Ubuntu :: Auto Detect Hard Drive Errors?

Jan 22, 2010

Someone explain this to me. I often thought in the back of my head, how do I check if my drive is bad in Linux? I always excused it thinking well I guess besides gaming that's another reason to keep a windows partition around. I boot up yesterday and Gnome was acting weird. Then, it happened. "We have detected bad sectors in your hard drive." I thought, no, you're stupid, this hard drive is less than a year old (however it was a replacement for another one that died). So I reboot.

Boot back up - Different error message. But instead of getting it a few minutes after log in, I got it right away. "We have detected potential hard drive failure." Okay, Linux. Want to play this game? Booted to Vista, downloaded Seatools to test my Seagate drive. It failed... Swapped SATA cables... it failed... So I ask - how does Linux have this auto detect capability like that? As much as I love Ubuntu, I was like there's no way it could just magically tell like that without running the Seagate program. But alas, Ubuntu was dead on target.

General :: Okular Keeps On Producing Errors On Boot

Feb 3, 2010

I get heaps of errors from Okular saying that /tmp/kde-luke/* cannot be opened. I think it is doing this because I downloaded files from Firefox and opened them then closed firefox before closing the pdf files. I have tried uninstalling a purging Okular deleting the applications stuff in my home directory but it is still obsessed with these files. The only way I have been able to stop these annoying pop ups is by having the application uninstalled or running a starup script that will create these files on boot.

Hardware :: Errors, Can't Boot Either OS Of Dual Boot

Jan 8, 2011

I have a 10-year-old desktop computer with Windows XP on one drive and Ubuntu 10.4 on the second drive. The first is an old IDE disk, the second a more modern SATA drive. Tried to boot Ubuntu, and got a lot of arcane i/o errors that I am sorry I can't repeat verbatim but there was something about unable to read sector this or sector that, among other things. I thought maybe the drive was hosed. Tried booting into recovery mode to see if I could figure anything out but it was too geeky for me. Then I tried rebooting Ubuntu to see if I could look at the errors again but now the system insists on going into recovery mode.

Then I tried booting windows, which as I mentioned is on a different physical drive. The MS logo comes up and then it reboots spontaneously and we're back where we started. Any ideas? Should I suspect the second drive is seriously damaged, or could there be some problem with the motherboard?

Debian Multimedia :: XOrg Auto-detect Failing To Detect Max Screen Resolution

May 29, 2011

I've installed Squeeze 2.6.32-5-amd64 on my laptop (Alienware M17X R3, Intel i7 Sandybridge, ATI Technologies Inc Broadway [ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6800 Series])The screen is 17", with maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. After a default install of the operating system, the maximum resolution I can select is 1280 x 1024.My research so far has suggested that I need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and provide xorg with the necessary resolution.

Again, by default, the xorg.conf file is not created. This leads me to believe that xorg is scanning my hardware at startup and providing me with whatever it thinks is appropriate. I tried following these instructions to generate an xorg.conf file. This process created an xorg.conf file under /root/.

When I copy this xorg.conf file to /etc/X11, I get a blank (i.e. black) screen. Deleting this file restores the default resolution 1280 x 1024.This system is dual booting with Windows 7. Under windows I am able to get a 1920 x 1080 resolution, so I know my hardware is up to it.At this stage I have yet to install the drivers for the Radeon graphics card.What are my options regarding configuring xorg to give me a higher screen resolution?

Fedora Installation :: Editing Boot INI File To Detect F12?

Jan 6, 2010

Problem is to boot fedora. On my system I have 3 HDD
on 1st - 2 partition (1)XP (2) free space for data NTFS
on 2d - 1 partition (1) Win Serv 2003
on 3d - 3 partitions (1) free space for data NTFS (2) /boot (3) Fedora 12

After installation boot manager doesn't see fedora! Only give me option to run XP or 2003. Another problem Fedora 12 Live CD doesn't work for my graphic. I see some quick text after lanch and then black screen but still understand that there going some processes under that black screen, than it looks like stop and w8 for my decision which I cant make cause don't see what is there going on. So there no chance to get under linux after instalation and no chance using live CD to install GRUB and I need some how edit boot.ini in windows to make it appear fedora in boot menu.

My current boot.ini looks like that:
Code:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition" /noexecute=optout /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
how should looks 3d line?
Code:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(3)Linux="Fedora 12" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Ubuntu Installation :: Pxe Boot Doesnt Detect Hard Disks?

Feb 26, 2011

I have a fully operational PXE boot server, the client boots up and begins the setup process however, fails to detect the hard disk, I have tried with ubuntu 8.10, 9.10 and 10.10 and none of them will see my hard disk, I boot to the cd and it sees the hard disks with no problem, so apparently the pxe boot server isnt serving up the neccesary drivers or something to detect my hard disks properly. They are just IDE drives and like I said, regular cd install detects my drives just fine.So if anyone here has any information that may help shed some light on this issue I would be so grateful

CentOS 5 :: Errors / Warnings At Boot?

Sep 14, 2010

I've made a CentOS 5 x86_64 setup last year, around november/december.This system is supposed to operate as a home router/gateway, firewall, nas, small intranet/extranet server and media center.I've previously built a system using older parts (Pentium III 866MHz), and had on it CentOS 5 x86.It successfully served the same purpose (except nas and media center) for quite some time, about 1-2years, until i felt i needed better hardware (more memory, speed and disk space mainly) and 64-bit support.

Part of this intended setup isn't finished (router/gateway, firewall, media center), partially because i'm still lacking a good 1000mbps switch and a supported wireless n 3-antenna card in AP/server mode.In the previous setup, i had router/gateway, firewall and small intranet/extranet server working, with a crappy 100mbps switch (the switch is broken now).the new setup has run pretty well, it had been upgraded 2 times, etc...But since it has been installed, even before any updates, upgrades or repo additions, there has been always warnings/errors during kernel boot.I'm listing my specs, configs, versions and logs bellow. all the partitions, RAID and LVM were created during CentOS initial setup.

Hardware:
Case:1x Cooler-Master CM-690 II Advanced (RC-692-KKN2)
PSU:1x Corsair VX450W (CMPSU-450VX)

Fedora Installation :: 11 Live CD Won't Detect Keyboard Or Mouse And Speakers During Boot

Sep 12, 2009

I am running Vista on my C: drive and I just got Fedora 11. I planned to dual boot Vista and fedora 11. I Downloaded the Live CD from the site (680 +- MB) and burned the files IN the .iso file to an empty DVD and CD. Shrank my D: drive and now have about 27 GiB wort of unpartitioned space. I booted from the Live CD. everything went OK until i chose Boot from the Boot Menu that came up. First it took me to a screen with the following message:

ACPI: expecting a [reference] package element found type 5. and then in went on to boot normally. Then when it reached the user login screen, I found that my mouse and keyboard were'nt responding and that there was no lights on any of the keys. I checked the USB cables and did a hard shutdown and booted from the Live CD again, but the problem persists.

Programming :: After USB Boot - Detect Which Device The Ramfs Was Loaded From - Bash Or Python

Sep 22, 2010

How one could determine (for use in a Bash or Python script) which device (eg /dev/sda1, /dev/hda1... etc) a ramfs was loaded from when booting from a USB drive.

I have a RIPLinux/Tinycore live USB disk that automatically needs to run a script that is stored on the same USB drive but not part of the RIPLinux/Tinycore image. (Please note that I do not want to put this script into the RIPLinux image.) I therefore would like to remix the RIPLinux/Tinycore ISO to automatically run this script once it has started up. After RIP linux has booted I would like to automatically mount the USB drive that RIPLinux/Tinycore was booted from. I need help detecting which device this is.

Ubuntu :: NFS Mounts Failing At Boot With DNS Errors

Jul 14, 2010

I have several NFS entries in my /etc/fstab file. Each entry generates an error during boot (from /var/log/boot.log):mount.nfs: DNS resolution failed for macpro.dpc: Name or service not known mountall: mount /mnt/BaseLines [656] terminated with status 32

This occurs even if I specify an IP address in fstab rather than a host name. I was really surprised by that. The odd thing is that by the time the system is up, not only is DNS working as expected, but the NFS shares are mounted as expected. I'd just ignore it for now, accept that it prevents Apache from starting since some of the server's files live on the NFS shares (this is a development system). It appears that the DNS resolver isn't running when the mounts are attempted and that they are attempted again later, after the resolver is running.

I did an
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade....

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Errors / Resolve This?

Aug 21, 2011

I've had a lot of success over the past year with Ubuntu 10.4; however, recently I've been experiencing nothing but problems. It all started with an upgrade a month ago that caused me to experience a boot error. Now every time I re-install the system, I will have a random boot error. I have been trying to install the system on a friend's computer and getting the same thing. I've tried a different download and burned different discs, but I am still experiencing problems with the system having a boot error. Sometimes it is immediate after installation and other times it might boot fine for a day or two and then suddenly it will no longer boot. Is there some kind of bug with 10.4 now? I never, never had this hard of a time with Ubuntu. I've installed it on several computers for myself and other people.
