Im running fedora 11. I pressed the desktop effects button yesterday, and it suddenly changed my resolution to 800x600 when it was previously a lot higher. I couldn't fix it, so i reinstalled fedora 11. Couldn't fix it. Reinstalled Windows XP, then reinstalled fedora 11, and it fixed. Now, 12 hours on, it has gone back to 800x600. How can i fix this?!
View 4 RepliesI recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 in my computer, I ran update manager and installed all the actualization but and I can not set the screen resolution higher than 800x600; I have windows XP installed in another partition and the screen resolution can get to 1028x1024 at 85 hz. I have a Pentium 4, 2.20 ghz, 1gb ram, and the video card is a SiS (Silicone Integrated Systems) 300/305/630/540/730 32 Mb.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is my first posting as a Linux Newbie. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 inside of a MS Virtual PC on my Vista machine. Everything seems to work beautifully and is stable. However, I would like to use a resolution higher than the current maximum of 800x600. I've poked around on the web and have tried various tips. I tried using the xrandr options which added a higher resolution mode, but when I would try to set the output to that resolution, I would get an error message to the effect that I could not exceed the current maximum of 800x600.
I tried to cobble parameter values together and create an xorg.conf file, but every iteration seems to produce a bunch of colorful vertical bars within my Virtual PC window, and I would have to blow away that virtual PC setup and rebuild it (along with reinstalling Ubuntu). As I said, 800x600 is not a show stopper, but I would like to take advantage of the real estate I have with my display. These "fifty-five year old" eyes could benefit from the larger size. FYI, I did take a stab at installing Virtual Box, but got the infamous "blue screen", so I would rather stick with what appears to be a stable virtual PC base.
In my laptop i have an ATI radeon HD 3200 , I installed Fedora 10 and also the fglrx driver I have 3d acceleration and works well. The problem is that the display makes a weird sound when i use a resolution higher than 800x600, and the display appears like "Unknown". The Display is a : 14" HD Acer CineCrystal LED LCD.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 as a virtual machine under my Win7 windows. Everything is OK except that I can not get resolution higher than 800*600. Actually there are two options in Display Settings Menu 800*600 and 640*480. But my laptop has 15.4 inch monitor so its normal resolution is 1280*800.
View 3 Replies View RelatedOkay, so here is the deal I have been using Ubuntu for awhile as a network monitoring system and have now changed it to being my main system and was wondering why when my machine is hooked up to my HDTV via a VGA port on the back of VIZIO television, I am only getting a max resolution of 800x600? If anyone can help me with this problem it would be awesome.Any additional information needed please include you terminal commands because I am still just so terrible with those.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using ubuntu 10.04 version. I've recently purchased a BenQ E2200HD monitor. However, the monitor is unable to configure a resolution higher than 800x600. I've tried changing it via 'preferences' - 'monitor' etc. The monitor model is 'unknown'. and the highest resolution available is the 800x600.
I've tried changing it manually, but it says x.cong file does not exist. Xrandr doesnt seem to work either. Or i would get CTRC 262. My current set up is, intel i5 2600, 4GB Ram, Nvidia GTS 240. I'm pretty certain, my graphics card (despite being in the low end) can support HD resolution. Even if it can't, it surely can support a resolution higher than 800x600.
i recently installed fedora 11 i386 from fedora 8 i386. it was a fresh install. with 8 i had a 1024x768 res and my monitor is a 15.4" Polaroid LCD tv that has a max res of 1280x800. when i goto display and try to change the res it only shows 800x600 and below.

I've recently been messing with installing Fedora 14 an older computer I have and I've hit a snag. While everything else seems to be just honky dory, I cant get the screen resolution to go higher than 848x480. I know that the screen I'm using supports at least 1024x768 (possibly higher, i don't know) as another computer I have will display at that on it with no problem.
I've spent literally hours mucking about with xrandr, and xorg.conf (had to create it cause it didn't exist)As an addendum: the GUI monitor preferences screen says "Unknown" for the monitor I'm using, where as the xorg.conf file i created accurately detects it as Vendor "NEC" ModelName "PX-50VP" That's not really a big deal though, just a minor quirk I would think.
I have fedora 12 and I tried to change the screen resolution under the system menu to a higher one and it changed but now I dont have any menus and I'm not sure if I can use quick keys to go back to the display preferences to reset the screen resolution. Is there anyway I could run the display preferences by running a command in the bash shell or is there a quick key that allows menu access.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu for about two years now, then suddenly today (after my PC accidently lost power) the screen resolution changed to 800x600 (it is, in fact, a widescreen monitor, and this resolution looked 'zoomed in'). The only two resolutions detected with xrandr were in the 4:3 ratio (800x600 and something worse). I followed some instructions, trying to reset the resolution to 1024x576.
I got as far as
$ xrandr --newmode "1024x576" ...
then,
$xrandr --addmode default 1024x576
but when I
$xrandr --output default --mode 1024x576
I a message to the effect of 'your screen can only support 800x600 or less'. Ah-ha, I thought, you stupid machine; this screen has had a greater resolution for over a year.
And so, from System->Preferences->Monitor, I forced the computer to switch to this new resolution. When prompted, I reset.
My current problem is that when I turn the computer on, the monitor displays a floating 'Input Not Supported' sign. I Ctrl+Alt+F1'd, and now all 'xrandr' and 'cvt' commands return:

My first priority is to get the computer back to it's less-broken 800x600 state;

After the latest kernel update (2.6.32-26), my computer will no longer start up with a screen resolution higher than 800x600. Before this update, my computer would sometimes startup with this problem, but this could usually be fixed with a restart (or two if necessary). At this resolution the panels and a lot of tool-bars will not display properly, so I am limited as to what I can do using the GUI.
my video card is an S3 unichrome (I think. It is built-in to the motherboard so I don't know for certain) my screen is an old ctr one I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on the 2.6.32-26 kernel

I have a good Asus monitor in which I can have a resolution of 1280x800 when using Mac Os (I have a Power Mac G4). However, when I try to have a better resolution with Ubuntu, the only resolution that it lets me choose is 800x600! There are no choices. I tried the "detect display" button but it doesn't change anything.

I am using HP Mini 1000 Series with Ubuntu 10.10 (later installed with xubuntu-desktop). I want to run a wine application which requires 800x600 resolution. However, my current resolution is 1024x576. The other available solution is 640x480. Previously, I used pre-installed Windows XP, it allows me to change the resolution to 800x600 by clicking the "List All Modes" button at the display setting, then I can choose the 800x600 resolution. So, I think HP Mini is also able to support 800x600 screen resolution. May I know how can I do it in Ubuntu?

My screen resolution has defaulted to 800x600, but it should be 1024x600. tried xrandr, and editing the xorg.conf file, and now have gone down the rabbit hole of trying to install xf86-video-intel and its associated dependencies (nested like Russian matryoshka dolls). I am having a major problem in a new Karmic install. Big rationalisation. Kicked out a lot of machines in favour of Virtual machines. Installed Karmic. Machine has dual 22" wide screen monitors, max res 1680 x 1050. Karmic installed at maximum 800 x 600 and will not go above that. I have looked for xorg.conf and cannot find one anywhere. I have tried the randr as shown by Sharaq but when I try to set the higher resolution it gives message saying maximum size is 800 x 600. I have downloaded the proprietory drivers from Radeon and tried to run them. The installer runs but I cannot get to the 'Continue' button because it is off the bottom of my screen so I cannot set up the drivers. I suspect I am going to have the same problem with the Lucid install I did yesterday. Earlier releases never gave me this issue so why now?
Why is the initial resolution so low?
I have been on Ubuntu for a total of about 1 hour now, as I have finally made the switch from Windows. So far so good, but I do have some learning to do. First off, when I got Ubuntu 10.04 installed, everything worked great! Video lagged a little however. No biggy. The next time I booted up, it asked if I wanted to install video card drivers. I thought this is why my video was lagging, so I said yes. It then automatically installed my nvidia card drivers.
Then when I rebooted, I was greeted with a 640x480 screen resolution. When I go to System->Preferences->Monitors, I am given a warning that says: "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics drivers vendor's tool instead?"
Regardless if I hit "yes" or "no" I am brought to windows that should allow me to change resolutions. However, the only resolutions I can choose are 640x480 and 320x240. I know my "monitor" can support higher resolutions as I was running it at higher resolutions before the switch to Ubuntu. (I put monitor in quotes, as I am using a large rear projection T.V. as my monitor). How I can get a higher resolution?
