Fedora :: Yum Update Offer Unneeded Package Only?
Apr 12, 2010
Now, every time I do yum update my system will also offer me package for F12, F13, F14. But if I try to install it, it will not resolve because I my system is still F11. I don't remember exactly what the error message is, but I think it said that I should have system > 13 to install that packages. What should I do so next time I do yum update I just offered packages I needed only?

I've been running 8.04 for a long time w/o problems. However, videos tended to hangup, as if waiting for more data. I have a Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS graphics card, so I attempted to load the latest driver. That landed me in Low Graphics Hell, where I couldn't change the resolution (even when a better one was offered) because I couldn't get to the bottom of the screen to get to 'Apply.' I had down loaded 10.04 and burned a couple of CDs, and I attempted to upgrade. But neither the Update Manager or CD worked because I couldn't get far enough down the update screen. After a long struggle, I have a reasonable resolution, with the Nividia x server running.
Now, when I try to up date, 10.04 is no longer offered to me, either by the Update Manager or the CD. Apparently, I've used up all of my chances to upgrade. What now?

I've been installing and uninstalling some stuff, and I would like to know if there was a way to see if I have yet to uninstall some unneeded packages. There was a way of doing this on Ubuntu via the Computer Janitor. Is there any way of doing that on Fedora 12?

I am trying to design an application which violates the DHCP. Specifically the difficulty in writing this application is physically sending the raw packet. I need some documentation on either a library that supports this or where to look for support for raw packet creation. I am not trying to create a raw datagram, that doesn't meet my needs because a raw datagram is still at layer 3 I need to craft a raw layer 2 PDU.
Specifically I want to
Send a very specific DHCPDISCOVER
Receive a DHCPOFFER
and pull apart the offer while never sending a DHCPREQUEST.
Specifically I am pulling apart various options that are sent in the DHCPOFFER. I have a raw DHCPDISCOVER already crafted and the formatted struct sockaddr_ll where I fault is I can't send the damn thing. Getting the file descriptor after calling socket is okay but what now? How would I write to that file descriptor and have it transmit?
Code:
int connfd;
struct sockaddr_ll bcast;
bcast.sll_family = PF_PACKET;
...
connfd = socket(PF_PACKET,SOCK_RAW,0);
//now what

On my Fedora 11 x86_64 computer I have installed OOo 3.1.1 from www.openoffice.org because I need features that Fedora disabled in the repository version.And the latter also shows up in Software Update. Now, I went around and around with this and I know that installing the 1.3.1.1 package will break my OOo. I don't want Software Update even to list the 1.3.1.1 package because sooner or later I will slip up and install it on accident.
Side note: Why does Software Update think 1.3.1.1 is newer than 1.5.1? If it really is newer, someone at OOo needs to learn arithmetic.I think I can add an exclude line to /etc/yum.conf. But I can't figure out the syntax, and I don't know which package to exclude - the one I don't want updated or the alleged update package? Both? Or just the first part "openoffice.org-ure"?

the sendmail packages on my f15 server were updated from 8.14.4-20 to 8.14.5-1 yesterday. since then, every attempt to send mail via a smart relay have failed with :

i've tried using various different smtp relays and they all now throw the same error. without going through all my sendmail config, i have the following entries in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc :
define(`SMART_HOST', `{smtp server}')dnl
FEATURE(`authinfo', `hash /etc/mail/authinfo')dnl
and the /etc/mail/authinfo file contains :

I need to get the libstdc++.so.5 library ( on a computer with Fedora 8 and don't wonder why it's so ancient,-there is a good reason for it) but I don't have Internet access from that computer, so I can't get to the online repo's.
However, I do still have the installation disk, and I'm typing this from a computer (SuSE 10) that is half a meter from the Fedora box.
I tried the "ADD/REMOVE Software" option on the menu, but it keeps on looking for the online repo and then if it doesn't get it, it fails.
Is it possible to get this library from the installation disk. How? Could I download the single package from the online repo onto the SuSE machine and then move it to the Fedora machine? How do I then tell the Fedora machine to "incorporate" it.

I have a fedora 11 with kernel package: kernel-PAE-2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.i686
I would like to install the devel package for this kernel version, but I can't find it, because in the fedora repo there is only the original kernel (2.6.29.4....) and in the updates repo there is only the newest kernel package (2.6.30....)
Where can I find the packages which are between the fedora and update repos' versions?

Not long ago I've switched from FreeBSD to Debian. As time passes, I install some packets, use them and forget to uninstall them. In FreeBSD there was a simple (dummy) way to keep only needed packets. Once in 6 months i just deleted all packages (pkg_delete -a) and then installed only those which i needed (xfce, xmms, gmplayer, etc). Is there a way to safely remove packets and their dependencies which i don't use anymore? May be there is a way to roll back to default desktop package collection?

I am fairly new to RPM based distributions. I installed using the OpenSUSE 64-bit Gnome live CD. I used the one click installer to enable the Nvidia drivers. Doing so caused the system to want to install about 700mb of packages. I am assuming these are "recommended" packages that normally would be on the DVD with Gnome. There is no graphical way to "not" install them (other than using the QT interface, which I do not want) that I could find from the Gnome software installer, other than to perhaps uncheck them one by one.
I installed Nvidia drivers without such issues by using the "zypper in" command. I would like to use the Gnome interface without having to install all these files along with any package changes. Is there a way to do so? My second question is related. When running a default upgrade, packages such as foreign locales and translations and the yast qt interface want to install which is making the download take a long time. I only need English. Is there an easy way to disable these from installing?
