Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up USB Network Adapter?

I'm trying Ubuntu for the first time; it's actually the first time I've messed with Linux at all-- and, well, it's kind of intimidating. One of my hobbies is playing with dead computers, and long story short, I have Ubuntu installed to a partition on an external drive connected to an older Dell desktop with no internal storage to call its own. The only network adapter I have to spare right now is the rather wimpy USB one that came with said desktop. I have the CD with the drivers to it, but I think the Linux drivers on it are for a different distribution. Am I going to need to scrounge up another network card or adapter, or am I going to have to start sheepishly asking ridiculous questions regarding basic operation of the command console?
After had installed opensuse 11.3 I am about toset a usb stick and connecting to internet. I can connect with ethernet but as I want to have also wireless internet I bought a LEVELONE WUA-0605 wireless usb adapter witch I can't setup and connect... The only data witch I was able to find are:
I've an USB Network Controller product from China with no driver for Linux... It's seem in my FC10 not correctky fuctional... On Windows it worked as SR9600 USB To Fast Ethernet Adapter... here is my log...

A node on a cluster that our lab has had sitting in a dusty room since time forgotten does not seem to want to talk to the rest of the world any more.Following is the information I found was being asked for on other posts for similar questions, transcribed by hand.
Basically a few weeks ago I decided to try Linux, in particular Ubuntu. I have it installed in my Windows 7 partition but now I am willing to take the full plunge and switch to it all the way. The only issue is I cannot connect to wireless internet. It states "device not ready". Wireless is turned on on my laptop, I am very near the source, have tried making a manual connection with the network setup. I tried the hardware tester and it found my ethernet and wireless hardware (Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter). I went to the package thing and looked for Broadcam. I found a package but it was already installed. I tried it manually with:
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-modaliases E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
I then heard to try "sudo apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter" and did but it couldnt find it.As stated before I am new to linux so I'm probably missing something easy I just beg your patiance as I learn this new operating system.
I have a Belkin N150 USB Wireless Network Adapter and a Belkin N150 Wireless Router. I cannot seem to get NetworkManager to connect to the internet. I have blacklisted the 9.10 staging driver and associated rt files. I have downloaded and built the ralink 2.3.0.0 driver. The light flashes on the usb but I cannot connect to internet.

I am not sure what the ra0 is telling me but what about the Access Point: Not-Associated statement? Does that mean that the network adapter is not connecting to the router?
I have a crappy cat5 cable that only works at 10BaseT settings on any nic. I have a gigabit nic which I configure using;Quote:ethtool -s eth2 speed 10 autoneg offProblem is that this setting doesn't stick after a reboot. How do I make the change permanent?
I've installed it and it looks great. my problem is that I cant connect to the net since I could not find the driver for my onboard network adapter. it is a Gigabyte GA 945 GCM S2L board. of coarse I searched their site but it says that Linux driver I have to achieve from 3rd party. the adapter's chipset is a Realtek RTL 8111C but I could not find the driver for it. the only one that I've found - doesn't work. I must point out that when I've searched driver for my Nvidia display adapter- I've found it on Nvidia's site and it works great.
I have an HP Pavilion dv5 1002nr laptop running Vista. I decided to install Ubuntu using the windows installer, which did install well, but I decided that it wasn't for me, and uninstalled it. Now, my wireless adapter which is a Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g can see the network, find networks by itself, and is supposedly installed correctly according to Vista, cannot connect to any networks at all despite being able to see them and acquire a signal strength. Up until installing Ubuntu I have never had an issue like this. Other devices have no trouble connecting to this network, and I am currently using a Netgear wireless usb dongle to connect to the very network that my Atheros can not connect to.
On my desktop, I have Windows 7. I just also installed ubuntu on a partition in order to dual-boot. The installation worked fine, however now I cannot use the internet on either os. I have a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller On Windows 7, the LAN flashes from "Enabled" -> "Identifying" -> "Network cable unplugged". It does this on a seemingly continuous loop. When I disable it, it will not let me enable it. It says it can't start. Also, I uninstalled and re-installed the driver for my ethernet with no change.On Ubuntu, when I try to do "ifconfig eth0 up" and "dhclient eth0" I get the message "No DHCPOFFERS received. No working leases in persistent database - sleeping."
I've been trying to understand how Linux creates the network/interfaces on a machine (been reading the Linux admin guide), but as I'm pretty new to this subject, I've got lost in the forest.
To provide with my goal: 1.) Learn about network setups on Linux 2.) Be able to maintain my own (virtual) network 3.) Configure my (virtual) network
I used Several Distos, went to school up to Linux 225, but haven't used Linux for years. I have an older (P4, Win xp) laptop I use at the coffee shop. I want to put Linux Mint on it. I use a USB Adapter (Arilink101 AWLL6075) for Wi-Fi. I tried the live CD and, of course, USB Adapter doesn't work. In the half hour I looked at it, I realized I forgot a lot of things. I could not even find the laptop USB. Will tring to get it to work be the typical Linux thing, where you download the drivers, do the install right, and it doesn't work? You compile drivers, set everything up right, and it doesn't work?
I just got a new AZiO AWU212N 802.11n wireless usb adapter (linked below). One of the product reviews said that it works with Ubuntu if you upgrade to the .34 kernel so I thought it would be a good buy. I updated my kernel and Ubuntu detects that there is a wireless adapter, but doesn't detect any networks. My old wireless-g adapter can connect just fine, so I don't know what the problem is.
I am trying to install a Star Tech PEX300WN2X3 wireless card but I'm completely lost. The installation Cd has 2 tar. files with the linux drivers but I'm just clueless as to what to do with them.
i just installed Ubuntu 11.04 64bit on my desktop. i have a TP Link TL-WN321G (Ver 4.0) wireless usb adapter to connect to my wireless network (i used to use it with Windows XP).As expected (i'd read up a bit before installing Ubuntu), the adapter was autodetected - i could see my wireless network listed in the networks list dropdown, and lsusb showed it too.lsusb identifies "Bus 002 Device 002: ID 148f:2070 Ralink Technology, Corp. i tried going through the forums for possible solutions, but most of them deal with how to get it working when the adapter is not detected, or when networks are not shown. Or they are for older Ubuntu versions.i use the same wireless network on my laptop (Ubuntu 9.04), and it has a WPA & WPA2 Personal security, with a password, which i've configured in the desktop as well.
May I put a USB 54Mbps Wireless Network Card Adapter into Ubuntu Studio- 64 bit, does the 64 bit Ubuntu Studio (9.10) support this usb wireless network card adapter? how to let it work in Ubuntu Studio 9.10
I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 (both 64-bit) and my USB WiFi adapter which previously worked fine stopped working. The adapter is a Hama USB stick based on the Ralink rt73 chipset. I've tried using the Ralink drivers that come with 10.04 (both rt2800usb and rt73usb) but neither work. When I use rt2800usb, the adapter is recognized as interface wlan0, however I can't see any wireless networks. When I use rt73usb (and blacklist rt2800usb to avoid conflicts) I no longer have a wlan0 interface and there is no wireless adapter shown in the network manager. I've pasted in the results of lsmod, lsusb, and ifconfig -a (with MAC addresses removed) below.
I have somehow messed up my network (onboard) card in the process of configuring network settings. how I managed to do so is that I did not use ifdown before making changes to my "/etc/network/interfaces" file. Also I think it might be relevant to mention that the sshd was running -although with no active connections at that time- since I have the service installed on my 10.04 Ubuntu Server (x64). So step by step what I did to end up with no network connection:
3) sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces and then applied my network settings (IP, netmask, etc.). The syntax and configuration of my "interfaces" file is without flaw since it was simple, typical and was assigning my up to then DHCP assigned IP of 192.168.2.3 to static.
At about that point and although "ifconfig" showed the changes had been applied as planned the network card stopped working. I could no longer ping anyone but myself and the leds both on my network adapter and on my switch were turned off. Since my configuration also has a Windows 7 installation I rebooted to Windows in hope of troubleshooting through device manager but I got an error code 10 which means that the adapter could not start. Did I fry my network adapter for good and for all or I still have a chance of repairing it?
PS: After a closer look I saw that the NIC's LEDs indicate that the device cannot start. I am considering to reboot my MB as a last resort since the NIC is an onboard device and changing BIOS settings has done nothing to restore it.
I have tried to install tp link tf3200 network adapter without success . the os is 8.04 hardy loading drivers is new to me. the driver is sundance (i think) and the output from the make command is shown below.

I have a Toshiba MX35 laptop it's a little old but does the job. I'm have a problem getting the wireless to work. I can boot a live CD either Ubuntu 10.10 or Fedora 14 and they will see the wireless card. The card is Atheros Communications Inc. Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01).
I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed and that is the OS that is having the problem seeing the wireless. The computer will not handle Ubuntu 10.10 (at least it won't handle the desktop effects under Ubuntu 10.10) but handles them just fine under 9.10 and that's why I have 9.10 installed. I really need the Wifi to work because I'm going to travel in a few days.
Is it possible to create virtual network adapter on the same physical network adapter? or How to give or have multiple MAC Address to the same adpater? I m working on centos 5.3.
When a second network adapter is fitted, the boot script fails to configure the default gateway. Here's from /var/log/messages with DEBUG_ETH_UP="yes" configured for the boot script Code: Feb 13 10:22:23 ps1 logger: /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1: /sbin/route add default gw 191.168.1.1 metric 1 Feb 13 10:22:23 ps1 logger: SIOCADDRT: No such process
After boot the same command failed with the same message when done by root logged in via ssh but succeeded when run from the console After removing the second network adapter, the boot script is able to configure the gateway.
EDIT: or not. The problem now seems intermittent Now with only the onboard network adapter the same "SIOCADDRT: No such process" error is logged during boot and the "/sbin/route add default gw 191.168.1.1" command fails at the console too. Am experimenting with disabling the onboard adapter and fitting the NIC.
EDIT 2: definitely intermittent. Just rebooted with no hardware changes; same error during boot and route -n showed no default gateway but "/sbin/route add default gw 191.168.1.1" worked.
I recently installed the latest and greatest Lubuntu 64 bit, because I like lxde and I am planning a system migration. (I am really starting to not like windows 7.) I have some linux experience. I wouldn't say I am awesome at it, but I am comfortable trying anything.
Example: I have used CENTOS 5.6 to make a linux machine server as a glorified router, with asterisks, SIP, SSH server, x windows, GNome, VNC, and a user authentication system. and get this I walked somebody through setting this up over the phone. I reopened the root account (I honestly got tired of typing sudo every other command is the only reason why I opened it.) I plan on closing it after we are done.

I have the driver CD. I installed ndiswrapper.I copied the files from my driver cd to my <home> Directory. Then installed the Windows XP version of the drivers using ndiswrapper -l <driver>. I then made ndiswrapper force the driver to the vendor ID of the wireless card. Using ndiswrapper -a <vendor ID> <Driver>(I did this last night and the vendor ID escapes me. I am at work now.)I finally ran depmod -a and modprobe ndiswrapperI goto the windows wireless driver application, and it shows the driver as loaded and the hardware as found.
However, it still does not list a wireless device in the network manager to where I can connect to my wireless. iwconfig does not show any wireless LAN, but it is still listed in lsusb. Also, the light that shows activity on the wireless device does not light up or blink at all. I have about 6 usb ports on my desktop and have tried everyone. The wireless card also works in Windows 7 64-bit On a strange side note. I do have internet access through LAN, (My laptop is atm a glorified wireless card .)
I recently switched from Windows XP to a clean install Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 but it seems to be quite a problem to get the wifi up and running. In Windows the nearby network all appeared in network connections but the same section in Ubuntu is empty. So I decided to go with the ndiswrapper guide to solve the problem with an unclaimed driver. After an entire day messing with my computer I'm still not close... Below follows excerpts taken from the Ndiswrapper guide with posted results from my computer. "ndiswrapper won't work until it thinks that your Windows drivers have been properly installed and that they are the appropriate ones for your wireless card. You can run the command: ndiswrapper -l"

It seems like the network is disabled or unclaimed or both. What to do? I'm stuck after spending an entire day trying to install the wifi. I had no problems in Windows XP but it seems to be quite impossible in Ubuntu.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 (32 bits) and a wireless usb adaptor Alfa Network AWUS036H with Chipset Realtek 8187L. After a few minutes connected, the adaptor disconnects and I can't reconnect again. I search this forum but I'm not sure about what to do. Do I need to get and install another driver? I need to use the windows driver?
