Aug 30, 2010Is there a way to set Linux to automatically log in to a specific user account and at the same time lock the screen? I want to save time and trigger various software that always should start up on boot, while leaving the computer unattended during startup (extra important and practical for remote control boots), by enforcing a 'screen lock' so that no-one can see what happens behind the login screen without entering the login credentials.

Oct 7, 2010I'm trying to get my screen to turn off whenever I lock my screen. I know that in Power Management, there's an option to turn off the screen after a set amount of time, and I know about xset dpms force off, but the former doesn't allow me to turn off the screen from the logout menu, and the latter only turns the screen off for a short amount of time (1 minute or so. The screen just turns back on by itself).
Is there a script I can modify to change what happens when "Lock screen" from the logout menu is selected, or is there a script I can add to the panel to lock the screen and then turn the monitor off (and turning it back on when I shake the mouse or something)?

Ubuntu :: Unwanted Automatic Shut-down, Lucid?
Jun 13, 2010Lucid was working okay for a few weeks. I believe this issue came up anew in the past few days after a recent system update. The (desktop) system when idle for x amount of time (likely > 1 hour) just shuts down while I am off doing something else. That is bad when downloading a large file that has to be started from scratch again (826 Mb of an 875 Mb file).
I have had to revert back to Hardy (kept in a separate partition) in order to get these wanted downloads. But I do a lot of downloading of film files, so this will be an ongoing issue until I can somehow correct it. I went through the screen-saver options/power management settings, found nothing unusual there, though I am not real certain of all the terminology there.

Jul 5, 2010I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. I've created two user accounts, one for admin purposes and the other for standard users. At boot up, I have the option to pick one of the created accounts or select "automatic login." When I select automatic login, it logs me into the admin account. I've double checked that the "don't ask for password" option is not selected on either account.
The only thing unusual that I did was select the "don't ask for password" option during the install, and then later (after the install was complete) decided that's not what I wanted and unchecked it.
I need to accomplish one of two things. Either change it so the auto login applies to the standard user account, or remove the auto login option from the login screen altogether.

Slackware :: KDE 4.4.5 - No Lock Screen - No Screen Saver
Aug 23, 2010What happens is that I resorted to deleting my .kde directory after my kid destroyed my profile where title bar, menu, konsole get broken. After deleting, I login again thus regenerating the .kde directory. To avoid my kid from messing my desktop, I tried to lock it. It does not lock.
It just need a KDE full restart perhaps since when I login the other day, it now works.
I'm updated to Slackware current for almost a month already and have not played a lot on KDE desktop (busy programming stuff).
However, on day I tried to lock the desktop in KDE to avoid the kid from destroying my cool desktop setting, but it didn't lock. Cool, so I tried screen saver and add an option to lock the screen.
When I test screen saver, it displays. But when I wait for 1 minute(I set it that way), it doesn't fire up. Not even after 15 minutes which I think the default.
It usually work before (several months ago) using the lower version of KDE. It is just last Saturday that I noticed it.
I tried to dig the profile management but I could not find anything relevant there.
General :: Remove Kernel Lock From Unmounted Mass Storage USB Device
Jun 3, 2010I've searched high and low, and can't figure this one out. I have a older Olympus Camera (2001 or so). When I plug in the USB connection, I get the following log output:

Secondly, the drive is not mounted in the FS, but when I run gphoto2 I get the following error:

What command will unmount the drive. For example in Nautilus, I can right click and select "Safely Remove Device". After doing that, the /dev/sg7 and /dev/sdg devices are removed.
The output of gphoto2 is then:

I press a a key or pass the cursor over and it opens but I have to enter my password then press the unlock button.I am none to happy with this happening each time I happen to step away from my computer for a couple of minutes. After about 2 mins it says something about a time-out (wish I could do screencaps). Then it will reset and have a gray window the same size as the password input window but on the upper portion of the screen, and a password entry window as normal, but in the lower part of the screen. Clean, fresh install.Before I was using 9.04 and had the same issue at first.I don't want the password lock screen when resuming from suspend.I disabled everything, lock in screensaver settings, all lock entries in gconf-editor. I also tried setting LOCK_SCREEN in /etc/default/acpi-support to false.Nothing helps Is this maybe a bug, since it's still beta? I don't know what else to do

Jun 9, 2010I am experiencing a really annoying issue with ubuntu 10.04. Wether the "lock screen when screen saver is enabled"option is ticked or not, it will anyway request me to insert the password.
And that's but the lighter problem: Screen saver keeps poping on while I write, browse and whatever, and changing its properties won't help at all. It just keeps pestering me! (while i'm writing this, i've already had my screensaver popping in about 15 times)
And last but not least, even if I log as administrator and unthick the "request password"... it will always keep asking ... what to do?

Aug 10, 2010my desktop cannot be locked anymore. Furthermore, after waking up from suspend, I am straight in the desktop, it does not ask me for my password anymore. The screensaver also does not activate anymore either. I'm still using Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Latitude D820.

Apr 29, 2011Living with others, I've made it a habit to lock my laptop if I walk away from it (Ctrl+Alt+L), but with the recent upgrade to 11.4 I've run into a problem: when I go to unlock my laptop it just gives me a black screen instead of the "enter your password" menu. All I get is the mouse.
The only work around I have for this is to log into a TTY and then restart the laptop.
In case it's significant, the exact process I go through is as follows: Lock my screen (Ctrl+Alt+L), close the laptop lid (power management is set to just blank the screen instead of suspend), walk away for 10+ minutes, open lid, and then I run into my error.
