General :: Single Disk Space Quota Across Home Directories And Relational Databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL)?
Jun 10, 2011
Relational databases usually have their data over in /var/lib/something. Users are in /home (with data in /var/www). How can I apply a single total disk space quota across all of these independent software systems (file systems, RDBMS, etc.)?
P.S. There's a bet going on around me as to just how awesome SU is. Let's see what you've got.

I have my home server setup, running 10.04 x64. The OS is installed on a 300GB WD Blue drive, and I have a RAID5 array md0, consisting of 4x 2TB WD Green drives, mounted as /home. I am sharing the home directories using samba and using them to back-up the other computers in the house. I have created a user account+password for each computer, giving it its own "/home/computername_backup/" directory to store it's backups in.
Computers being backed-up:(750GB) Gaming PC running Win7 Ultimate x64
(30GB + 2TB) HTPC running Win7 Home Premium x64
(32GB) Netbook running Win7 Home Premium x32
(250GB) 2 Macbook Pros Running OS X 10.6.4 (tweaked to allow time machine to recognize the samba share as a time machine volume
Question: 5.37TB of /home seems good for now, and I haven't run into any problems so far, but I don't want to have to keep checking. I'd like to put a size cap on each user's home, to prevent one of the computers from gobbling up all the space. Is there an easy (or hard) way to configure this type of thing? My Macbook, for example, only has a 250GB HD. I could give it 3-400GB of space for its home and that would be plenty - whenever it filled its /home/, it would start erasing the oldest backups. If there is no size limit, I believe it will just continue to grow until all the free space is gone.
Considerations: Right now, the HTPC is storing all its media locally (on the installed 2TB drive). However, I've already used 3/4 of the space and the HPTC enclosure can only hold one drive. My plan moving forward is to have /home be used to store media files (iTunes music for all computers and tv/movies for the HTPC), which is another reason I'd like to ensure that the backups don't take up all the space.
I realize I could create a partition for each computer, but I'd prefer not to go down this route. This would seem an untenable tactic if I added another computer next month, or if I realized that the partition was too small.

What is the best way to create a hard (OS) quota on disk space folders? Basically in web root folder /var/www/lighttpd I have a folder called domains. I want to set a quota on each domain folder. The quota sizes will vary per folder. Is there a way to do this without creating a user for every domain? Currently every folder is owned by the lighttpd user and group.

I am using Ubuntu in a laptop. The C disk has 15GB, and Windows is installed in C disk. I installed Netbook Ubuntu in D disk which only has 10GB free space. Now I am trying to install some applications in ubuntu such as emacs. But the system says it only has about 450Mb disk space. So how could I get more space? Can I install the applications under some different path? without using apt-get?

To keep the story short, here's what disk usage looks like on my home: image
As you can see, home takes 100% but only 34% are actually occupied.

ran out of space in my /home dir. Have a second hard drive to install and would like to designate it as additional space for /home. I do not want to mount it as a dir inside my home I would like it to simply work as though my /home simply has more space available to it.

I was having issues with MySQL Server and uninstalled it. I still have my databases at /lib/var/mysql.
My question: if I install MySQL Server (same version, 5.1) again, will it delete my databases, or will they still work?

I cannot upgrade to 10.4, because my EEE 901 has a too small "system disk", 4GB. However, I do have enough space on my slower 16GB SSD disk. Can I move some recommended system directory there temporarily and symlink from the root disk? Would the upgrade data itself be a good candidate, perhaps? The work around would be to do a clean install of the new version, but I rather not, as I have some tweaking to do afterwards in that case. As it is now, I have 700MB of free space, and need about 1.4GB, if I'm not mistaken.

When going through my emails that are produced by the cron jobs ran on my Solaris servers, I am receiving a message that states,"/ is 50% full" what can I do to either lower the amount of data on this partition or raise the threshold limits to to stop this message? I would prefer to learn how to lower the amount of data on this disk to bring under my disk quota of 50% in order to stop these emails being produced by the cron job running on this server.

Is there anything special about a home directory before users' home directories are stored there, or is just as typical as any other "empty" folder?Let me just cut to the chase, but please no ear ringing about the folly of messing around as root, particularly with directories at root level. I know it's considered stupidity, but I deleted my home directory.
Is there an easy way to restore a working home directory? I tried copying /etc/skel under root, but I'm not sure what a home directory should look like once it has been restored. Besides . & .., there were .screenrc & .xsession in my home directory when I copied /etc/skel. Are these files suppose to be in "/home" or "/home/~" or both?

Below you'll see that my home server is currently maxed with something hidden.I noticed that my machine was maxed so i ran a du on / to see where the issue was happening. I freed up 6gbs so far and ~ciaranw keeps eating up any free disk space. But when i look to see what in the folder could be doing this, i get nothing back that accounts for the currently 19gbs thereI've been a long time user of forums but never found the need to actually post seeing as my problem was usually covered, this problem has stumped my googling prowess

Quick searches did not bring forth any standard solution.
I have installed Ubuntu Server 10 (x64) using LVM with two disks (this is a Virtual Machine on VMWare ESXi4)
During install I selected only disk 1, and LVM guided Installation Added LAMP and SSH
Server gives only a text mode configuration, great if you are a linux guru, but I am not so it took a bit to find a stripped down GUI. None could be found but I did the following:
apt-get install xorg gdm gnome-core (minimal Gnome install)
apt-get install gnome-system-tools (users and *****s, time)
apt-get install gnome-network-admin (network config)
apt-get install update-notifier (updates)
[Code].....
I have created a similar system with Ubuntu, now I wish to move the var/www directory to sda1, and the databases from MySQL.

Trying to set up a backup for mySQL databases in CRON.
I've entered the following line in /etc/crontab:
Code:
7 13 * * * root mysqldump -u root -pMYPASSWORD --all-databases | gzip > /home/myuser/mysql_backups/database_`date '+%Y-%m-%d'`.sql.gz
grep CRON /var/log/syslog shows:
[Code].....
If I run the command outside of CRON, it creates the backups no problem, but CRON is not doing anything.

I have a laptop and a desktop PC, both running Ubuntu 10.04 and both are configured the same way. I am using Unison-gtk to sync the data between both computers... This works for everything... except for my mysql databases. Any way to simply sync my mysql databases on both computers. Right now I need to do this table-per-table... and it is quite long to proceed like this. What I need is a script or a program (open and preferably free) that would just compare both databases (all the tables) and sync them either by updating existing tables or by creating them. This should work both ways... obviously. I could write a script for this, but I am sure there already is something for this out there.

if I use mysql in terminal, and use show databases; I can see the 7 databases that I have.
I aslo cannot access to any field using GUI tools (cannot acces to database permissions, or MySQL Server Configuration, host permissions or MySQL system variables). The error is:
DBI connect failed : Access denied for user ''@'localhost' to database 'mysql'
Do you know how to restore the view/access to databases?

Was installing wine 1.2.2 on ubuntu 10.10 my home folder had 60GB of free space before the installation started I chose to install manually. I installed all the dependencies manually from terminal. Then compiled wine 1.2.2 from the source code using ./configue make While running the 'make' process my 60GB home folder ran out of disk space. The make process was non ending. Ultimately it got aborted due to lack of space. Can't retrieve disk space that was lost since then. Tried with terminal commands like
apt-get clean
apt-get autoclean
apt-get autoremove
Even tried to get into the wine source folder from terminal and use 'make uninstall' Nothing works and I now have only 50Mb of disk space on my home folder

How do I restore MySQL Databases from an old hdd with Ubuntu on it which won't boot? Information below is not necessary just explaining how I ended up in this situation. Today the harddrive crashed on one of my development servers and I have no recent backup of the MySQL databases on the server.
The stuff on the server weren't horrible important but it would still be nice if I were able to recover some of the files. This is the thing, I don't think the harddrive is entirely dead because it comes to a screen saying harddrive error something enter to continue then it says GRUB in the upper left corner before the computer crashes/reboots.
So I installed Ubuntu server on a new HDD and now I want to attempt to recover the databases from the old HDD by mounting it in Ubuntu but before trying I would like to know who one does that. As I've understood it's a bit more complicated then one might thing because MySQL uses binaries and not plain-files.

I've spent ages trying to build this and had a good look around for a way to do it. I have a directory tree which contains a set of folders and files. Some of the folders contain more than one file but most contain only a single one. I'm trying to move all of the files which are on their own in directories one level below the root into the root. E.g:
Root is: /volume3
Single file in a sub folder: /volume3/20110103/20110103.log
File should end up as: /volume3/20110103.log
I know how to flatten the entire structure fairly easily but its the conditional part which I can't figure out how to do.

Rebooted my server after some funky stuff started happening with mysql. Turns out the drive that stores the mysql databases has gone missing. I did an fdisk, and the partition table is gone. I used gpart to see if there were any partitions available & there were -- two + one swap. Can you help me put this back together I know very little about reconstructing a table to use... Here is the output of what I've talked about...

I know very little about MySQL, but I've got some users that need it for testing on a Linux server. So I had set it up a while back, but now I'm running into some small problems.Right now, each user has his own database that I created and can do whatever with it. Each user only sees their own database.I didn't want them to be able to create new databases at all, but they can and when they do anyone can see them.
EDIT(Apparently they can only create databases beginning with the word "test" in the name)
I need to either:
1) Stop them from creating new databases (without affecting their ability to interact with the existing database)
OR
2) Make it so that when they create a database, only they have privileges on it and only they can see it (except mysql root of course).
Anybody know the statement to set these kinds privileges up?
EDIT: pfft... I've a read a bit more and realize that this is an intended part of the installation.
EDIT2
I'd still like to remove the ability to make test databases.
EDIT3:Ok, for reference this is how you prevent users from making and using test databases:
shell> mysql -u root -p
Enter password: (enter root password here)
mysql> DELETE FROM mysql.db WHERE Db LIKE 'test%';
mysql> FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
