I am looking for a command line utility like ping that can use for checking appropriate services on a server . I do not want do any port scan . I just want to use it for checking apache , mail,ftp and other services on a server if they are running or down.

To check for the different types of services/ports, we just replace the [service] in check_[service] with the name of the port? I only know of check_http, check_ssh, check_ftp etc. Some ports like Finger, snmp etc, all these we also write it as 'check_finger', 'check_snmp'? 2) And, if that is the case, do we have to install additional plugins to monitor the ports defined earlier? 3) Lastly, if i want to monitor finger,snmp in windows server, would i need to download any software?

But if I gave ping -I eth1 <IP> then I can ping.
I cannot install any package, so tell me solution which includes not installing any package.

My question is about checking remote services under Nagios. I have installed nrpe and the standard plugins on my Nagios server (RHEL 5.4) and the systems I want to monitor. I have been able to create hostgroups. I am somewhat confused as to how to add a new service. I want to check to see if tomcat is running on the remote servers. I found a plugin check_procs. If I run the following command on one of the remotes it works.

It doesn't work. I'm not sure how to format the service.I've found gobs of documentation on how to setup and install Nagios, done. I've not been so lucky on how to setup a new service.

I run the ping command using system() in C. It start pinging the desired destination but when I close my application it continues to ping. Is there any solution that as soon as I close my application it also stops pinging. Any change required in my C code?

Up until now I have been doing all my development within the Ubuntu environment but unfortunately, I don't like it. I want to move back to Windows, which is much more familiar to me but I would still like to access the virtual box like a virtual server as it is already set up with Apache, PHP, Pear, Git etc...
How can I make the two work in harmony? I essentially want to be able to start the VM and connect to it as if it was a server machine somewhere on my network, without having to actually buy another machine to put on my network.

View 5 Replies View RelatedSo, I have an Virtual Machine running CentOS 5.4. It sits behind a hardware firewall which also does NAT'ing. I've set up plenty of these, so I know for sure the firewall and NAT rules are set up correctly. From the host, I can ping anything in my subnet and the gateway. But I can't ping anything else beyond the gateway. I can perform DNS queries and when I try to ping, it finds the appropriate IP address.But from the outside, I can ping the PUBLIC address (It's a 1 public to 1 private address NAT, not 1 public to multiple private). I've tried it with IPTABLES on and off, with no change.

But there are a lot of constraints with the mail service with regards to the number of mail boxes, size per box, relays per user and so on.To avoid this, we are looking at other options. One is to have our own mail server but it will require a lot of infrastructure and expertise. But Amazon web services looks nice. They have infrastructure needed and all. One thing on my mind is the reverse look up of the mail servers. They wont be associated with the domain as both would be on different hostings. I am open to both windows exchange server as well as Linux server. Has anyone done this before or has any idea about it? I have gone through some of the threads in their forum and there are a lot of mixed views about it.And main concern everyone views is the reverse lookup. This could lead to all the mails sent from my server tagged as spam at the recipient end.I could not make out in which forum to write and hence in newbie. If this is enough about networking or server please move it.

In Terminal you have to type most of the name before it will complete for you, otherwise it just displays a list of names. Are you supposed to read from there and copy filenames? And the upper/lower case stuff is really ugly. Is there a smart command line utility that can build the entire path for you, and recall history based on a partial string?

Now only can do this manually; when gdm starts, switch to any text tty [ie. Ctrl + Alt + F1], then I login into the special user, start a X server, export the DISPLAY environment variable, and start the application.

Now i need put this steps (script) in some place to launch the app automatically, and with and specific user [ie. manager].
How can I made it? Maybe in init.d? or an special xinitrc? And how can start the app with the specific user? And, if is possible, who can stop the app when the system going turn off? I have Debian 5.0 and a beginner knowledge of shell script.
In my server the iptables and ip6tables services are not running. But still i am getting some iptables and ip6tables related alerts on my /var/log/messages. My technical leader told me that there might be some mis-configuration in iptables configuration file. But i didnt see anything wrong.

I have configured bonding on 64 bit centos 5.4 I have to put the machine to a different VLAN for that i did the Ip change and restated the network. but i cant ping the gateway or any other server in that network. the cofig files are as follows
