Well, here are a list of the symptoms.
In add/remove software:
- No packages appear
- Sources pane is blank
Trying "yum update":
Gives the following error.
Code:
There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: libssl.so.8: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly.
It's possible that the above module doesn't match the current version of Python, which is:
Additional info: Last update in log is from march 11. But has nothing to do with yum, ssl or python.

I've been searching for a whole day this package, but yum couldn't find it and even googling it I can only find debian packages for that. Does anyone know how to find it in .rpm?I need it for compiling the vpnc client with openssl (still wondering why the ssl certification was excluded in the in-built package) because without it I get errors.

I updated my fedora 12 installation the other day, and have been working since then to try to get my computer back to working order. Here's what's up:
I ran a yum update and restarted the computer. When it booted back up I couldn't see anything but a black screen where there should've been a login screen. I can do terminal stuff if I hit ctrl+F2, so keep that in mind. I've determined that the problem is that kmod-nvidia-2.6.32.10-90.fc12.x86_64-195.36.15-1.fc12.1.x86_64 didn't get installed during the update process for some reason. I tried to yum install this file through my terminal access, but it didn't recognize any internet connection (neither wired nor wireless). I've downloaded the kmod-nvidia file to my Windows XP partition, and have also put it on my flash drive. So I need to know one of three things: How to access a Windows partition from terminal, how to access a flash drive from terminal, or how to connect to the internet from terminal so I can get the kmod file.

When I install the most recent Linux Kernel: kernel-2.6.34.6-54.fc13 (i686) The installation process removes: Linux Kernel: kernel-2.6.33.6-147.2.4.fc13 (i686) Plus NVIDIA: kmod-nvidia-2.6.33.6-147.2.4.fc13.i686-1:195.36.31-1.fc13.2 (i686)
This results in Nvidia.ko not being found during the subsequent restart - the remove activity deletes it from the system. Prior to this activity Nvidia.ko is found in: /lib/modules/2.6.33.6-147.2.4.fc13.i696/extra/nvidia. Without Nvidia.ko the display is set to 800x600 resolution. This is the first time I have encountered this problem with a Fedora Linux Kernel update. Will this problem be fixed in a subsequent update, if so when? If not fixed, where do we find the proper Nvidia.ko module? Also, how do you recommend we install it?

I cannot update perl due to a missing dependency.
Installed perl:
[kbs1@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep perl-5
perl-libwww-perl-5.834-1.fc13.noarch
perl-5.10.1-112.fc13.i686
perl-5.10.1-112.fc13.x86_64
[Code].....
downgrade also does not work. I just updated F12 to F13 using DVD and this occured. Also prevents me from doing "full" yum system update, these packages always fail. I do not understand the problem, it says that perl-libs 5.10.1-112 requires perl-libs 5.10.1-112, but I have that installed.

Yesterday I ran updates that moved me from kernel Fedora (2.6.34.7-61.fc13.i686.PAE) to Fedora (2.6.34.7-63.fc13.i686.PAE). After reboot my system hangs trying to start X. I can use altF2 and log in that way but when I try to start X it fails - no screen found. I backed off to my previous kernel and used the package manager to remove the updated kernel and noticed that when it uninstalled it did not take any kmod packages with it. I assume not having an associated kmod may have been the problem? If so, how do I find the correct one to install?
relevant info:
Fedora 13 32 bit PAE (KDE spin)
video card - nvidia 460gtx
video driver - nvidia 260.19.21

After login again, i couldn't find any of my files or folders. The hidden files & folders are remain there but rest all were gone. Now my account looks like newly created one. All of my important documents are missing.

I have just got rid of Ubuntu in favor of Fedora, after more than ten years using Debian and Ubuntu. Most differences are pretty minimal but one big difference I haven't been able to master yet is the realm of rpm and yum. My kernel is 2.6.40-4.fc15.x86_64. Today, when running yum update I was greeted with a number of errors.
Output of yum check:
Code:

I have also attached the output of yum update, which I believe is more verbose on the sources, etc.
I'm afraid that if I just start forcing removal of packages I'll render my system useless.

I just installed the latest compiz as per leigh's instructions - nice, easy install!I notice that the snow application is missing. That was my favorite, but where has it gone??
How about floating windows above desktop cube? Dodge? In which upon selecting a window, the non-selected windows move around it to move it to the front.I also notice that many window updates are very poor. For example, in the compiz settings manager when I switch tabs, the window does not actually update unless I move it. I click on a tab and it looks just like the previous tab. If I move the mouse around, it will update the wind in blocks under the mouse, but not the whole window. And, it would appear that the standard compiz is still available from my desktop settings in KDE. Could I have failed to remove the original compiz?

after yesterday's update to kernel 2.6.35.10-72 my grub.conf didn't get updated and ll /boot shows that neither vmlinuz or initramfs exist for that kernel. uname -r though tells me I'm running 2.6.35.10-72.
How can I do that? and on another more reallystic matter how can I generate the missing files so I can manually update grub.conf?

I am working on Ubuntu 7.10 and I want to install libssl-dev_0.9.8a-7ubuntu0.13_i386.deb. So tried it with apt-get command but getting the following error--
root@user-desktop:/# apt-get install libssl
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libssl is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source
E: Package libssl has no installation candidate
Then I downloaded .deb file and attempt to install it with package installer but again unable to install it and getting the error--
Error: Dependency is Not Satisfiable: libssl0.9.8
In Synaptic, libssl0.9.8 is installed on my system. I tried reinstalling it and that didn't make a difference.

Last night I let the automatic updating of packages ran on my Fedora 10 installation. It has been a few months since I ran the updating and so it took quite long. I did not monitor it closely so I am not sure which packages were updated. After the update was completed, when I restarted my computer it halted during the boot up process at the point when it was trying to mount the root file system. The error message is "mount: missing mount point".
I booted the computer using the F10 DVD and used the rescue mode to look into the /boot directory. The kernel that was booting by default was 2.6.27.25-170.2.72.fc10.x86_64.There were two older F10 kernels in /boot and so I tried booting with them. The boot process went further but I was still not able to boot up F10 successfully. There were many error messages about not being able to touch files in /var/lock/subsys as it is a read-only file system.

Hi,
today I've compiled and installed gtk+-2.24.4 (needed by the new GIMP), and shortly after GTK apps look like crap. The theme list is empty except for "Raleigh", which I presume is default.
What can be the cause and what config files should I look into to fix it?
Running openSUSE 11.4 with LXDE / openbox.
Thanks in advance.
