I notice if I attempt to remove Plymouth with apt-get it attempts to remove the whole system with it, however I don't really like a boot screen and I would much rather have the typical kernel output. Mar 20, 2011I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 (and, on another server, 10.10) and can't seem to figure out how to remove the Shutdown and Restart options from the menu on the bottom right of the login screen.
I've tried
Code: gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gconf-editor and checking the /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_restart_buttons, but it doesn't do anything even after a reboot. I've also tried the above command as root (without the "-u gdm").
I have also tried adding the following lines to /etc/gdm/custom.conf:

Nov 3, 2010I downloaded Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop.iso and used the Fedora liveusb-creator to put this on a 2GB USB stick. Everything seemed to have gone well and it said complete; however, when I try to boot from the USB stick, I get a black screen with a linux copyright notice at the top and it just stays at that screen forever. I tried this on two computers with the same results.
I'd previously tried with Ubuntu and had a similar issue, it would go to a purple (if I remember correctly) Ubuntu screen and it sat that forever.

Nov 1, 2010I am running a dual boot system with windows 7 and Ubuntu. Both have run smoothly on my machine (Core 2 quad core on Gigabyte board) I recently upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04 via the update manager within 10.04. Following the upgrade the initial boot failed at the login screen ( i simply got the purple colored screen with a white box in the center of it). Instead of trying to figure out what went wrong, I simply re-installed 10.10 from live CD on top of the upgraded Ubuntu that was failing at the login screen. The live CD install seemed to fix everything for the most part ( I did notice some quickly flashing text right before the login screen. I think it was an error message but it was too fast to read)
My problem now is that I am trying to remove some of my old kernels from the Grub2 boot screen and I cant. I have read many posts on how to remove the old kernels, but my system is proving to be difficult. The old kernels definitely show during boot, but whenever I go into Synaptic they are not there. I have downloaded Ubuntu Tweak, and they do not show in it either. I have read the information at [URL] I went to http://www.fixthecode.com/remove-hug...sts-in-ubuntu/ and thought this would fix my problem but I keep getting an error: "awk: 1: unexpected character 0xe2" when i try to run: "dpkg -l | grep ^ii | grep 2.6.3x-xx | awk -F{print $2} I am running kernel 2.6.35-22 The kernels i want to remove are 2.6.32-23 and 2.6.32-24.
Fedora :: 13 - Screen Goes Black For A Few Seconds And Then Returns To The Login Screen
Mar 7, 2011This problem started within the last few minutes. I run a program in my browser that uploads data from my machine (ubuntu) to another machine (Fedora 13), for manipulation and then spits back the data that does not match our standardised information.
When I tried to run it a few minutes ago, it seemed to take a long time to make the connection. I went back and checked the machine, everything was connected and fine. I decided to reboot the machine from within KDE and then try again. Same result. I went to the machine again and tried to login through KDE, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns me to the login screen. I switched over to a virtual terminal and was able to login using the same credentials. I checked the .xsessions-errors file and this is what I am seeing:

Jun 21, 2011I accidentally clicked on a wireless network once and now every time I boot up, it tries to connect to that network and asks for the password. I have to keep pressing cancel and then it connects to my regular network.
I tried fiddling around with the network settings but I couldn't see any place where I could remove that network from the 'List of preferred networks' or at least try to prevent it from connecting automatically.
How to remove this network from the list of preferred networks? Edit some file somewhere maybe?

Oct 2, 2009I'm trying to install F11 on my old FSC Amilo Pro laptop. The installer starts fine, shows up on the screen fine, but the graphic installation window is wrongly positioned on the screen. It's about 300px too far to the right and about 300px too low on the screen, so that my Next, Back, Cancel buttons etc are off the screen.
