Fedora :: Gksu Graphical Authentication Program?

Sep 13, 2009

Does Fedora 11 gnome have that gksu graphical authentication program which allows a normal user to open tools such as that NTFS Configuration Tool to enable full ntfs write support ? I did try to find it with both yum in a terminal, and the package manager, but is not found.

Debian :: Automatically Start Graphical (SDL) Program As Root On Non-graphical Debian?

Mar 3, 2009

I'm not a Linux noob, but I am far from guru. I'm running a single board computer with a slightly customized Debian Etch (customized by the SBC vendor). No Gnome/KDE/X installed. My application is a control application which uses SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) to paint some basic graphics on the VGA. I need to run it as root because the application calls iopl() to access an IO port.If I run my application manually from the command line, life is sweet. From Googling around, I found http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/28, and hence I:1) Created a script in /etc/init.d2) Executed "update-rc.d scriptName defaults" to link the script into the boot sequenceAll very straightforward. My application starts at boot. But when I try to SSH/SFTP into the SBC, I get "Connection refused". So I can't manage the SBC anymore, and this is a big problem. I am not sure if it's relevant, but my application starts before the SSH daemon. My script looked like:

case "$1" in
start)
echo "Starting my application"

[code]...

Debian :: Make Program Run On Startup In The Graphical Env

Feb 21, 2011

I have a dedicated server which runs a game server. On that dedi, I had Debian installed, and I wanted to have graphical access to it so I installed Gnome and nxserver. I want the game server to run automatically when the server boots up and have it appear in a console window when I connect to nxserver. So I added it in the Startup list by going in System > Administration > Session.

My problem is that the program doesn't start when the system boots up, but only when I connect to nxserver. So I assume it is something like gnome not starting up or opening a session until I open one remotely or something such.

But is there anyway to have that game server start in a console window when the system starts up? I tried using init.d but the problem is that it doesn't open any window, and I need to interact with the server through the console. What can I do?

Ubuntu :: Graphical Program Over X Without Installing Any Sort Of GUI?

Feb 15, 2011

I have a really old Dell computer (Dell PowerEdge 1300) that I am wanting to use as a small server (samba file server and apt-cacher-ng). I installed Ubuntu server and then did "sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-desktop" which was a bad idea because it killed the performance. So here is my question.Ive read you can split the X client and server. Would that let me run a graphical program (like Synaptic) over X without installing any sort of GUI on the Dell?If that is the case, how would I go about doing so?If I would still have to install a GUI on the Dell, what are other options since the on-board display adapter seems to struggle with graphics?

Apr 6, 2011

I have a Gateway NV53 with a built in webcam. Now my issue is, it DOES work, but is there a program or software available that would allow me to edit the live graphical feed of the camera? For example, on Windows the webcam software allows me to edit the saturation, contrast, brightness, etc the levels of it while I'm giving off a live feed.So while I'm on webcam 0 can basically change the saturation level while I'm on skype and go from live in color to live in black and white? Is there a rogram available to UBuntu that would allow me to do the same thing?SO that if I'm doing a live feed of my webcam I can basically change how much color I am in etc.I'm running ubuntu 10.10 if that matters

Ubuntu Servers :: SQUID Authentication Via Website Or Other Program?

Jan 29, 2010

I would like to configure Squid and DansGuardian that way, that it's a Proxy with Authentication via Website. That means: A new Notebook gets about DHCP the Network-Information like IP-Adress etc.. When he now tries to open a Internet connection it should check if he's authenticated and if not he should get (if this try is from a browser) a login screen in http. It should also not be possible to have internetconnection without being logged in. The clients are Windoze, Mac and Linux. My question now. What programms/deamons are there for doing this authentication. Would you decide for another Programm instead of Squid?

I just installed the Catalyst drivers under FC13 (package xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-10.9-1.fc13.i686 ) and I am superhappy, as it worked straight out of the box.

The only little annoying thing is that I lost the Plymouth graphical boot, which is now substituted with the text scrollbar...

I edited grub.conf and added

Code:

Somewhere I read that that attribute is now obsolete and has to be changed to

Ubuntu :: Gksu Not Working In 10.10

Oct 11, 2010

I can enter my password just fine to log into the system, and using sudo from a terminal also works, but "gksu" does not. It tells me my password is incorrect. That means Synaptic doesn't work unless I "sudo synaptic" from the terminal. Anyone else happen to encounter this yet, or is it just me? I started with a clean install of Kubuntu 10.10, which I later installed ubuntu-desktop over and then removed. Would that possibly make a difference here?

Fedora :: Graphical Su - How To Set Up A Menu Entry To Be Able To Use App

Apr 26, 2010

There are times that I would like to open an app as root user without having to use the command line in order to do that. I learned of a nice app in the Fedora repos called beesu and I will show you how to set up a menu entry to be able to use this nice app.

From man beesu:

Code:

See man beesu for more information.

Beesu can be installed in Fedora with the following command:

Code:

IMPORTANT: Beesu must be installed in order to successfully complete this tutorial.

You can use beesu from the command line with the following example:

Code:

This will open gedit as root user after the correct root password has been entered into the password prompt. This is great. However, I'd like to open an app as root user without having to use the command line or alt+f2 run box. So, I wrote a small bash script that uses zenity to prompt the user for an app to open as well as the root password.

Copy the following code into a new text file and name it mybeesu.sh.

Code:

You need to change the /path/to bit in step 4 "Command" to reflect the path to which you saved the mybeesu.sh script. Click the OK button to save the new menu item.

Now, when you click the new menu item from the gnome menu, a zenity window will open asking which app you want to open. After that, a second window will open prompting you for the root password. If all goes well, and you entered the correct root password, your desired app should open as if you used su -c 'foo' to launch it.

Fedora :: F13 Not Booting To Graphical Login?

Jul 19, 2010

I recently installed fedora 13, everything was going great, now when my computer boots it shows the slash screen and then a blank screen and nothing. its been doing it the past few days, after a few reboots it'll work but i'm unable to figure out what is causing it and today it won't show the graphical login screen at all. after the Fedora slash screen the screen goes black the power button shuts it down as normal. ctrl - alt - F2 works and lets me login text wise but I can't get the graphical login to work. nor can I boot to KDE or gnome.I do have Nvidia drivers installed, normall it'll show the nvidia slash screen before the graphical login prompt comes up and that doesn't happen. I did try init 5 and it says Nvidia drivers are loaded. 3d was working just fine I haven't done anything that I can think of to provoke this.

Ubuntu :: Su And Gksu Don't Accept Password?

Sep 1, 2011

I have this issue on both Ubuntu and Lubuntu 11.04 64-bit on 2 different machines. I have not tested 32-bit.

When I run synaptic or update-manager it presents me with gksu, not gksudo as it previously did in previous Ubuntu releases, no matter how many times I try it will not accept my password.

I have even given it command line arguments to print the password to the terminal and it's correct.

I have found a workaround - by running gksu-properties and changing the mode from su to sudo it will now display gksudo and accept my password.

However, I want to know why it won't accept my sudo password for the su and gksu commands? There are no error messages which are outputted, the gui just says incorrect password.

Also, how would you login to an FTP server which is through a router, as the computer IP address will be assigned now by the router, right? Take Linksys router for example, don't they all assign IP addresses to network computers based on the router IP Address, 192.168.1.100, 192.168.1.200, etc?Since post above, I have installed vsftpd. Fedora :: How To Disable Graphical Boot On Fedora11?

My Fedora11 hangs on boot. I have no idea where or why it is hanging so I want to disable graphical boot. I booted the installation media, the root file system mounted on /mnt, seted /mnt as my root with the chroot command and edited /etc/inittab, then unmounted and rebooted but it didn't help me. Is it possible to run gconf-editor under live cd and disable splash? How can I boot Fedora in single mode? For example use the following steps I'll be able to boot RHEL into single-user mode:
At the GRUB splash screen at boot time, press any key to enter the GRUB interactive menu.
Select Red Hat Enterprise Linux with the version of the kernel that you wish to boot and type a to append the line.

Go to the end of the line and type single as a separate word (press the Spacebar and then type single ). Press Enter to exit edit mode.
