I have partitioned my HDD to three parts and installed Windows 7 and then Ubuntu 11.04. After a while I installed Hackinosh Snow Leopard grub was not there and whenever I tried to boot to ubuntu from Chameleon bootloader it showed an error and told to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart! I have already tried to restore grub from a Live CD but nothing!

View 3 Replies View RelatedSimilar problems to mine have popped up elsewhere, but none of the fixes seem to work (or I'm just too stupid). I tried to see what the people at Canonical and elsewhere came up with for Ubuntu 10.4 and, after the live USB checked out fine, I rather foolishly installed the OS on my Acer Aspire One D250 (1GB RAM), to run alongside Windows XP.
It booted up once, I think, and then no more. I believe the problem MIGHT be the Broadcom WiFi stuff, but I'm not sure. Anyway, booting Ubuntu leads to a blank screen with a blinking cursor... which doesn't appear to go away. Recovery mode worked once or twice (had to use ACPI=OFF at least once), then no more. It leads to the same thing: that perpetually blinking cursor.
What I would like is either a fix to get Ubuntu 10.4 launched, or some way to remove the OS and restore my netbook back to what it was. Unfortunately, the MBR fixes that are posted all over cyberspace are useless, as my hidden partition doesn't contain the rtmbr.bin file it needs to work (don't ask me why--I've already posted that question at the AAO user forum). So it seems a fix to launch Ubuntu is the only solution, so that I can at least set grub to launch Windows XP rather than Ubuntu.
i just upgraded to the latest nvidia 8 series driver, i downloaded from the nvidia site. After i installed the driver, i reboot and it booted into the console login screen with no GUI. how do i get back into the GUI.

I upgraded from 13.0 to 13.1 and now I have strange behaviors with the printer. It is an Epson Stylus Photo RX640. It was working well with the vanilla Gutenprint 5.2.2 that came in Slack 13.0. The printer is shared and used from other slackware boxes and a mac. Upgrade to 13.1 (gutenprint gets to be 5.2.4) ...
Now when I print from the machine that has the printer attached I get full black pages, and cups shows errors. The Mac is still able to print well (probably because it is using its own PPD and passing through directly to the printer). I then removed gutenprint, and then removed the 5.2.2 PPDs (that were still in the system). Reinstalled gutenprint from the Slackware 13.1 distro. And the problem persists.

Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. I'm running an up-to-date Lucid Lynx but now getting irritated by a bug or problem (I'm not sure whether it's a bug) in Gnome-panels. The problem is whenever I add a new panel in Gnome Desktop, the new panel doesn't appears on screen and needs to be re-logon to appear. It seems a known issue when I checked for the same at Launchpad, but it existed in betas.
I found this trouble since I have made a clean install of Lucid but thought it'll be fixed in any of the updates, but it didn't solved even after the most recent update I made this morning. I wanted to report this bug but didn't knew how to file bug for gnome-panels as there's no option like 'Report a problem' for gnome panels.
I just installed Ubuntu on my windows pc with no problems....except for wireless that is. I have a USB Linksys WUSB54G adapter to access my 2WIRE, WEP network. The thing is, it shows up in the top right hand corner. It even gives me the signal strength. But when it comes to using Mozilla, it is never able to access a page. If I try to Ping something, it's unable to. So I thought maybe I need to use ndiswrapper with my .inf and .sys files from the driver for my windows. I installed it, and added the driver to it...everything went O.K. I check it and it says it's installed and working. Again, I can see the wireless networks, and "connect" but when I try to use the connection there is nothing. I have also tried my neighbours non-WEP connection, but it still doesn't work. So I'm sort of at a loss with what I should do now. I see the networks, can "connect" but can't browse. I installed the drivers from my windows, and it still doesn't work. I used a LIVE CD of Knoppix and I can connect to the Network within 30 seconds and start browsing the net.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l

Not sure what any of this means, but I sure hope someone else does. I would say forget XP, but it's hard to let go of some of the games and software I use. I appreciate any responses, thank you.

Alright so I'm currently in the process of trying to transfer a wubi install of ubuntu to an actual partition using LVPM. I need to use unetbootin with parted magic mounted (not sure if that's the right term) to my hard disk rather than a bootable flash drive. So I set everything up, downloaded parted magic ISO, ran unetbootin and selected the file everything installed smoothly. I then restart my computer and unetbootin is indeed in the boot list but when I select it, it remains at a black screen. I left it at the black screen for about ten minutes and nothing happened. I've tried a few times and nothing.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have very strange problems with all the good audio mp3 players in Ubuntu. Not the bad programs only the good (whcich have good skins and library and so on). Amarok for some reason skips all the music files but only mp3 if I put m3u online radio it works. It doesn't show errors at all just skips the songs. I've never had issues with mp3 files before. The movie player works liek a charm but is too cheap (no library to browse files). Banshee was great and suddenly it stopped working just like the good old Rhythmbox... They appear to be starting in background but don't show nowhere. I cannot install XMMS players too it isn't found on the apt-get server. Also my packages are fully updated.
Reinstalling the programs don't help at all! It must be some major issue with the programs not launching. It's not a single program Banshee, Rhythmbox and I think some other but don't remember the names. Movie player plays all but is too simple. I want something like Winamp with nice library please help. No need for movies just mp3. Exaile works not fine with mp3 but I preffer how Rhytmhbox shows the music library with all the songs not like in seperate folders. I could try song shuffle. But why the other programs don't start what command can show what's happening?
I've been trying to figure out how to run/install openSUSE from a usb stick for several days. I downloaded the 11.4 .iso from distrowatch & used the following command in Linux Mint to put it on the usb stick.

It gets to the loading screen and get stuck. It has a small bar going across, that never finishes. I've hit escape to try and get some info, but don't know what I'm looking for and it's too much to write down. I did notice there were several I/O errors. I did check the usb for defects and it returned ok, and the md5sum was correct.
I've also tried safe settings which takes me to a blueish/black screen and stays there. No ACPI starts to load and then drops to a shell.
how to get this accomplished? I've installed many Linux OS's and I've never had this much trouble.
ps. I"ve read the "please read" pre installation page on here, and things just don't make a whole lot of sense to me.
with slackware 13.0 for one user xfce4 hangs and doesn't start..xsession.errors claim it can't open display. It works fine for other users. Also if I access the machine in question as the same user but remotely using remote X (X-terminal on my LAN) it works fine.Sometimes if I wait and count to 30 it comes up but a lot of the features don't work.During the last week have posted this question on the compuserve linux forum and also in the xfce site forum with no solutions.seems there must be something in that user's directory which is hanging it up. I keep the same /home/users directory on a separate partition so when I upgrade for new versions of slackware the /home/users remain the same - I symlink home to that partition so upgrades are somewhat seemless.

I just updated to the new drivers. In my Xorg.0.log file, it doesn't show any errors. It just stop at a black screen. This might be a new bug with the binary drivers.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a 10-year-old desktop computer with Windows XP on one drive and Ubuntu 10.4 on the second drive. The first is an old IDE disk, the second a more modern SATA drive. Tried to boot Ubuntu, and got a lot of arcane i/o errors that I am sorry I can't repeat verbatim but there was something about unable to read sector this or sector that, among other things. I thought maybe the drive was hosed. Tried booting into recovery mode to see if I could figure anything out but it was too geeky for me. Then I tried rebooting Ubuntu to see if I could look at the errors again but now the system insists on going into recovery mode.
Then I tried booting windows, which as I mentioned is on a different physical drive. The MS logo comes up and then it reboots spontaneously and we're back where we started. Any ideas? Should I suspect the second drive is seriously damaged, or could there be some problem with the motherboard?
I was playing with my netbook and trying to hackintosh it only to realise mic, webcam and network don't work. So I restored the entire disk ubuntu 9.10 from a Ghost image I had made prior. But it doesn't boot, it only shows the word GRUB on top left corner.
View 4 Replies View RelatedEverything looks fine until when the login screen should show up but doesn't. The cursor is there and can move. I can switch to terminal by ctl-alt-F*, and login. After gdm stop and startx, gnome is back but only in fail safe mode, with non-movable non-resizable window, only one workspace, and cursor is a black cross.
I ever met a similar case before, which comes to the login screen but it keeps reloading after entering password. Finally got solved by run sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop in terminal. This time it doesn't work anymore.
At the GNU GRUB boot menu, I am seeing Window's 7 listed, but am unable to boot it. I've viewed its boot setting which appears correct (/dev/sda1/ hd 0,1). I tried using the Ubuntu 10.4 LTR install disk to correct grub, but got stuck at the point where it asks for doing the manual partition.

i wiped my entire hard drive that had xp as its only OS. I freshly installed a Windows 7 ultimate and everything went perfectly. I then decided to install 10.4. I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?

Hence, I wanted to delete all these computer links and only add my home computer and office computer afresh. I am able to access the Ubuntu One account and registered my office computer. But in my home computer I am unable to access Ubuntu One. I tried un-installing and then re-installing the Ubuntu One, but still does not work, and stubbornly displays only one entry as "LOCAL MACHINE" and I cannot figure out anyway how to add my home computer to Ubuntu One and access the same Is there some way to completely uninstall Ubuntu One (along with all settings) and then re-install?
In ubuntu 10.04 my X-fi Fatal1ty Titanium sound card worked for my speakers but I had to use onboard sound for the mic. When I installed 10.10 the sound card no longer works at all so I have to run the speakers through the onboard sound.
The second problem I have is that Skype will not pick up my microphone all other programs seem to be able to record from the microphone just fine but skype does not. Ive tried selecting all the different input device options from the skype settings but none of them seem to work.
EDIT: Sound doesn't work at all in wine.
EDIT2: The X-fi card no longer shows up in the sound control panel.
I have installed xmms player on ubuntu 8.04 it works fine but it doesn't shows menu on right click on player, menu list displays but will blank.
