Debian :: Errors Listed Upon Boot?

Sep 30, 2015

Since installing debian 8.2 I have had a list of errors appear during the boot, I get the usual Loading, please wait message then a series of random errors.I think I am stuck in initramfs, then typing exit resumes boot. Should I be concerned and can I jump straight into the login screen without typing exit each time?

Debian :: In Which Files Boot Errors Are Stored?

Jan 12, 2016

Debian 8 faild to boot normally, thowing several screens of error messages. Then it suggested to enter root pw and do some maintenance, and upon accepting my root pw it booted me into command line.I guess, those screens of errors are saved to some log files - if this is the case, in which files shall find it?I tried:

/var/log/syslog - an endless file, yet the records end at 28/12/2015
/var/log/dmesg - same
/var/log/boot.log - not there

Ubuntu :: Windows 7 Not Listed In Boot Menu?

I've triple booted Windows 7, Windows XP, and Linux Mint 9. I can boot to Windows XP, and Mint with no problems, but there's no Windows 7 option in the boot menu. How can I get Windows 7 to show up so that I could boot to it?

I tried sudo update-grub, but Windows 7 didn't show up.

Debian Installation :: Errors On Boot: "fsck.ext2: No Such File"?

Jan 19, 2011

I've installed Debian Lenny from USB with the small 8MB netboot image. I only chose "Standard system" in Tasksel during install, to get a clean, minimal install. I also chose for LVM and a separate partition for /home. I have one 1.5TB SATA drive in this machine.

Now everything seems to install just fine, but when I reboot I get the following error:

fsck.ext2: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sdb1

I get offered to enter a maintenance shell, or press CTRL-D to resume booting. When I do, the system boots fine and nothing seems wrong. But it is inconvenient, because I can't reboot the machine without physically going to it to press CTRL-D on the keyboard

I have googled for this error and it is mentioned on several forums, but they were all related to other things specific to their installs/machines.

(ps. the only slightly strange thing during install is that the Debian installer included my 1GB USB thumbdrive when it shows all the drives and the partitions before formatting. I removed the USB thumbdrive directly after install, but if I plug it in, I still get the error)

These are the errors during boot:
code....

I've only installed Debian on my laptops, which never had any problems.

Ubuntu :: Automatically Skipping Fstab-listed Usb-hdd During Boot When Absent?

May 18, 2010

I have a usb-hdd at one location that I use for backup purposes. It is listed (by its specific label, not uuid because I don't want to go through the hassle of changing this when changing backup drives or adding one at a different location. Now, since upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04, I get the following message during boot when the usb-hdd is not present and thus not attached:The disk drive for "/media/backup" is not ready yet or not presentI need to press S to skip mounting manually, whereas 9.10 just ignored that fstab entry and continued booting. How can I get the old behavior back? Is there an option I can give in fstab that mounts the drive at bootup when present and ignores it when not?

Perhaps an even better solution would be to let the drive be mounted according to the fstab entry whenever it is attached (be it at bootup or at any other moment): is this possible?elated to that: are drives unmounted/mounted in a suspend/resume cycle?

Debian Hardware :: Wired Ethernet Interface Not Listed On Toshiba Laptop

Jun 18, 2014

I need to share internet connection through wired-ethernet with another computer which does not have a wifi card.

However, no eth* interface shows up on ifconfig. Even more surprinsingly, neither lshw nor lspci shows anything related to wired ethernet controller/adapter:

Code: Select alllshw -C network
  *-network
       description: Wireless interface
       product: WiFi Link 5100
       vendor: Intel Corporation
       physical id: 0
       bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0
       logical name: wlan2

[Code[ ....

Why isn't my laptop's wired ethernet not showing? I have a Toshiba Satellite PSAG8U-04001W.

The installation of Debian wasn't originally on this system: it was on an older laptop whose motherboard fried, so I rescued the hard drive as well as the Debian installation. However, I doubt this should have anything to do with lspci not even detecting the wired eth controller.

Debian Multimedia :: MPlayer No Longer Listed In Apps Menu After System Update

Aug 3, 2010

MPlayer was working just fine last night, but today I'm having problems which may be due to me performing a system update. I noticed that MPlayer was no longer listed in my Applications menu and I no longer had the option of opening videos with it. However, I now had Gnome MPlayer which must have been installed with the update because I never installed it. Whilst going through Synaptic, I found that the MPlayer GUI had been removed, so I re-installed it. However nothing happened when I attempted to open videos with it.

When I tried to use it through the terminal I got the error message:
mplayer: relocation error: mplayer: symbol codec_wav_tags, version LIBAVFORMAT_52 not defined in file libavformat.so.52 with link time reference

I found a bug report on this very problem here [URL]. The conclusion was that the person filing the bug report was using a version of ffmpeg not found in Debian and that he'd need a version of MPlayer built with his version of ffmpeg libs. I'm assuming that this is also the case with me, however I'm not sure how to go about finding a build or simply building a version of MPlayer with whatever version of ffmpeg that I'm using. For reference, I'm using Squeeze.

Hardware :: Errors, Can't Boot Either OS Of Dual Boot

Jan 8, 2011

I have a 10-year-old desktop computer with Windows XP on one drive and Ubuntu 10.4 on the second drive. The first is an old IDE disk, the second a more modern SATA drive. Tried to boot Ubuntu, and got a lot of arcane i/o errors that I am sorry I can't repeat verbatim but there was something about unable to read sector this or sector that, among other things. I thought maybe the drive was hosed. Tried booting into recovery mode to see if I could figure anything out but it was too geeky for me. Then I tried rebooting Ubuntu to see if I could look at the errors again but now the system insists on going into recovery mode.

Then I tried booting windows, which as I mentioned is on a different physical drive. The MS logo comes up and then it reboots spontaneously and we're back where we started. Any ideas? Should I suspect the second drive is seriously damaged, or could there be some problem with the motherboard?

Debian Hardware :: Webcam "defective" In 64 Bit If Its Actually Listed As /dev/video0?

Aug 23, 2010

Last week my uncle gave me a Logitech webcam (According to lsusb: Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Ultra Vision). It works fine in my 32 bit Debian install but in my 64 bit install, nothing works with it. Heres the issues I get:

Skype: Simply will not use it but can detect it
Cheese: Segmentation faults immediately
eViacam: Can't detect it
VLC: Detects it and can use it but almost everything is completely gray
v4lucp: Gets several errors relating to things like color, brightness, contrast, etc

I have just about everything related to v4l and v4l2 installed, including 32 bit libraries. Why is this webcam so "defective" in 64 bit if its actually listed as /dev/video0?

CentOS 5 :: Errors / Warnings At Boot?

Sep 14, 2010

I've made a CentOS 5 x86_64 setup last year, around november/december.This system is supposed to operate as a home router/gateway, firewall, nas, small intranet/extranet server and media center.I've previously built a system using older parts (Pentium III 866MHz), and had on it CentOS 5 x86.It successfully served the same purpose (except nas and media center) for quite some time, about 1-2years, until i felt i needed better hardware (more memory, speed and disk space mainly) and 64-bit support.

Part of this intended setup isn't finished (router/gateway, firewall, media center), partially because i'm still lacking a good 1000mbps switch and a supported wireless n 3-antenna card in AP/server mode.In the previous setup, i had router/gateway, firewall and small intranet/extranet server working, with a crappy 100mbps switch (the switch is broken now).the new setup has run pretty well, it had been upgraded 2 times, etc...But since it has been installed, even before any updates, upgrades or repo additions, there has been always warnings/errors during kernel boot.I'm listing my specs, configs, versions and logs bellow. all the partitions, RAID and LVM were created during CentOS initial setup.

Hardware:
Case:1x Cooler-Master CM-690 II Advanced (RC-692-KKN2)
PSU:1x Corsair VX450W (CMPSU-450VX)

Ubuntu :: NFS Mounts Failing At Boot With DNS Errors

Jul 14, 2010

I have several NFS entries in my /etc/fstab file. Each entry generates an error during boot (from /var/log/boot.log):mount.nfs: DNS resolution failed for macpro.dpc: Name or service not known mountall: mount /mnt/BaseLines [656] terminated with status 32

This occurs even if I specify an IP address in fstab rather than a host name. I was really surprised by that. The odd thing is that by the time the system is up, not only is DNS working as expected, but the NFS shares are mounted as expected. I'd just ignore it for now, accept that it prevents Apache from starting since some of the server's files live on the NFS shares (this is a development system). It appears that the DNS resolver isn't running when the mounts are attempted and that they are attempted again later, after the resolver is running.

I did an
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade....

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Errors / Resolve This?

Aug 21, 2011

I've had a lot of success over the past year with Ubuntu 10.4; however, recently I've been experiencing nothing but problems. It all started with an upgrade a month ago that caused me to experience a boot error. Now every time I re-install the system, I will have a random boot error. I have been trying to install the system on a friend's computer and getting the same thing. I've tried a different download and burned different discs, but I am still experiencing problems with the system having a boot error. Sometimes it is immediate after installation and other times it might boot fine for a day or two and then suddenly it will no longer boot. Is there some kind of bug with 10.4 now? I never, never had this hard of a time with Ubuntu. I've installed it on several computers for myself and other people.
