In my network the client systems access internet through my server which has ubuntu 9.10 server edition in it.I gave my server's ip address as name server's address in /etc/resolv.conf file in the client systems. And i have assigned static ip to my systems. i have not configured squid in my server.I just want to know whether the website acessed by the client systems will be registered in the server or not, with the coresponding ip addresses.
i have checked system log file in server, but i can't find any ip address entry of the client systems in it.which file i have to actually check, or should i need to configure any extra things to monitor the clients web history in server.

I am facing two issues with CUPS - 1. I have installed cups 1.3.9 over OpenSuse11 x86. Please check below -
cups:/usr/share/cups/banners # cups-config --version
1.3.9
cups:/usr/share/cups/banners # cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.27.7-9-pae (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 4.3.2 [gcc-4_3-branch revision 141291] (SUSE Linux) ) #1 SMP 2008-12-04 18:10:04 +0100
I have added few printers over there and everything is working fine. I can also able to add - delete - modify any printers from "yast2 printer" command. I can also able to browse cups web interface via http://cups:631, but when I am going to manage the printers (start - stop - delete etc), none of the buttons are working in firefox5 not even in IE also. Older version of firefox is giving error as "This address uses a network port which is normally used for purposes other than Web browsing. Firefox has canceled the request for your protection." All other buttons are working properly.
2. LINUX - LINUX Printing - OK
LINUX - WINDOWS Printing - OK
WINDOWS - LINUX Printing - NOT OK
While giving printing from Windows machine (Printer attached on Linux), there is no problem to coonect the printers, but unable to print.

In short: browsing the internet with domain names does not work. The long version: I've configured my network with DHCP and ifup. Ping works on my internal net and with servers in the internet. Dig work's too! I get the right IP to the requested domain. When i try to access the internet using firefox or even wget i get an DNS error. For example wget is showing the following error: Resolving heise.de... failed: Name or service not known. wget: unable to resolve host address 'heise.de'
Again dig show me the right IP and if i add the entry to /etc/hosts it work's too! I've even tried it with manually setup of ip address, nameserver and default gateway but with the same result. Switching off the firewall has no effect on this problem, too.

I've just installed Slackware 13.1 in two different laptops for first time. I have some strange internet browsing behaviour in one of the laptops. I've installed 2 internet browsers(firefox, opera) using the directions from Slackbuilds.org and there is also konqueror pre-installed. Moreover I installed Wicd network manager.
I can browse some pages e.g. ..... with firefox very slowly but NEVER facebook. I can browse almost any page, even facebook, with OPERA but very very slowly. The same goes with konqueror... Wicd shows that i am always connected with my WPA wireless network

This seems to be a catch-all "... we didn't resolve your link request so we are sending you here ..." page. It lists various candidate links as alternatives to the link I was seeking. Strangly, the page often lists the exact same link that I sought in the first place. I can understand the occasional DNS lookup failure due to heavy net traffic, heavy demand for the target name serverheavy demand for a specific site link, and so on. Sadly, this happens to me at least daily and often several times every day. That hardly qualifies as "occassional" under any reasonable definition.I am in Austin, Texas -- supposedly one of the US "very wired" cities. Can anyone shed light on this happening? Is there anything that I might be doing to provoke this happening? Is Time Warner DNS in general or Austin in specific just that bad?I've tried brief experiments with other DNS servers, but they each presented their own troubles. I suspect a loose nut in the net-admin chair

I'm hoping someone might be able to suggest what went wrong with my networking, so I can continue using OpenSUSE! I've been running version 11.3 with KDE (64 bit) for a few months now (dual booting with Ubuntu); everything had been working fine until about a week ago - the only issue I had was that some internet-based things seemed a bit slower than in Ubuntu.
Anyway, after the last set of updates I installed (around Jan. 6th; there was a kernel update and a few other things. I'm not sure where to locate the history in YaST) I lost functionality of all internet-based programs, with the exception of Firefox. (I'm using Firefox in openSUSE right now to access this forum, for example.) Although I can browse the web just fine, I can't use Thunderbird to check email, the weather and comics plasma applets don't work, and the system can no longer connect to the software repositories.
I didn't change any settings (to my knowledge), but somehow Internet access is being denied to most of my system!

I am using Linux and Windows 7 on the same machine and my on-board NIC is functional under both. However, the weirdest thing happens when I browse the internet under Linux and then return to Windows; my NIC stops being recognized! This happens under Windows but also in Linux when I return! This problem is then easily fixed by resetting the CMOS, but inevitably occurs again. Why does this happen? Update The CMOS reset works but is not necessary for me. Shutting down and unplugging the power cord works as well.

I noticed that KDE does not have a way to browse for network printers like Gnome does. I installed system-config-printer to fix this(if there is a KDE route that would be nice as well). Anyway, I go to add a printer and select "Network Printer" and click "Windows Printer via SAMBA". This is where i would typically press "Browse..." but it is unclickable. This leads me to believe that I am missing a package. Essentially my question is: What are the necessary packages to access Windows printers via SAMBA with system-config-printer?

I recently installed 11.2 and Firefox takes several seconds to connect to each site.I pinged my machine, the gateway, the DNS servers (by IP address), and other various sites (by domain name), all without delay. But when I browse using Firefox, there's a 3-second delay while "looking up", and finally it connects. Any ideas what's causing this? I'm using Gnome and don't have another browser installed to test.

My samba seems to be mis-configured somehow. I had been using Ubuntu 10.04 and my samba browsing of my samba shares on my HTPC (running XBMCLive) had all been working fine. Then I upgraded to openSuSE 11.2 64bit. Great OS by the way!Ok so I chekced my other PC's running Ubuntu and going to the network folder I see my XBMCLive machine. Double click him and now I see my shares on that PC. So now I know its specific to my SuSE install.
Now on SuSE if I use Dolphin file manager and go to Network -> Samba Shares -> workgroup I dont see anything. And then down the bottom of the window I will see timeout error on workgroup. "workgroup" is the correct workgroup. All the services are running winbind, smbd, nmbd, xinit, swat. Firewall disabled. However when I try the above and I get the timeout error I then go to the address bar in Dolphin where it has smb as the drop down item and in the text field type in the XBMCLive PC ip address and hit enter. Then immediately I can see my shares!!! So it is working but I cant see my shares under Network->Samba Shares->workgroup.I notice in my samba error logs for log.smbd I keep seeing this;smbd_open_once_socket: open_socket_in: Address already in use

I've recently installed openSUSE 11.4 (64 bit) on my system and am experiencing severe performance issues with websites using https (any site using https). Page loads over https take anywhere between 30 seconds to 2 minutes. It's the same issue posted here Secure sites load slow or not at all -- there was no confirmed solution.
- My router/hardware configuration has not changed in a long time and I've run Ubuntu, Arch Linux, and Windows XP on the same machine within the last year and have not had any issues.
- I also have a laptop running Arch Linux (kernel 2.6.38) and this problem does not occur using Firefox 4 or Chrome. To add to the madness this problem occurs while running Firefox 4 inside a Windows 7 guest via virtual box, but NOT while running IE 8 inside the same guest.
- This issue occurs using Firefox 4, Chromium, Opera, Konqueror, and Arora.
- I've disabled ipv6 in Firefox via about:config.
- I've disabled ipv6 in yast and have attempted to use both the "ifup" and "networkmanager" options.
- I am not using a proxy server.
- I've attempted the fix posted in the Ubuntu forums for a similar problem [ubuntu] [SOLVED] Banking Site is very slow.

My LAN has 2 PCs installed, Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows XP. I run the server on Ubuntu, and client on Windows XP. Because I am doing stress test, so the client will keep sending tons of packets to server.
The strange thing is: After few seconds, the client program crash because of insufficient network buffer, the server is still ok. But after that I cant connect Ubuntu PC anymore until I restart it. And I check the router, the led for the Ubuntu PC is always ON (not blinking), look like it is jam already.

I currently have a LAMP server running with multiple virtual hosts configured. I have one virtual host with a sub directory that contains pdf news letters.do not want the directory browsable and tried putting an index.php file that re-directshe user to the root directory but when I go to the [web address]/[directory name] in any browser I see the contents of the folder listed.
Currently the news letter list is drawn from a database table and displayed as links on a page in the root directory. The links point to the file name in the sub directory. How do I block users from going to that sub directory and seeinge contents of that directory listed? Would I add another <directory> statement in the vhosts.conf file? If so how would I structure that directive?

I'm running 11.2 on a Dell Latitude D630. Everything has been great other than issues with Suspend and hibernate not working correctly. However after about a month of use browsing the web has really slowed down bad. It doesn't seem to matter if it's in Firefox or Chrome either. I am using a wireless connection that is getting the signal at 85-95%. Even though I still tried using a direct cat-5 connection to the router and it was still slow as well. I have the fastest broadband connection my cable offers and my windows boxes on the same network are still flying.

Upgraded two machines to 11.3 in the past 2 weeks. NFS is broken on both, in different ways. The problem I'll mention here is that the nfs server is running, but clients can't connect.
The server is running:
tinderbox:~ # /etc/init.d/nfsserver status
Checking for kernel based NFS server: idmapd running
mounted running
statd running
nfsd running
It has a valid export list:
tinderbox:~ # showmount -e
Export list for tinderbox:
/usr/local/share/common 192.168.1.0/24
The export exists:
tinderbox:~ # ls -lR /usr/local/share/
/usr/local/share/:
total 4
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 Jan 2 12:10 common
/usr/local/share/common:
total 0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jan 2 12:10 test.txt
But attempts to mount the export are unsuccessful, both from the local machine:
tinderbox:~ # mount.nfs 192.169.1.200:/usr/local/share/common /mnt -v
mount.nfs: timeout set for Sun Jan 2 12:14:19 2011
mount.nfs: trying text-based options 'addr=192.169.1.200,vers=4,clientaddr=192.168.1.200'
mount.nfs: mount(2): Connection timed out
mount.nfs: Connection timed out
...and from an OpenSUSE 11.0 machine.
moira:~ # mount.nfs 192.169.1.200:/usr/local/share/common /mnt/tmp/ -v
mount.nfs: timeout set for Sun Jan 2 11:52:17 2011
mount.nfs: text-based options: 'addr=192.169.1.200'
mount.nfs: Unable to connect to 192.169.1.200:111, errno 110 (Connection timed out)
mount.nfs: mount to NFS server 'rpcbind' failed: timed out, giving up
I've had NFS running on my local network for over a decade, and never had problems like this before.

I currently have a network with an older machine, which is (usually) operated in headless mode as a data & backup server, with a fixed IP of 192.168.0.10. I have two client machines, a desktop & a laptop, which use DHCP. All three computers are running Slackware-12.2, the clients with a full install & the server without any X components. I want to set the server to serve a scanner & have been following this link, which is mostly a rewrite of the man page for sane.d. I set up saned per the article, adding the saned:saned user. 'scanimage -L' works for both root & my local user on the server. I can ssh into the server as my desktop user & 'scanimage -L' works. Ditto if I ssh into the server, then 'su -' to root. I can scan either locally from the server or via ssh from the desktop machine. BUT, I cannot get the scanner recognized on the network. On the server, I have this line in /etc/sane.d/saned.conf:
Code:
192.168.0.0/24 this line in /etc/services:
Code:
sane-port 6566/tcp #SANE network scanner daemon & this line in /etc/inetc.conf:
Code:
sane-port stream tcp nowait saned:saned /usr/sbin/saned saned
I have changed the line in /etc/sane.d/saned.conf to just "+", for testing. That didn't work either. On the clients, I have these two uncommented lines in /etc/sane.d/net.conf:
[code]....
My server user is in the same groups, less vboxusers. The server is identified in /etc/hosts & I can connect to it via ssh & mount nfs shares from it. What am I (not) doing that is killing network scanning?

I'm putting a opensuse 11.4 64 bit KDE install on an HP -G62 laptop.
I also use an NFS network.
I want to use a wireless network.
The problem is that network manager keeps insisting on asking kwallet for permission to start up the network. As a consequence boot hangs because the nfs network can't find the files in /etc/fstab because the network can't start because you can't see kwallet until it finishes booting.
I have options set in networkmanager to store the password in connection secrets in secure storage, and it insists on asking kwallet!
I don't want to get rid of kwallet because it's very useful otherwise - just not at boot time?
How do I modify the behaviour shown here?

I'm trying to setup an Apache server on my computer which will allow browsing of files in a specific directory and subdirectories, without needing any sort of authentication.
I've got the Apache2 server up and running through yast, and everything works fine as long as I try to point it to the /www/htdocs folder. However, I want to point it at another folder, which is on another partition. This partition is formatted as NTFS, if that matters at all (here's some background on some permissions issues I had with the NTFS partitions recently).
When I change the "Directory" setting in the Yast http server configuration utility to the directory on the NTFS partition I wish to use, attempting to access the server results in the following error:
Code: Access Forbidden: You don't have permission to access the requested directory. There is either no index document or the directory is read-protected. If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

following on from [URL] I was having a little think about how to make this concept more secure. its easy enough to separate known and unknown clients out via MAC address. but that system is easier to break than it is to set up either, sniff out a mac address already connected to the system, and spoof that address.or, more simply, set a static IP on your wifi device, and avoid the redirection completely. so, is anyone aware of a relatively straight forward setup that would allow me to identify clients on my network without relying on MAC address, would more forcefully separate out known and unknown hosts (vlan??). As well as doing so without alerting them to the fact, and without requiring known hosts to do anything special, or install software. Or requiring any more hardware than I have already. (hardware = a debian box with 2 NIC's acting as a gateway between all internal network, and the billion router which handles the outside world not getting in, and a WAP attached to the internal side of the network. also somewhere I have a wifi card that I could attach to the server to replace the AP) I assume some sort of authentication mechanism is required, but I dont know much more past that.
