Is it possible to either remove or hide Plymouth during boot? I notice if I attempt to remove Plymouth with apt-get it attempts to remove the whole system with it, however I don't really like a boot screen and I would much rather have the typical kernel output. I'm probably a small minority of people who want it this way, but I like to see what is happening and if something is delaying my boot time.
View 3 RepliesI know how to go through KDE settings to "hide" a user from the login screen but I want to know where KDM is getting this info from. I've installed OpenSUSE 11.2 x64, configured it the way I like, and now I would like to clone it. Problem is that I logged into my own account while testing FreeNX and now my username shows up on the login screen. I want to remove any information that I logged into this system with an account other than root. I've Googled many times and still have no idea. I currently have two local users, root and user. The rest of my users authenticate and login via LDAP. The name of my LDAP user account is now always displayed on the KDM login screen. I don't want to disable the user list either, I just want to remove my account from the list before I clone the machine.

1. Hide the top panel or (better) remove it completely (I can live without global menu).
2. Make the Unity Launcher work like a panel - so it won't be possible to move windows behind it.
I actually got my boss to let me put Ubuntu on a laptop for a client and it works like a champ. I have it all setup but there's one thing I'd like to do on it. I have an admin user (the one I created during the install) and a desktop user (for the person receiving the laptop). I would like to hide my admin user from the login screen, so when it boots up all the user sees is their name. If I need to help them with something/install software I can choose other and login as my admin user.
It appears this was rather easy in 9.10 and previous but I can't figure out how to do it in 10.04. To be clear, I want to edit the user list, not disable it entirely. I've tried changing the user id, I found a post that claimed IDs less than 1000 were not shown on the login screen, this proved un-true in my case.
I'm looking for a way to hide the icons in the Gnome menu bar.
The only thing i've found is the gconf-editor and unchecking /desktop/gnome/interface/menus_have_icons, but that only affects the System menu and not Applications and Places...

I am running a dual boot system with windows 7 and Ubuntu. Both have run smoothly on my machine (Core 2 quad core on Gigabyte board) I recently upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04 via the update manager within 10.04. Following the upgrade the initial boot failed at the login screen ( i simply got the purple colored screen with a white box in the center of it). Instead of trying to figure out what went wrong, I simply re-installed 10.10 from live CD on top of the upgraded Ubuntu that was failing at the login screen. The live CD install seemed to fix everything for the most part ( I did notice some quickly flashing text right before the login screen. I think it was an error message but it was too fast to read)
My problem now is that I am trying to remove some of my old kernels from the Grub2 boot screen and I cant. I have read many posts on how to remove the old kernels, but my system is proving to be difficult. The old kernels definitely show during boot, but whenever I go into Synaptic they are not there. I have downloaded Ubuntu Tweak, and they do not show in it either. I have read the information at [URL] I went to http://www.fixthecode.com/remove-hug...sts-in-ubuntu/ and thought this would fix my problem but I keep getting an error: "awk: 1: unexpected character 0xe2" when i try to run: "dpkg -l | grep ^ii | grep 2.6.3x-xx | awk -F{print $2} I am running kernel 2.6.35-22 The kernels i want to remove are 2.6.32-23 and 2.6.32-24.
It is bit unconvenient to see the mouse cursor while watching a movie. Is there some sort of removal of it?

The problem is that I cannot get it back no matter how much I hoover or click with the mouse - it is gone!...So how do I get it back??? I am rather new to Linux, but I figure that there should be a config file somewhere where I can set "auto hide" to false or something like this.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu with a partition that was too small for any practical use, so I installed it again, thinking it would simply overwrite the other one as Windows would do. Obviously not. Now I have two Ubunto installations, neither of which work. I get a White Screen after the Ubuntu thing that shows its progress. If I try to boot from the CD, the Ubuntu thing works again, then I get a completely garbled screen which is totally unreadable and unuseable. I should also mention that I originally installed with a 19" square flatscreen from HP, but have upgraded to an Acer H233H. Since I have no clue what to do whatsover Ubuntu is just taking up space. I'd like to be able to use it, and I'd like to be able to get rid of one or other of the installations.

I've tried
Code: gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gconf-editor and checking the /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_restart_buttons, but it doesn't do anything even after a reboot. I've also tried the above command as root (without the "-u gdm").
I have also tried adding the following lines to /etc/gdm/custom.conf:

I am using Ubuntu 10.04.1 and I run it 24 hours a day. Recently one morning I went to my laptop and opened the screen but the login screen wouldn't appear. Anytime the cursor appeared, HDD activity would go to 100%. I'm assuming this because the HDD light on my laptop was permanently on. So I made the dumb decision of just holding the power button down and turning it off. When I turned it back on, I noticed it came to a command prompt type screen listing "initramfs" at the bottom apparently wanting me to input a command. I did a lot of research and couldn't find much of anything that would help me. I read about GRUB, superblocks, fsck, e2fsck, etc.. . I tried all of those and nothing has worked so far. Any ideas? I did notice one thing. When I went into the actual install with the livecd, it told me the drive was /dev/sda5, but in Disk Utility on the livecd, it told me it was /dev/sda1

my setup is: Asus p5q-e,
4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

I fixed this issue on 10.04, but just recently (1 hour ago) upgraded to 10.10 and am having the same issue. Machine boots fine, but the screen is blank for most of the boot, and plymouth is up for about a half second before I get to the login screen.I've tried searching the threads, but for the life of me I can't find the solution and can't remember what I did to fix it on Lucid.
