Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Browsing Hangs - But Everything Works - Did Not Happen On 9.10

Aug 10, 2010

Its on an older laptop, a Toshiba Sattelite M50-252. A friend of mine had this laying around, and it wasn't running windows very well. So I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on it and it was performing decently enough for browsing and mailing.

On Ubuntu 9.10 there was a problem sending large images for printing. It would make the printer (A brother HL-4050 CDN, placed on the network) say out-of-memory. Same print job from windows would not make this error. Upgrading the system to Ubuntu 10.04 worked.

Actually, I had before tried 10.04 on the machine but ended up formatting and reinstalling 9.10. This was because browsing on 10.04, no matter what browser, would simply hang randomly. A search on google could be performed, and some pages loaded. But some pages didn't load at all or only a few % of them, and the browser would just claim to be "resolving host".

On 9.10, on all 3 installs i've done on the machine, this problem was NOT to be found.

Here goes the real issue: 4 days ago I installed 10.04 to test again(6 months after its release, lots of updates has been done), and browsing worked great. The laptop has been used a lot since then and now yesterday it started stalling again. The most interesting thing is that APT-GET works fine. New software downloads with a snap. Also WGET with a single file works (although it seems to hang at the resolve once in a while).

Why on earth did it suddenly start to behave like this? Nobody with even the knowledge of using SUDO has been using the machine and it has been used ONLY for browsing. Automatic updates are disabled as well. Even weirder, this happens both using the wireless network card and cable.

I have no idea whats going on. Ubuntu 9.10 works always. 10.04 worked the second time (after a few months of updates) but started stalling after a few days. The system itself runs perfectly well, and there is nothing wrong with apt-get and so on as i said.

Fedora :: How To Setup The Presonus Firebox

Sep 15, 2009

If you want to get your Firebox working with Fedora, this is how I was able to do it. This may also work with other Presonus audio interfaces. First of all you need to install the CCRMA repository for your version of Fedora. Here's a link to the CCRMA Fedora index. Since I'm using FC 11 x86_64 I used this one. This is a well known repository for audio work. If you have jack installed already, then you'll need to uninstall it. Open add/remove software, search for FFADO and install it. Basically, FFADO is Freebob under a different name. One difference is that FFADO uses the new firewire drivers and Freebob uses the old ones. As of this writing, it's still in the experimental stage, but in my case it works. Now, install jack2 (which I will just refer to as jack). You can't just do a search for jack2, it's called the-jack-audio-connection-kit-1.9.x.x. Don't get this confused with jack1, which is the-jack-audio-connection-kit-0.116.1. Be sure to install FFADO before you install jack. I also recommend installing qjackctl because it will make your life a lot easier when configuring jack.

Now, you need a real-time kernel. I could not get any of this to work without one. Do a search for kernel-rt and install the real-time kernel. In my case it was kernel-rt-2.6.29.6-1. I also had to install the kernel-rt-devel because I'm using akmod for my nvidia driver. Now just reboot and you should be able to boot into your real-time kernel. Now, to configure jack. Open qjackctl from applications>sound and video. Click setup and you'll see several options. For driver select "firewire" and under parameters check "realtime". Server path should be "jackd". The rest of the settings should be fine, but I have frames/period set to 128. If you're having trouble, you might want to set this to a higher value. Don't forget to start jack. Now, you should be able to play some tunes! Just make sure that whatever media player you are using outputs to jack. In my case, I'm using the qmmp media player and it works flawlessly. That's it for basic sound. This will probably be enough to get you up and running with Ardor as well. You might also have to configure the patchbay, but that is easy enough.

Fedora :: Using A Presonus Firebox + Soundcard On 11?

Sep 21, 2009

This is how I got my firebox to work in conjunction with my onboard soundcard (in my case, Intel HDA) on Fedora 11 x86_64. This article assumes you have basic knowledge on jack and qjackctl and a jack-compatible program such as ardour.

My smolt: [URL]

Reasons: Personally, I just wanted to be able to do it and to be able to give a good explanation when people ask me why I'm monitoring recordings through headphones - and because it won't work through the PC speakers wasn't going to cut it. You may also need it because while recording "deaf" might be fine, playback needs to go through your state-of-the-art monitors. You may need it because you have a studio all set up and for some odd reason, you just need to add a firebox in. Of course, if you had a studio, you could have just patched the line outs to your main speakers. But that is besides the point.

After searching for almost 3-4 days, I chanced upon rokit's thread and was very disheartened when he seemed to have found no solution. Today, he solved the connection issues but I wanted more. Unlike him, I wasn't using my firebox as a sound card. It would be a sin to waste my onboard audio capabilities. The Juice (some parts paraphrased from rokit's solution)You need to install the PlanetCCRMA repository. Since I'm using Fedora 11 (x86_64), I used this one. This will install the repositories for you so tat yum will be able to locate the needed updates.

Code: [URL]

If you have jack1 (0.x.x) already installed, you MUST uninstall it. jack2 will NOT work with jack1.
Code:

yum remove jack-audio-connection-kit*

The * at the end will also remove the -devel version if you had it installed. Uninstalling jack will remove a lot of existing software that uses jack as a dependancy. Take note of them so you can reinstall them later. Install FFADO. FFADO is the new Freebob from the same developers. It's the driver that will connect jack2 to the firebox. You MUST install this before jack2.

Code:

yum install ffado libffado

Install jack2.

Code:

yum install jack-audio-connection-kit jack-audio-connection-kit-devel

[code]....

Like rokit, I have had much trouble running this without the realtime kernel. I ended up installing Fedora in another partition and this is what I have. As a result, I now have no graphics driver and everything looks weird. I will try to install ATI Catalyst 9,9 and if it works I'll post back. If I don't, assume it doesn't.

Ubuntu Installation :: Mozilla And .mozilla-thunderbird Profiles When Upgrading To 10.04?

May 24, 2010

I have been doing periodic net-based dist upgrade since 7.10. Currently I use 9.10. Now that 10.04 is out, I want to upgrade to the latest LTS version by doing a clean install, instead of using net-based dist-upgrade.

Since I use Firefox, and Thunderbird, I want to keep the passwords/bookmarks I have stored in firefox, and mail/account settings (for multiple email accounts) that are in Thunderbird.

While I know I can copy the hidden profile directories for each, and back them up for recovery after the upgrade by copying them into the new 10.04 after install is complete, I don't know if this is recommended, prudent, or if pitfalls await me. Since I want to do a clean install, and, since 10.04 uses different versions of both Thunderbird and Firefox,

1. Would it be prudent to back up/use the existing profiles I have in 9.10, or should I bite the bullet and just start fresh with new profile setups when I finish installing 10.04? 2. Are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of if I will be restoring a profile of each from 9.10?

3. Or, should I continue to do net-based dist-upgrades to 10.04 so appropriate profile changes can be made by the new versions of Thunderbird/Firefox software?

Fedora :: Plasma Hangs For A Long Time?

Aug 21, 2009

The desktop stops working, the panel stops working.. but compositing, desktop cube etc all work fine.I can still launch a program with Alt-F2.When I try and kill it (to restart) using 'killall plasma' / 'kill -9 <pid> / 'kill -15 pid' from a terminal, nothing happens, the process keeps running. If I leave it for about 30 mins it suddenly dies, allowing me to run 'plasma' from a terminal - then everything is back to normal.

If I log out and try to log back in again, I get a black screen. Only way to fix it is either to kill it and wait for 30 mins or so, or totally reboot the computer.Tail of the xsessions error file:

Fedora Installation :: Hangs On Same Package Each Time?

Dec 7, 2009

I'm trying to install F12 on an iMac G4 (ppc). I partitioned the HD with OS X (10.4.11) on a 50 GB partition, left the remaining 26 GB free, then ran the installer. Everything seems to run very smoothly until it hits this package: sendmail-8.14.3-8.fc12.ppc. Then everything freezes. After this happened twice, I pulled a few applications out, thinking it might be a space issue, but it hung in exactly the same place next time. The install DVD passed the media check at the beginning of the install. Is there a way I could keep this package out of the install and, if it's needed, pull it in from the repositories later?

Slackware :: After Some Idle Time It Hangs /freezes

Jun 6, 2011

After some idle time Slackware hangs up/freezes. When, for an example, i turn on music i can hear it on idle time but after some time music still plays but i'm losing picture (monitor detects no signal), num lock is locked, led on keyboard are turned on but won't turn off while pressing num lock. I've switched off power saving options in Slackware and on bios setup.

My spec is:

X4 620 (without overclocking)
AMD 760G (Radeon HD 3000)
Catalyst 11.5 for Radeon graphic.

BTW - computer works fine with Windows. Also, with Slackware i can work for an hours, many hours and everything is fine but as soon as i leave it for some amount of time = it hangs/freezes. There is something wrong with hibernation. Not always computern is turned off correctly. TV is switched off, slackware logged off but i hear drives working and cooler fans. It should be switched off completly.

Fedora :: Microcode - Boot Process Hangs At Startx Time

Sep 4, 2010

Ever since the kernel update to 2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64, my boot process hangs at about startx time. I boot cleanly at runlevel 3 in either this or the previous 2.6.33.8 kernel. If I execute startx from here (in either kernel), the system hangs at the same place. During the early troubleshooting, I read in another thread (250929) about installing xorg-x11-drv-catalyst, which I did using yum. This led to the failure of the 2.6.33 kernel; yum remove did not fix this. I have carefully followed the instructions in the fglrx HOWTO (updated a week ago by Hlingler) as they relate to a PAE kernel (including reinstalling mesa-libGL), and that fixed earlier difficulties. Hence, I felt I needed a new thread.

dmesg tells me
Code:
microcode: CPU0: patch_level=0x2000032
platform microcode: firmware: requesting amd-ucode/microcode_amd.bin
Linux video capture interface: v2.00
piix4_smbus 0000:00:14.0: SMBus Host Controller at 0xb00, revision 0
microcode: CPU1: patch_level=0x2000032
platform microcode: firmware: requesting amd-ucode/microcode_amd.bin
microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.00 .....

But the program itself reports
Code:
# microcode_ctl -h
This program is for updating the microcode on Intel processors belonging to the IA32 family - PentiumPro upwards (x86-64 included). It depends on the Linux kernel driver. The website urbanmyth.org/microcode (mentioned by yum info microcode_ctl) clearly indicates that Intel has taken over this microcodecode distribution, and suggests that it is no longer valid for AMD processors.

I found a reference to a kernel configuration flag CONFIG_MICROCODE_AMD (as a plausible subsititute for CONFIG_MICROCODE_INTEL) that possibly belongs in a script in /etc/init.d - but the above context leads me to suspect this is not true any more. In any event, those flags are not mentioned anywhere in my init.d scripts - in fact nowhere in the entire /etc tree. My microcode file exists, and is dated March 23. How do I get it installed? Or is this completely unrelated to my hanging boot problem, as suggested by the "platform microcode" line in the dmesg output? If so, where should I be looking?

OpenSUSE :: Kickoff Menu Hangs Long Time While Typing Appname / Fix It?

Once it happens, I try to close it but have to wait about 20 seconds before I can do anything on the computer. Then everything else works fine (after it's closed). But if I go back to kickoff and try again, it does the same thing! I can't seem to find anything in "top" to indicate what's happening.

CentOS 5 :: Udev Hangs On Boot For A Long Time, Suspect Pam_console_apply?

Mar 24, 2010

I'm hoping someone knows about this one... I'm running the latest CentOS 5.4 with kernel 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 (x86_64).When I boot the machine, it gets to the udev starting bit, hangs for like 5 minutes, then prints a message "Failed, will continue in the background." Then it boots OK after that.I tried booting again with the kernel option (from grub) "udevdebug", and what I saw when it tried again was a million messages saying it was waiting for "/sbin/pam_console_apply" to return, but I guess it wasn't returning... ;) Again, after 5 minutes, it gave up and finished booting. Now, this host is an LDAP client.

I figured that may have something to do with it as it is likely that pam_console_apply tries to make an LDAP lookup, which is wrong, because networking hasn't even started yet. If I disable LDAP (by removing ldap lookups in nsswitch.conf), I get no pam_console_apply errors from udev and it boots quickly. But that's a bummer, I need LDAP on this box, and I don't want my boot time to be 7-8 minutes. ;)Presumably before, when LDAP was enabled and it waited 5 minutes and then notified me that it will "continue in the background", that it was eventually successful after networking started. LDAP otherwise works fine on this box, just like all the other servers we have. This is new behavior, I've not seen it with CentOS 5.3 and below. Has anyone seen this? Any hints on what I can do to avoid it? It seems like a pam bug or something, but I don't know for sure.

General :: Browsing Pictures On A Mac?

Oct 12, 2010

After many years using linux, I decided to buy a mac. Now my main problem is: how do I synchronize pictures within my linux machines and the mac?

I have been using digikam in linux, and I like it because I can just browse the pictures directly from my directories (and it is easy for me to keep directories synchronized within mac and linux).

I have been testing iphoto and aperture, which are quite nice but if use them, my understanding is that I have to import all the pictures into these softwares, and this doesn't seem to be the ideal solution for me. I tried picasa, but I don't find it as good as iphoto and aperture. On the other hand it allows me to browse directories, without having two copies of the same pictures.
