General :: Finding Alternative Filesystems For SSD?
Feb 14, 2011
I am tired of watching fsck check my filesystem when my eeepc 901 shuts down abruptly due to a crash. I know that with a journaling filesystem, I won't have to wait for a check. However, I am well aware of the poor I/O performance of the SSD, so I can imagine using a journaling filesystem being even more frustrating, since there will be constant writes to the journal? I will buy a new laptop without such a crummy ssd someday but, is there anything I can do now, on the software side of things?
Looking to get some input on finding a distribution to move to from Ubuntu.Overall, there's some changes--mostly unimportant overall, but stick in my craw--on the horizon, and I'm looking for alternatives. I'm a casual user, only one using my machine, don't need anything extra-special...something that isn't extremely utilitarian from the get-go, and doesn't come loaded with a boatload of things I'll never use. I enjoy putzing around in a CLI, and I'm not opposed to having to get used to slightly different commands when using it (though I expect that, on the whole, most things will be the same).I know, a little vague on what I'm looking for...best put, a stable system that doesn't require me to do TOO much, but lets me do what I want even if it means breaking things every once in a while.
I'm NOT referring to standard programs that allow you to view flash with internet explorer. I'm looking for a program in which i can create flash animated web icons.
I am wondering if there's a better alternative than jigdo. I was trying to help out and choose what is recommended but this jigdo crap is ridiculous. Didn't work for me and the primitive bad design of it is a waste of time.
Maybe Debian should consider joining today's technology. There are supposed to be hybrid isos you can download and even Ubuntu is finally joining the camps doing that. But, there's nothing on Debian web pages mentioning 'hybrid isos.' Who uses jigdo anyway? There's no way of entering the url or any instructions that make it intuitive. Get rid of the jigdo and do something different....
I'm using this tool for a while and can't be more pleased! The single file concept is just great and I still haven't found a feature I miss from phpmyadmin.
I'm looking for an alternative to OmniDazzle. I need one for making screencasts. In facts, I only need something that allows me to have a focus on my mouse or to make a focus on an item on the screen. I only need "Flashlight" and "Cutout"/"Focal point" functions from OmniDazzle.[EDIT]If it could add an effect on each mouse click, it would be great ![/EDIT]If there is a screencast software that allows me to do what I'm searching for, it'll be awesome !
I have some video files that are in H.264/MPEG-4 with 5.1ch AAC audio. I also have the 2 channel audio. I cant stream or play MPEG-4 w/5.1 with my 360 so I need to remux the video with the 2 channel audio. Its easy as pie with YAMB but how can I do it with Linux?
when editing an mp4 file from videos with avidemux, the editing works perfectly but the resulting video sound is speeded up but the image runs at normal speed. the resulting mess is out of synch video/sound.
Having been totally happy with Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 but after a recent fresh install of 11.04 I find myself extremely stressed out with the desk top.I absolutely hate the unity desktop. It's flakey, unreliable, with random mouseclick issues, random application crashes and poor performance both in the increased time it now takes me to navigate to the apps that I want to fire up and in terms of really slow rendering of menus. It's awkward to start up multiple apps (I typically have my IDE, eMail client, browser, ssh terminals to remote servers and at least one terminal running at any one time)
I use my system as a serious development platform and I have come to the conclusion that 11.04 in it's default configuration format (and also with the classic log in being just as flakey) has to go. It's costing me too much in lost development time.So I'm faced with a decision, move back to using 10.10, stick with 11.04 but find a very much better desktop alternative to unity (and I don't mean the classic log in options as already explained) or I ditch Ubuntu in favour of an alternative distribution.
Im missing my most favorite program: Fireworks. I could use WINE but I guess I should say good bye to comercially Adobe! So im looking for a good alternative.
Ive been wondering, if there is a audio player for Linux similiar to Foobar. The only thing Im searching for is the ability to sort media library by folder structure. If you know something that can do the job, let me know... Im also searching for easy, intuitive text editor, like Notepad++. I use it for working in school and i just love the way it handles "tab" spaces, and bullet lists.
a program that works exactly like orbit downloader in windows for linux i use orbit to download ..... videos and music,i can't find another program like it in the repositories and google searches were getting me no where.
I'm using Ubuntu Karmic Koala with Gnome desktop.I listen to online radio with Rhythmbox, I have all the necessary URLs loaded in.Now Rhythmbox is a great program but it seems like overkill just to listen to online radio. Is anyone using an alternative for this purpose, something small and neat?
I currently run a home sever using windows server 2008. On it I'm using VMware to run 2 virtual machines (currently running CentOS (which is Red Hat based) as web and mail servers. It's not a big setup, we only host our personal websites and a couple for some friends. Although server 2008 handles resouces much better than server 2003, it's still running windows, which as we know is far more inferior to a Linux server. I'm trying to convince the husband to let me run everything on Debian, but he wants to run it on Red Hat (which okay, isn't bad but our household is devided. We have long running arguments because he likes his boxes Red Hat based running KDE, and I like my Debian distros running Gnome!)
The host server is running on a standard pc box, it's got a 2.5 gigahertz dual core processor and 3 gig of ram, almost one TB storage. (don't ask why I'm including this drastically important info!) I want to run the entire network on Debian. So that would be the main host running Debian and the two virtual machines also. The host itself would need to run as a file and app server for our home network and the two vertuals as web and mail servers. (we run about 12 domains three of which are under heavy usage with Mysql databases, so we run two servers so we can dedicate more rescources to the virtual server that sucks the most juice.) I was wondering how Debian handles virtualisation and what program(s) would be a good alternative to VMware?
I want to know what file system there are for "/dev" directory??apparently different types was developed for managing devices on Linux.because I am a little confused about all file system on this directory.Another question is,which is file system sufficient for managing devices on Embedded Linux ?of course on our embedded system we do not have many pluggable device,so this directory can be static
I'm now using Ubuntu 10.04 with ext4 and for the second time in my life I experienced data loss (not for real: I got backups) and I'm assuming problems with the recent ext4 fs.
I want to restore all of my configurations (/etc and the like), data and home on reiserFS: is this possible? What to do in order to accomplish that?
I need to combine 6 different filesystems into one filesystem using rsync. I am so confused as to which parameters I need to use. The 6 fileystems are:
When I try to start up 9.10 I can get past GRUB but not fsck. A file check will be started but no progress will be made and finally I get the 'General error mounting filesystems'.Trying in recovery mode I get this just before the fsck check
Quote: fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16 [8.016378] ACPI: I/O resource piix4_smbs [0xb00-0xb07] conflicts with ACPI region SOR 1 [0x0b00-0xb0f] /dev/sda1 goes fine Quote: /dev/sda3 has been mounted 34 times without being checked, check forced mountall: canceled
[Code]...
This seems to be slightly different than the other threads I've seen discussing this issue. It just all of a sudden happened, I didn't upgrade anything or have any crashes immediately prior.
I want the filesystem of my external drive to be checked periodically after a numer of mounts. I put 2 in the sixth colums of fstab for this partition
Code: /dev/sdb1/mnt/hdext3rw,dev,sync,user,noauto,exec,suid02 and I use the tune2fs to set the maximum mount count to 32. Code: tune2fs -c 32 /dev/sdb
now the mount count is 34 and the date of the last check is not recent, so apparently the auto fsck has not been performed. Probably because this partition is not mounted at start-up but I usually mount it manually.
I've read the first 40% of the RHEL 5 Logical Volume Manager Administrator's Guide, but still have one outstanding, burning question.
During the installation of Centos 5.6, I set up LVM physical volumes, volume groups and logical volumes. I can list these using pvdisplay, vgdisplay and lvdisplay commands.
How would I list what filesystems I have that are using my logical volumes?
