Fedora Installation :: Upgrading With Netinst CD "Unable To Read Package Metadata..."

Dec 20, 2009

I downloaded Fedora-12-x86_64-netinst.iso, burned a CD and booted it to upgrade my Fedora 11 system. It seemed to be working at first, but after it made a network connection and spun for a while, it displayed an error message which I scrawled down with a pen that looked something like this:

Debian Installation :: Daily Netinst Iso Can't Be Read For Boot On Virtualbox

Sep 17, 2010

I am trying to build a test VM with VirtualBox 3.2.8, hosted on Ubuntu 10.04 amd64. I am trying to install Debian Squeeze from the daily build (specifically, from the following URL):

[URL]

(I've also tried the netinst ISO in the same directory.) The sha1sums are correct for each image.

When I start the VM, it refuses to boot, giving me the message "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted."

I would like to note that I've used VirtualBox for several years now, and GNU/Linux since 1995. So I have some experience in the field. (Of course experience is not much guard against brown-bag mistakes.) I've tried this same VM with an Ubuntu ISO (simply switching the attached ISO in the config), and it boots and installs OK.

Is there a known problem with the daily builds vs. VirtualBox?

Debian Installation :: Upgrading One Particular Package From Jessie To Stretch

Jan 8, 2016

I have installed Package: gnumeric (1.12.18-2) in my Jessie/Mate system. It is very jittery on scrolling, and I was wondering if I should upgrade to the version (1.12.26-1) in stretch(testing), as there seem to have been a large number of bugfixes.

I have tried the following simulation command, but it gives the error message shown:

Code: Select all~# apt-get --simulate -t stretch  install gnumeric
Reading package lists... Done
E: The value 'stretch' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources

The documentation suggests that I may need to create an apt preferences file. I do not have any of the following files mentioned by the apt-get man page:

/etc/apt/preferences/etc/apt/preferences.d/etc/apt/apt.conf

What I would like to do is upgrade just the specific package jessie/gnumeric(1.12.18-2) to stretch/gnumeric(1.12.26-1). I do not want any other packages to be inadvertently upgraded to stretch. I have seen warnings that one can easily end up with a badly mixed system and I wish to avoid that! I also do not want to disturb the standard apt-get update, which I am running daily via anacron at present.

I got this error message when installing Fedora 11 by an installlation DVD (download from [URL]) Unable to read group information from repositories. This error message appeared after the step that the installer asked me to choose where to install boot loader and configure the GRUB boot menu. Fedora Installation :: Can't Retrieve Installer Metadata -- Internet Install CD?

Jun 13, 2009

I know that there have been a lot of messages (with repo correction info posted) for yum updates after install; but I'm trying to do an internet install of F11 and I'm getting the same message. Obviously I can't change a yum.conf file for this -- but it does give one the option to edit the location.

The default location is: [URL].. There's one other big flaw with the internet install -- it writes HD partition changes to the disk right after you set up the partition scheme; shouldn't it wait until it knows it can connect to the repository?? I had to boot to a Ubuntu live dvd to get on here to post this. I'm definitely not saving time using the internet install option.

I got online last night and found some of the info. on the yum updates issue, with different mirrors or repositores. So what I tried changing for the default repo / metadata location, using the edit option is:

I changed the word metalink to mirrorlist. I changed https to http. I tried using http://mirror.liberty.edu/pub (etc) which is actually an rpm fusion mirror. I likewise tried http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu (etc.) I gave up and went to bed, and this morning I just tried the http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/$releasever/Everything/$basearch/os/ (and I also tried the above redhat.com address substituting i386 for basearch and 11 for $releasever) -- no go with any of that. Same error message about cannot retrieve installer metadata.

All of the other messages I've seen on this issue have been about Yum updates; not installs. Hopefully the install DVD will show up in the next couple of hours; but I'd like to make this work if I can ??

Feb 15, 2010

I've just upgraded my server installation from 9.04 to 9.10. I'm running this as a Xen virtual machine. All seemed to go well until I restarted, at which point I got stuck at this point:

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot In Windows 2K3 After Upgrading To 10.4?

I am new to Ubuntu. I recently upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.4 (64bit) since then I am unable to dual boot to WIN2K3 from the same HDD as my Ubuntu. I have ran some of the suggestions like: Sudo update grub and Testdisk both did not provide any errors on my partitions and my primary partition displayed in Testdisk was WIN2K3, now when I reboot and select it from the boot menu it just simply show a blinking cursor.

I am out of ideas and I need a solution to suit my configuration. I prefer not to re-install or repair any WIN2K3 OS. Can someone assist and let me know what you need from me to further understand my issue.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot Into Windows After Upgrading Grub

Apr 10, 2010

I upgraded from grub to grub2 recently, and during an update of my system, it ran the update-grub command which prompted a window asking me where to install Grub. Since I didn't know what partition to install it to and the help suggested to install it to all if I was unsure what partition to install it to - I accidentally installed Grub to my Windows partitions (both the regular and the recovery console).

So now, I can't boot into Windows - the computer just hangs after Grub with a blinking cursor and I have to perform a hard reset. Is there any way for me to restore the boot record for the windows partition without having to reinstall windows from the ground up?! I can't use Linux for my webbanking and other important tasks, so (unfortunately) I need Windows back desperately!

Debian Installation :: Netinst: Make Boot CD From Iso?

I tried burning the iso directly to a disk. i set up the boot order in my BIOS but when I restart the machine it spins the CD drive a few times and then moves on to the hard drive.

I tried expanding the iso into a directory, and then copying all those files into into the "Blank CD-R Disc" on my Gnome Desktop, burnt the CD, and still no boot.

I found some instructions using X3b, but X3b was giving me errors.

Fedora :: Unable To Activate Nvidia-173xx Driver After Upgrading To 14?

Dec 4, 2010

I was running Fedora 13 on my old computer with a nvidia Geforce FX 5200 graphics card using the nvidia-173xx driver from fusion. After upgrading to Fedora 14 (the first day of its release) the X server wasn't working anymore, the screen just froze up after the progress bar. With Alt+F4 I "moved" to text mode and gave the startx command, but I got the fatal error message that there was no usable configuration detected. I deleted the xorg.conf file and afterwards I was able to start X again. I use the nouveau driver now, but it doesn't nearly work as good as the nvidia-173xx driver. I have it installed, but when I try to activate it (by running nvidia-xconfig as root) the X server doesn't work again after restart, and I have to do the same thing all over again.

I cannot follow these instructions [URL] .... because "auto" and "iface" commands not found.

iptables isn't installed, but I want to install nftables since it's what iproute2 is to net-tools.

And it doesn't even have NetworkManager either and so far I found out ifconfig (net-tools) has been dropped in favor of iproute2, although that is just what Wikipedia says.

"apt-cache search iproute2" revealed there is only iproute.

I just checked, net-tools is also installed, but ifconfig command not found?
