Fedora :: Check DHCP_HOSTNAME Is Being Sent / Used?

Mar 8, 2010

I've recently installed FC12 and would like to leave this PC setup to grab an IP via DHCP. I use BackupPC so it needs to have a dhcp_hostname set so the machine can be located for backing up, and all that appears right however BackupPC can't find it.

When I run Angry IP Scanner, the hostname shows as N/A. Is this possibly a function of SELinux? In contrast, my FC11 box shows a hostname but I don't run SELinux on it.

How can I check for certain that the machine is submitting its hostname when it requests an IP?

Debian :: Migration Check List - To Check - Prepare Or Reconfigure

Feb 3, 2010

I am new to Debian but not Linux-based systems. I have been experimenting a lot with Debian Lenny/Squeeze. I am growing more comfortable each day with the Debian design. Yet there remain many unexplored areas. I am creating a migration check list. Things to check, prepare, or reconfigure when moving from one Linux-based system to Debian.

I have a good computer background and my current check list probably is fairly good. Yet I would appreciate input and opinions from experienced Debian users of things to watch in such a migration. Login defs, passwd/group files, different directory locations, keymaps, services and daemons, etc. I am not too concerned with the desktop as I plan to stick with KDE 3.5 for a while and I can basically move those settings across.

Fedora :: Check The Box For 'always Open In Browser Windows'

Sep 16, 2009

I'm running Fedora 11 64bit on an Acer Aspire 3935, dual boot with Windows Vista. I installed three days ago and the system is supposedly fully updated. While doing some routine configuring I noticed that I am unable to access the Preference window of File Management.

I want to check the box for 'always open in browser windows', but therefore I need the Preference window. When I try to access through System > Preferences > File Management, it says starting for a few seconds and then nothing. When I try to access through Computer > Edit > Preferences, the window crashes and disappears. I suppose there are other ways to change that setting, but in any case I'd like to get the general problem solved, not only the setting changed.

Fedora :: Gedit Spell Check Broken?

Dec 28, 2009

I am trying to check spelling in a text document, but gedit (v. 2.28.0) reports every word as incorrect. When I check the "autospell" option, it highlights the entire document. When I try to set the language, the language list is empty. I do have aspell and aspell-en installed, but gedit seems to ignore them. aspell works fine from the command line. The SpellChecker plugin is installed. Anyone has an idea what might be missing? Some env variable is not set correctly? Any other leads? (I am on Fedora 12).

I wouldn't be asking, but I'm tuning this up for someone who isn't command-line-knowledgeable.

Fedora :: Keep Aligned Check Box - Clears After Reboot

Jan 3, 2010

I have Fedora 12 & GNOME. But, this actually is an issue with many Linux distro's and GNOME. If I set the Keep Aligned Check Box Off - the next reboot it is back too set on. (Right click empty area on GNOME Desktop). I have searched many forums and search engines, I must be doing my search wrong there must be others that have noticed this, And the posts I do find on it are sometimes pretty old, so it does not seem like a bug would be around so long. I saw some notes about Nautilus also but no answers. FYI In CentOS 5.4 & GNOME it works properly.

Fedora :: Check Packages After Failed Update?

Jul 4, 2010

I've been a long time ubuntu/debian user, and I decided to give fedora a try. Durng my first set of updates after install, the updater (gpk) seemed to stall on an 'updating libraries' step (it lasted for over 12 hours). Anyway, I force quit the program, restarted the system, and all appears fine. What I wanted to ask is this; is there some way to check the yum log to see if the update completed successfully, or an equivalent to 'apt-get -f install' to fix any broken/partially installed packages.

Fedora :: Check Filesystems At Boot Time?

Nov 9, 2010

What are others' views and experience regarding automatically checking filesystems (running fsck) at boot time?To be more clear, I have left the ext3 filesystems on this machine set to require checking after a fixed number of mounts by using tune2fs with the '-c' option. I've done this mainly because of the following (from the tune2fs man page):

Code:Youshould strongly consider the consequences of disabling mount-count-dependentchecking entirely. Bad disk drives, cables, memory, and kernel bugs could all corrupta filesystem without marking the filesystem dirty or in error.e using journalingon your filesystem, your filesystem will never be marked dirty, so it will not normallybe checked. A filesystem error detected by the kernel will still force an fsck on the nextreboot, but it may already be too late to prevent data loss at that pointBut what does anyone else do? Is there really much risk to disabling this automatic checking

Fedora :: Weekly Raid-check Never Checks Md1?

Feb 21, 2011

I have three raid volumes, md0, md1, and md2. The weekly raid-check cron always causes md0 and md2 to get checked but never md1.

/etc/cron.weekly/99-raid-check

Volumes md0 and md1 are on the same 8 disks. Volume md0 is a small raid1 across all 8 disks for boot and md1 is a raid5 that occupies the rest of those 8 disks. Volume md2 is a raid5 on a separate set of 6 drives. When I check /var/log/messages* I see that every Sunday md0 and md2 get checked but md1 is never checked. However, when I run 99-raid-check manually, all three volumes get checked. There is clearly something different between how crond runs that script and how I run it, but I can't imagine what that would be.
