Should the first bootable partition start from sector 1 on a hard disk? or Can it be created anywhere on the disk? I am using fdisk to create the bootable partition.

I've tried other installations, but I always get errors like this. /dev/sda 5, 7 and 8 are occupied by PCLinuxOs. /dev/sda 9, 10, 11 and 12 by Fedora. I made room for Linux installations by GParted (last version). Really, I made no errors. The installer of PCLOS is a bit strange: it changed the NTFS partition sda5 in sda 6! In a previous installation with Fedora and Kubuntu only the extend partition sda 4 complained about not starting on physical sector boundary. The hard disk is Western Digital with Advanced Format. Probably this is the cause of the problem. The systems are snappy and responsive. I do not encounter any problem. What to do? Ignoring the problem or reinstalling? May be it would be better to get rid of PCLOS and to dual boot Windows with Fedora?

View 1 Replies View Relatedmy old pc died not long ago so I retrieved its hard disk and bought a USB enclosure. that HD had a ubuntu 9.04 partition and an XP one. Something must have gone wrong somewhere as, although i could still boot from jaunty, I was not allowed to upgrade.
It therefore seemed to me natural perform a clean install, so here's what I did:
- on a win7 computer, I inserted a 9.10 bootable disk
- with usb-disk creator, I wanted to install via a spare image so re-formatted the HD
- I couldn't install a mythbuntu 9.10 after that as I giot an error message ("can't mount the drive" or something similar). yet, in win7 the HD is recognised.
So, what am I doing wrong? Are USB HDs not included as USB devices that you can make bootable? Or should I be installing a !straight" ubuntu version, then install MythTV?
I have installed 1tb hard drive and would like to partition as follows:
1) / - 20g
2) /swap - 6G
3) /photos /150g
4) /videos /500g
5) /audio /300g
After 2-3 partition an extended partition automatically created in which I am not able to create specified capacity i.e., say I want 150g of /photos partition, the /videos partition is automatically reduced and a free space at the end appears. Some free space is always there which i am not able to understand. Nevertheless i clicked to create, but I get an error viz. 'device not created'.
I want to install Cent OS5 on my machine. The Hard Disk is SATA. I want to discuss about how to custom partition the hard disk. I have a broken DVD drive and no others available right now to burn a DVD iso to so I'd like to use a empty hard disk instead.
I've tried Unetbootin but that only copies a few megabytes of files - the rest of the image data in the ISO is ignored.
I have verified the ISO is valid and working with VirtualBox. It's MD5 hash is also as expected. But I need to boot at the real bios not an emulated one.
I've also tried things like:
sudo cat /disk/image.iso > /dev/sdb1
and that got "Permission denied" -
A part of my hd is ntfs (where I keep my windows and windows files). I edited it to be flagged as "bootable" in the disk tools that comes with ubuntu 10.10, and now it wont list as a file system in ubuntu (in other words I cant access it).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed meego on an asus eee pc, neat l ittle os. i had originally had grub set up booting into ubuntu netbook remix. win xp and the system restore partition. when i installed meego i was allowed to select what i wanted as far as boot options in the new boot loader (extlinux). windows and meego boot just fine but when i try to get into my already configured and homey install of ubuntu nbr it gives an error of
"boot sector signature not found (unbootable disk/partition)"
I have two internal harddisk. Harddisk 1 has ubuntu, fedora installed and harddisk 2 has ubuntu installed. I normally connect either one, and use it. How can i always keep connect both harddisks, and at the start, select from which harddisk to boot? Or it's not possible?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to resize a partition on an IDE hard disk to use the entire disk but can not get more than a 309GB partition. I can get 295, 300, 301, 302GB, etc... fine but start getting problems with anything over 309GB. I get the following error with 310GB or more:

I have been having problems hibernating my windows 7 partition recently. It happened approximately right after I set up the dual boot.
I have found other topics where it says to make sure that the windows 7 partition is marked as the active partition. I have since done so and it has not changed anything. I did it with Partition Magic on Windows. I did find it suspicious though that my Dell Recovery partition is labeled as boot while the Windows one is marked as Active and System.
However when I looked at it using disk utility in Ubuntu the windows 7 partition is marked as Bootable while the recovery partition is not.
Hibernation works on Ubuntu with a couple error messages while shutting down and some weird screen issues while booting up. But it ends up working decently.
Under Disk Utility the Ubuntu Partition is not marked as Bootable. Should it be?
i had installed fedora 14 into my new hardisk(1500gb) as new server the problem is how can i use the fdisk to partition the hardisk into two partition.

I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)
I Installed Ubuntu 9.04 with XP theme. Then I installed Picasa and I have pictures on a 2nd hard disk. When I restart the PC Picasa doesn't see the 2nd drive. The 2nd HDD is mounted under /media/disk and clicking on the "My computer" icon (this is XP theme), I see the 2nd hdd. Now, I have to add this disk to Picasa again for it to scan the pictures. I don't want to do this on a regular basis.

I didn't think I would need more than 10 for /.The other night, Debian informed me that I had 0 bytes remaining on /. On my embedded linux box, running on Linux Kernel 2.6.9 embedded with BusyBox utilities.
An Objective are follow:
1/ To figure out how many partitions are on the hard disk
2/ Create a extra partition about 10GB size on the hard disk
3/ Format the partition and mount var on that partition
Only utility to perform above operations I have "sfdisk" utility from BusyBox collection. Which get installed at the time of image flash in to ROM (8mb ROM size). The following is the root directory structure where hdd as a directory mounted /mnt/hdd1

After I have installed all my programs, I need to install windows and I need visual studio. So I was thinking of taking 20 GB from the /home directory and using that for windows. I can use gparted. However, many posters on here think it is best to use gparted by booting from the disk. However, I cannot do this, as I don't have any DVD drivers. And I can't really afford to buy one just for this reason. What is the best way to do this?
