Ubuntu :: Firefox Overheats Machine And Shuts Down System

Jan 21, 2010

I have done a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 (from the CD), single OS on the machine, it seems to be working perfectly alright (better than windows 7 which was previously installed).Only one problem I am facing right now is when I open lot of firefox tabs, I can hear that the processor or fan starts making a lot of noise and eventually system shuts down abruptly, i can feel that the machine heats up. Than I have to wait for few minutes to let it cool and than start again. If i use firefox with (lets say) 2-3 tabs open, it works ok. but when i open over 4-5 tabs, it goes mad.

Red Hat / Fedora :: System Shuts Down After Login?

Feb 3, 2011

After I login as root, it displays the MOTD and shuts down. During the bootup process it says that Runlevel is set to 0. I checked through init and inittab, the runlevel was still 3. I didn't think this would be it because I'm already logging in, but I figured I'd try. I went through rc.sysinit, rc.local, shadow and profile and I cannot find a reason for it.

Ubuntu / Apple :: 10.10 On Macbook Pro 15" 1,1 - Intel - Laptop Overheats Until Shut Down - Freeze Every Time

Apr 5, 2011

I purchased a macbook (for cheap) without a hard drive and decided to go with Ubuntu 10.10 on my new drive.

This laptop has serious overheating issues. I installed the sensor applet and the fans are not coming on, even when the core temp exceeds 167(f). The base of the laptop becomes hot enough to fry an egg on.

I'd like to find a way to make the fans come on in an automated fashion (without having to do it at the command line each time I want them to come on). I'd even be happy with them on all the time if that will resolve the issue, as the laptop overheats until shut down / freeze every time I use it.

General :: XORG Freezes Machine In Firefox Right After Boot

Mar 29, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu Intrepid on a Dell laptop. I turn it off at night.Every morning when I turn it back on and open Firefox, I have to wait while the machine is busy/freezes for maybe a minute. This usually happens twice, but sometimes three times. The processor light is on solid when it does this.I've run TOP from the terminal, and it says it's XORG that's running.

This only happens when Firefox is running, and when I first turn on the laptop after it being turned off for a while. Every morning, when I first run Firefox, XORG takes control of the laptop. Not a big deal, but frustrating and worrisome.

Ubuntu Servers :: Networking - Machine Refuses To Give Access To The Internet Via Firefox

Sep 21, 2010

I have a machine (lets called it machine 1) with two networks card, eth0 and eth1. Both have static IPs. Once in a while the machine refuses to give access to the Internet via Firefox (eth0 is the route to router). Other machines on the network have no problems accessing the Internet. Eventually the machine would just magically start working again, but this time it just seems to have stayed broken. I've done some simple diagnostics and found:

a) I have another machine running Apache with a Wiki on our network - [URL]. Machine 1 is unable to connect to this Wiki. I get 'the connection has timed out'. I can ping 192.168.1.73 and it responds in the usual fashion.

b) If I try to ping www.google.com it times out with: ping: unknown host www.google.com. I can ping google using its IP address.

c) On machine 1 I have tried traceroute on both www.google.com and its IP and I just get:

1 * * *
2 * * *

And so on until hop 30. Doing this on any other machine on the network works. So while it seems I can ping internally in our network and outside, but when it attempts anything traceroute or URL related it does not work.

Ubuntu :: Machine Is NTFS As The File System?

Mar 28, 2011

A drive on my Linux machine is NTFS as the file system. There's a file corruption issue of some kind for copying files from the drive to another or another PC result in I/O errors. Overall, I work with 2 systems, one Windoze, the other Linux. I'm about to switch the roles of the 2 machines. The one with the corrupted ntfs partition is about to become my Windows machine and the Windows machine is going to become Linux.

Since I will be installing Windows on the machine with the problematic ntfs partition, I'm figuring at some point, Windoze chdsk will kick in and fix the drive. (Windows will be installed to another drive that is perfect right now.)

Is this a correct assumption? Or, do I do everything I possibly can to fix the corrupt partition prior to the new Windows install? If this is true, what are my options for fixing corrupted files under Ubuntu? Research I've done hasn't yielded much in results and a definitive answer for fixing corrupt files in Linux.

Ubuntu Installation :: Build A RAID-1 System With The Two 320GB SATA HD's The Machine?

Dec 30, 2010

I'm trying to install a box with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server with a typical LAMP system in order to replace my old Ubuntu 8.04 server I have at my school to have a "backup" system and also trying to replace NIS authentication with LDAP. Well I'm getting stuck on the first step: installation of base system.

I want to build a RAID-1 system with the two 320GB SATA HD's the machine has, I have a little experience in installing RAID because I installed my old 8.04 server with RAID-1 aswell.

I boot my box from an USB stick with Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64bit, the systems boots well, asks me about language, keyboard and so, finds the two NIC cards and the DHCP configuration of one of the card is done. Then it starts the partitioner.

One of the HD's already contains three partitions with an installation of a regional flavour of Ubuntu, the other HD only contains a partition for backups, I don't want to preserve all this stuff, so the first thing I do is to replace the partiton tables of both HD's with a new one. This is done without problems.

Then I go to the first disk, by example, and create a new partition, the partitioner ask me for the size, I write 0.5 GB (or 500 MB), then I select that it has to be a Primary partition at the beginning of the disk, all goes OK. Once created I go to the "Use as: " line, type Enter and select the option "Partition for RAID volume", when I hit Enter the error appears: the screen flickers in black for a second or two, then it shows a progress bar "Starting the partitioner..." THAT ALWAYS GET STUCK AT 47%!!!

Sometimes the partitioner allows me progress a little further (for ex. lets me activate the boot bit of the partition, or it allows me to make another partiton, even once the error didn't appeared until the first partiton of the second HD!!) but it always get stuck with the same progress bar at the 47%.

I've tried a lot of things: I downloaded again the ISO and rebuilt the USB, same result. Downloaded the ISO and rebuilt the USB from another computer, same result. Unplugged all the SATA and IDE drives except the two HD's, same result. Built a CD-ROM instead of an USB, same result. Downloaded the 10.10 server ISO (not an LTS), and the USB stick can't boot, is another error, but only to try.

Ubuntu :: Always Shuts It Down By Itself?

Jan 20, 2010

I've installed VMware server 2.x on my windows XP SP2 and installed Ubuntu 9.10 on the VMWare. I have noticed several times that the ubuntu machines shuts it down (not sure the time pattern but it could be that it shuts down after a certain minutes idle). As a result of that, I always have to restart it.

I checked the event log viewer, it looks like there's always a segfault just before it shuts down. I've pasted the last few lines of event log below.

Debian Configuration :: Copy Full System To Another Machine

Mar 31, 2016

I am setting up a mail server on debian. Once it's done, I'd like to have an indentical server on another machine, where debian will also be installed. The solution has to be hardware agnostic, so source machine is different than destination machine. I was reading on some wiki page that one can simply copy the root filesystem via rsync to the computer that he'd like to install the system on, then chroot to it and test if everything works. I'm guessing I'd have to change a couple things before, like :

- The network config
- The /etc/fstab file (disks and partitions may be different)

This article is about using rsync to transfer a copy of your "/" tree, excluding a few select folders. This approach is considered to be better than disk cloning with dd since it allows for a different size, partition table and filesystem to be used, and better than copying with cp -a as well, because it allows greater control over file permissions, attributes, Access Control Lists (ACLs) and extended attributes. OpenSUSE Install :: Reproduce Existing System On New Machine?

Jan 24, 2011

In the near future I will be obliged to change my computer. Currently, my system is OpenSuse 11.2 with KDE 4.5.3 on a dual-boot (with WinVista) laptop. I plan to have the new machine again be dual-boot (Win7).

First question: Is there a way to "describe" the current system in a way that, after the initial partitioning and probably a basic installation of OpenSuse 11.2, makes it easy to reproduce the current OpenSuse 11.2 installation (i.e., installed packages, profiles; more?) on the new machine? This would reduce manual work to copying some system files (e.g., /etc/csh.cshrc and similar) and of course /home/username etc.

Second question: Same as first, but this time with a change to OpenSuse 11.3 or the soon to come OpenSuse 11.4. A potential initial installation of OpenSuse 11.2 would be possible.

The operating system that will be loaded will depend on the user that logs in.
