Im running a Squid with transparent Dansguardian. It seems i cant shut down Dansguardian or else i will get an error message from firefox telling me it cant establish a connection with the proxy server.
View 4 RepliesI've just installed Slackware 13.1 in two different laptops for first time. I have some strange internet browsing behaviour in one of the laptops. I've installed 2 internet browsers(firefox,opera) using the directions from Slackbuilds.org and there is also konqueror pre-installed. Moreover I installed Wicd network manager.
I can browse some pages e.g. ..... with firefox very slowly but NEVER facebook. I can browse almost any page, even facebook, with OPERA but very very slowly. The same goes with konqueror... Wicd shows that i am always connected with my WPA wireless network

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed squid and dansguardian on my server, I also setup my iptables to forward port 80 communication to port 3128 (squid). I also have remove the comment on /etc/dansguardian/dansguardianf1.conf (line "bannedextensionlist") hoping that my server would block download. But it isn't, it still download file no matter I add in /etc/dansguardian/lists/bannedextensionlist. Oh yeah, I also add this line to my /etc/squid/squid.conf

I want to block yahoo mail chat in dansguardian. I had google few thing I come to know that I need to do this. Locking DNS lookups to webcs.msg.yahoo and httpcs.msg.yahoo by returning 127.0.0.1. I haven't have dns configured. So what I need to do solve this problem. I had tried by making an entry in etc hosts file. but it didn't worked.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have some heavy, long processes running on remote Linux machines. I use my laptop to SSH to these machine and run the processes from my couch.
BUT, when I want to shutdown my laptop, I am in trouble since the remote processes are killed.
I did my research and found out that "screen" is a great solution for me, it is! (As long as I don't SHUTDOWN my laptop). Isn't there a way to "persist" the "screen" sessions so I can shut it down and then re-attach to a session?
I am on an Aspire 5315 and i have Backtrack 5,32bit,Gnome (ubuntu)installed with Vista as a dual boot on hdd.I am currently having problem with my laptop overheating and shutting down. In Vista the software Epower controls the fan but in linux I have to install acer_fancontrol and I have installed it as per instructions. It works fine till i reboot and then i get a frozen screen with the BT5 background and in terminal i get 1gear and goes on till 3rdgear without me being able to use BT5.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Gnome 2.30.2 with Ubuntu 10.4 would like to shut down X Windows properly. Using sudo init 3 from console 1 or a terminal on the Gnome desktop results nothing. There are a bunch of ways of doing accomplishing this that I've seen, but the most recommended methods each cause the same errors. The methods that I've used are sudo service gdm stop, sudo stop gdm && sudo pkill X, and sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop. After these commands are run I receive the following message: gdm stop/waiting.
Then I switch to console 7 & notice that the screen is frozen & has the following information:
There is a blinking cursor below this message & the terminal does not respond to any command including Ctrl z.
These are the same messages that are normally quickly displayed when linux normally boots.
I disabled the battery power option in & removed other unnecessary startup processes from System, Preferences, Startup Applications. I've tried running the gdm stop commands from terminals 1 & 2 as well as consoles in X Windows & it produces the same results. For some reason though, the gdm commands do work when I used the restart option.
When I shut down my computer I want to show some pending tasks that I have to do before leaving the office...
I did a local application to manage those tasks, so basically I just want to run a command, and shut down after I kill the app executed.
I have already tried with these options:
/etc/gdm/PostSession/Default --> this works only when I select LogOut option instead Shutdown. /etc/rc0.d/K01mycustomscript --> execute script after X is killed $HOME/.bash_logout --> This looks like does nothing. ./app-to-run && sudo shutdown -h now --> Don't like it for 2 reasons, prompts for sudo password, and can't use my laptop shutdown button.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04.
I dual boot Ubuntu and Windows and sometimes I just want to switch between the partitions without loosing the state of the OS I was currently working with. Currently to do that I just hibernate that OS and, when the computer turns off, I restart it and select the correct partition.
I do not really want to have to press the on button again every time I want to switch between partitions. I figure that there must be a way to make the hibernate action restart instead of shutting down.
How do I make the hibernate action restart instead of shutting down on:
Windows, or Ubuntu
P.S. It is more important to me that I can do this in Ubuntu than Windows (because of the way I use the partitions) therefore if one answer says the Ubuntu way and the other says the Windows way then I will mark the Ubuntu one as the answer and give the Windows one an upvote and a big thankyou.
I am accessing a linux server remotely from my putty. I started the server and now I want to close the command line. when I do cntr+c or cntr+z it kills my server aswell. how will I close my terminal without closing my server? I tried cntr +d but it is not doing anything

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 and it works fine. Next, I attempted to install Apache 2.2.16 server on the machine. I was able to get Apache installed but I cant't get it to start. The command I used to get it to start is "apachectl -k start" and got the response "command not found". Then I used the absolute path which is "/home/Administrator/Downloads/apache/bin/apachectl -k start" and got the response"httpd: could not reliably determine ther server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80.no listening to sockets available, shutting down". Please advise me on what to do. My eyes hurt from looking at the screen for so long trying different options and reading almost all the apache install instructions that exists. Just ready to have it up and running.

At first everything was fine, it was working in Ubuntu and Windows...Now Windows is not sensing ANY networks...I'm hoping this isn't permenent, but 5 restarts later, it's not working.Plus the connection in Ubuntu is VERY shaky. at first it says 85%, then it goes to 25% and then disconnects.I haven't been able to use the internet on it yet.

I have been using digikam in linux, and I like it because I can just browse the pictures directly from my directories (and it is easy for me to keep directories synchronized within mac and linux).
I have been testing iphoto and aperture, which are quite nice but if use them, my understanding is that I have to import all the pictures into these softwares, and this doesn't seem to be the ideal solution for me. I tried picasa, but I don't find it as good as iphoto and aperture. On the other hand it allows me to browse directories, without having two copies of the same pictures.
Apart from lynx, which other linux command can I use for browsing the web incase I don't have lynx installed?

The problem is with Bluetooth connectivity to my cell phone device.It connects to the cell phone and set trusted but I can't seem to see any option of "Browse files on Device".Does that mean in KDE I actually can not browse my Bluetooth connected devices?The same thing happened with Mandriva2010-Kde and Fedora13 Kde , I mean I guess It's related to KBluetooth app.

What I have noticed is that browsing of that archive with gnome is much slower with ubuntu than winXP ( dual boot , same PC ) where it is almost instant.I have disabled assistive technologies and installed Thunar file browser. It improved things but again the lag is important. Linux is in general much faster than windows, so I wonder why is it happening ?

I have sym link of a folder in /var/www/test (test is the symlinked folder). If I write in the address bar of the browser http://x.x.x.x/album/img_name.jgp I can see the picture, but I want contents not to be available. So I have apache running on my local computer. When I open up local development sites in tabs in my browser, apache threads are started. That's as it should be. However, when I close the tabs, close the browsers, and then run system monitor/system task manager, I get a long list of apache threads that are sleeping, waiting around for god knows what. How do I get these apache threads to stop hanging around?

On Windows I used IIS and pointed my website to a directory full of video files all in .avi containers, enabled directory browsing and could watch files in the browser on my PS3.
I'm wondering how I go about doing this in Apache? Since there isn't any GUI to do it for me like in IIS :P.
Recently I installed a backtrack 4 final on my computer, but I couldn't browse the internet by wifi , when I use the slax networktool to analyze the newwork and see what the problem is, the tools showed as below:
wpa-supplicant:error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. I also cann't find the libssl.so.0 in the corresponding diretory.
Title is self-explanatory. I turn on swap, restart, and it's off again. Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. I tri-boot with Win7 (32-bit) and LMDE (32-bit) if it matters.
