View 6 RepliesI've just installed Slackware 13.1 in two different laptops for first time. I have some strange internet browsing behaviour in one of the laptops. I've installed 2 internet browsers(firefox, opera) using the directions from Slackbuilds.org and there is also konqueror pre-installed. Moreover I installed Wicd network manager.
I can browse some pages e.g. ..... with firefox very slowly but NEVER facebook. I can browse almost any page, even facebook, with OPERA but very very slowly. The same goes with konqueror... Wicd shows that i am always connected with my WPA wireless network

How can I verify JavaScript on a site (not on the same server) is working from command line access of the URL?
On checking some of what was written in 2005 I find most of it isn't still relevant (if it was then - I noted the w3m-js stuff mentioned in 2005 hadn't been updated since 2003).
Since then a couple of times I've looked into it but didn't make much headway but also didn't spend a lot of time on it. So far as I could tell from other posts I'd seen others hadn't either.
Recently I found out about Mozilla's SpiderMoneky js library and that it could be linked into elinks text browser and did same on my RHEL5 system.
I found Spidermonkey rpms in the EPEL (Fedora sponsored) repository:
js-1.70-8.el5.i386.rpm
js-1.70-8.el5.x86_64.rpm
js-devel-1.70-8.el5.i386.rpm
js-devel-1.70-8.el5.x86_64.rpm
I was able to download and install using rpm then compile elinks from source to include the above. Running elinks version after that shows the ECMAScript support is compiled into the new elinks binary. Also setting various ecmas* flags in the elinks.conf does have effect so clearly it is using them. (As opposed to another system where I use the original RHEL5 provided elinks RPM it complains about the ecmas* stuff being invalid options.)
It appears that by default it has this enabled but just for good measure I added:
set ecmascript.enable = 1.
Despite that when I pull up the page I see:
This product requires use of a browser that supports JavaScript
As a test I set the above to 0 on the off chance it was backwards and saw the same thing.
I then set the following:
set ecmascript.error_reporting = 1
On pulling up the page I now see a popup box:
Quote:
JavaScript Error:
A script embedded in the current document raised the
following exception:
TypeError: Window.Focus is not a function
OK
That seems to suggest that despite the earlier message about needing a browser that supports JavaScript that it is in fact executing at least one JS but that it is getting an error. Can anyone confirm that?
Does anyone have any idea what Id need to do to deal with the Window.Focus message?
Essentially the site is a login page and even though I am able to input username and password after opening in browser when I tell it to POST it simply returns to the same login/password page.
And of course it doesn't have to be elinks/spidermonkey. I'd be interested in finding out if anyone knows a way I can verify a site that is running JavaScript is actually responding properly from command line rather than via a browser?
The SpiderMonkey stuff from Mozilla when compiled into elinks is supposed to do that but given my results Im not sure if it is or not.
Most of the documentation I can find on JavaScript stuff appears to be aimed at developers testing their own JS code from command line rather than accessing a web page with JavaScript.
i'm used to input the following command when tracing a port or interface in Solaris 9/10.This a packet sniffer.

Is there a command line alternative to clicking on "Safely Remove Drive" in nautilus?
When I click on "Safely Remove Drive" in nautilus, the USB HDD attached (WD Elements) vanishes from the nautilus "places" list, the drive spins down, and the light on the drive dims to indicate that it is powered down.
I have tried the "umount" command as well as the "eject" command from the terminal, but they both only seem to unmount the drive, as it is still shown in the nautilus "places" list and the light on the drive stays bright.
After many years using linux, I decided to buy a mac. Now my main problem is: how do I synchronize pictures within my linux machines and the mac?
I have been using digikam in linux, and I like it because I can just browse the pictures directly from my directories (and it is easy for me to keep directories synchronized within mac and linux).
I have been testing iphoto and aperture, which are quite nice but if use them, my understanding is that I have to import all the pictures into these softwares, and this doesn't seem to be the ideal solution for me. I tried picasa, but I don't find it as good as iphoto and aperture. On the other hand it allows me to browse directories, without having two copies of the same pictures.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a big archive with about 10000 documents in a usb stick. What I have noticed is that browsing of that archive with gnome is much slower with ubuntu than winXP ( dual boot , same PC ) where it is almost instant.I have disabled assistive technologies and installed Thunar file browser. It improved things but again the lag is important. Linux is in general much faster than windows, so I wonder why is it happening ?

I have sym link of a folder in /var/www/test (test is the symlinked folder). If I write in the address bar of the browser http://x.x.x.x/album/img_name.jgp I can see the picture, but I want contents not to be available. Is that different from file browsing and how to disable it?

So I have apache running on my local computer. When I open up local development sites in tabs in my browser, apache threads are started. That's as it should be. However, when I close the tabs, close the browsers, and then run system monitor/system task manager, I get a long list of apache threads that are sleeping, waiting around for god knows what. How do I get these apache threads to stop hanging around?
View 1 Replies View RelatedNot sure if this was the right place to post this. Recently installed Ubuntu Netbook remix on my netbook. On Windows I used IIS and pointed my website to a directory full of video files all in .avi containers, enabled directory browsing and could watch files in the browser on my PS3.
I'm wondering how I go about doing this in Apache? Since there isn't any GUI to do it for me like in IIS :P.
Recently I installed a backtrack 4 final on my computer, but I couldn't browse the internet by wifi , when I use the slax networktool to analyze the newwork and see what the problem is, the tools showed as below:

I have installed Wubi (Ubuntu 10.10) recently. It takes more time to boot than Windows. But my main concern is that my browsing speed is much slower compared to that on Windows 7. How can this be resolved?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am tired of watching fsck check my filesystem when my eeepc 901 shuts down abruptly due to a crash. I know that with a journaling filesystem, I won't have to wait for a check. However, I am well aware of the poor I/O performance of the SSD, so I can imagine using a journaling filesystem being even more frustrating, since there will be constant writes to the journal? I will buy a new laptop without such a crummy ssd someday but, is there anything I can do now, on the software side of things?
View 3 Replies View RelatedRecently alt-ctrl-F1-6 to drop into a VT stopped working. I don't use that everyday so cannot really isolate why it may have happened (investigating WM rebuild).
Could something in a kernel rebuild do those? I don't recall seeing such an option.
Anyway, does anyone know of another way to get into a VT from X?
Looking to get some input on finding a distribution to move to from Ubuntu.Overall, there's some changes--mostly unimportant overall, but stick in my craw--on the horizon, and I'm looking for alternatives. I'm a casual user, only one using my machine, don't need anything extra-special...something that isn't extremely utilitarian from the get-go, and doesn't come loaded with a boatload of things I'll never use. I enjoy putzing around in a CLI, and I'm not opposed to having to get used to slightly different commands when using it (though I expect that, on the whole, most things will be the same).I know, a little vague on what I'm looking for...best put, a stable system that doesn't require me to do TOO much, but lets me do what I want even if it means breaking things every once in a while.
View 6 Replies View RelatedGiven the recent dealings between Skype and Microsoft (here), one can guess that Linux support will be dropped. It wasn't amazing, but it ran. Moreover, security of transmitted data, in my own opinion, will be more questionable as of this acquisition.
What are the alternatives? If there are no full solutions - I propose the unification of several partial solutions into a merged FOSS project. I recommend a secure chat/video client with SIP capabilities and native ports for Linux Console, X, and FreeDos.
I like how iftop shows at a glance and in real time where my bandwidth is going. It requires root privileges, however. Is there a similar command or tool that a regular user can use to visualize bandwidth use? Say the kind of user who shouldn't be given the keys to the kingdom?

I don't know if I saw this minimize effect in ubuntu but definitely have seen it on other nix systems. It's basically a little button in the menu bar that when clicked, "minimizes" the window so that only the menubar shows.how to get it working on ubuntu.
