout.
My question is how can I minimize the open terminal window to an icon on my taskbar?
