Server :: Relational Interface/wrapper Around SQL Database?

May 19, 2011

I'm not a database guru, so be patient with me: Is there some kind of "wrapper" software you can put around an SQL database (MySQL perhaps) that allows you to internally configure database rules on a higher level than the database itself can actually implement? (E.g., "rows in table A can be deleted, but only if there are no related rows in table B and only if column x for the row in table A is in state y.")The idea would be to keep from having to trust this kind of logic to the client programs, while also avoiding the need to write a full fledged server daemon just for your application. The clients submit their SQL insert requests to the wrapper daemon, and the daemon passes them on to the database if they pass a rules table defined for that particular database.

Software :: Relational Database - Creating Workout Generator?

Dec 11, 2010

I have never worked with databases before, and would like to create one to be a "workout generator." i.e. have a name of workout, list of equipment, list of exercises, and instructions. Then be able to search by any of the above parameters (for example dumbells and pullups) to get a list of options. I assume a relational database is my best option, but my brief looks at SQL etc they seem quite complicated. A GUI frontend and good documentation are highly desired. GTK is also preferred.

Fedora :: "yum-plugin-remove-with-leaves" - Doesn't Work With Graphical Front Ends

Sep 19, 2010

I'm trying to switch from debian to fedora (13) and I'm stuck at getting yum to remove leave dependencies.

So far I've installed "yum-plugin-remove-with-leaves" and I'm able to remove leave dependencies if I invoke yum with the "--remove-leaves" argument from command line.

But this doesn't work with graphical front ends and I want to remove unused leave dependencies every time if I remove a package not just if I remember to invoke yum with the "--remove-leaves" argument.

Later on I discovered an option in "/etc/yum/pluginconf.d/remove-with-leaves.conf" named "remove_always = 1" and uncommented it. But yum doesn't seem to care. I still need to add the "--remove-leaves" argument otherwise yum isn't going to remove the leave dependencies.

How to configure yum to handle dependencies the way I used to know from apt under debian? Install a package with a graphical front end and dependencies get pulled in as needed. Uninstall a package later on and dependencies installed in the first place are removed as well if not needed by anything installed in between.

General :: Graphical Front End For Xrandr That Saves Settings On Reboot?

Nov 2, 2009

Is there a graphical front end for xrandr that also allows you to save your setup so that it automatically sets up the X configuration at boot time thereby simplifying this process. For example, at the moment if i want to use an external monitor on my laptop i have to manually set it up after booting as it defaults to the laptop resolution which is not a big deal but would still be nice to have this happen automatically. I tried putting a script into rc.local to do this but didnt work.I have tried programs such as lxrandr, grandr, arandr which are all good but dont allow you to save your choices so that they are automatically applied at the next boot of the X system.

Software :: Front End Database Application

Dec 22, 2010

Does anyone have or know where I can find a front end application that will inventory personal contacts or equipment such as model, serial #, location, etc etc etc? Looking for a PHP or front end proprietary application that will let me input data based on their database configuration so that I can see how schema's, databases, tables, and more are generated. I don't know how to program anything so I would think there are some available applications I could download / use to build my PostgreSQL database.

Fedora :: No Input From Front Mic With F12?

Jan 31, 2010

The microphone input of the soundcard itself (it is an on-board Realtek card, standard with most Nforce4 boards) works just fine. Recording quality is very good. But when I try to use the mic input on the front of my PC case, pulseaudio receives no signal from the microphone. Skype doesn't work, Audacity can't record anything either.

Everything is wired inside the case just fine, Windows XP has no problems in using the input on the front. Also the Line-out at the same panel on the front works in F12 without problems, it is just the mic input that doesn't work.

Fedora :: Looking For Sample MySQL And Web Front End App?

May 9, 2010

Really interested if anyone knows of any pre-compiled or pre-built demo applications that could run on a MySQL back-end with a web-based front-end?

Ideally, it would be really, really simple having a web front-end that attaches to the database and just either reads data from it (or even enter data into it). Nothing too flash.

I'm thinking along the lines of a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MYSQL, PHP) install but I'm not a developer so if I have to build something I'll probably be out of my league here Does MySQL/Apache etc. have sample/demo databases with a web-front end application that could be fired up and installed without having to build the environment?

Years ago I remember M$ had the PetShop .Net app running on a SQL2000 environment easy to setup and simple enough to showcase the database and a simple front-end. A colleague wrote a small .NET app to just read the data from it and continuously scroll the data in a text box which was fine. Something like that on Linux would be perfect.

Fedora Hardware :: 13 Does Not Use Front Speakers On SoundBlaster Audigy 2 With 5.1 Setup

Jun 19, 2010

I have a soundblaster audigy 2 connected to 5.1 speakers. The setup was working perfectly with Fedora 11.

I recently upgraded to Fedora 13 and found that it will only play through the center channel, the subwoofer, and the rear channels. The front speakers don't work.

I've tried all possible 5.1 configurations in the "Hardware" section of the "Sound Preferences" dialog. I've also played with the "PulseAudio Volume Control" tool (which seems to have the same functionality).

I also disabled all other sound devices on the system just in case.

Debian :: Automatically Start Graphical (SDL) Program As Root On Non-graphical Debian?

Mar 3, 2009

I'm not a Linux noob, but I am far from guru. I'm running a single board computer with a slightly customized Debian Etch (customized by the SBC vendor). No Gnome/KDE/X installed. My application is a control application which uses SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) to paint some basic graphics on the VGA. I need to run it as root because the application calls iopl() to access an IO port.If I run my application manually from the command line, life is sweet. From Googling around, I found http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/28, and hence I:1) Created a script in /etc/init.d2) Executed "update-rc.d scriptName defaults" to link the script into the boot sequenceAll very straightforward. My application starts at boot. But when I try to SSH/SFTP into the SBC, I get "Connection refused". So I can't manage the SBC anymore, and this is a big problem. I am not sure if it's relevant, but my application starts before the SSH daemon. My script looked like:

case "$1" in
start)
echo "Starting my application"

[code]...

Fedora :: Graphical Su - How To Set Up A Menu Entry To Be Able To Use App

Apr 26, 2010

There are times that I would like to open an app as root user without having to use the command line in order to do that. I learned of a nice app in the Fedora repos called beesu and I will show you how to set up a menu entry to be able to use this nice app.

From man beesu:

Code:

See man beesu for more information.

Beesu can be installed in Fedora with the following command:

Code:

IMPORTANT: Beesu must be installed in order to successfully complete this tutorial.

You can use beesu from the command line with the following example:

Code:

This will open gedit as root user after the correct root password has been entered into the password prompt. This is great. However, I'd like to open an app as root user without having to use the command line or alt+f2 run box. So, I wrote a small bash script that uses zenity to prompt the user for an app to open as well as the root password.

Copy the following code into a new text file and name it mybeesu.sh.

Code:

You need to change the /path/to bit in step 4 "Command" to reflect the path to which you saved the mybeesu.sh script. Click the OK button to save the new menu item.

Now, when you click the new menu item from the gnome menu, a zenity window will open asking which app you want to open. After that, a second window will open prompting you for the root password. If all goes well, and you entered the correct root password, your desired app should open as if you used su -c 'foo' to launch it.

I did try init 5 and it says Nvidia drivers are loaded. 3d was working just fine I haven't done anything that I can think of to provoke this.

At the GRUB splash screen at boot time, press any key to enter the GRUB interactive menu.
Select Red Hat Enterprise Linux with the version of the kernel that you wish to boot and type a to append the line.

Go to the end of the line and type single as a separate word (press the Spacebar and then type single ). Press Enter to exit edit mode.
