There were many programs automatically installed with the xubuntu-desktop.After trying the xubuntu desktop, I didn't like it and removed it from synaptic package manager but it didn't remove the programs which were automatically installed with it.Is there any way to remove those programs without having to remove them one by one?

Feb 13, 2011I've switched from Ubuntu Hardy to Xubuntu using the terminal. The only problem is I can't find my WinXP partition any more. In Ubuntu I used to mount it by going to 'Places' menu and clicking the folder icon. It's now gone. I can't see the icon in Xubuntu.Been reading other threads trying to find out what to do, but I'm relatively new to Linux. I can't find the folder under /media either. Also, I don't know what types my partitions are. Is this important? I figured I could access my Win folder in Xubuntu the way I would in Ubuntu.

Jun 1, 2010I've recently come back to Linux after several years away. I've been just sort of preoccupied with many other things. I have set-up an Xubuntu desktop on a 1.8 GHz P4 box with a 60 GB HDD and 500 Mb RAM. It took quite some time with research and playing to finally get it set-up the way I want it - samba, file shares, vncserver, and printing. I decided to try to get a handle on disk and partition imaging and cloning for backup purposes and I've made some fair progress, but I've run into something I can't understand and don't know where to go from here with it.
I used Parted Magic 4.10 on a Live CD to shrink the EXT3 partition on the 60 GB drive to a 10 GB partition. I verified that this worked successfully with df -h in a terminal window. Next, I copied disk (60 GB HDD) to disk (13 GB HDD) with EASEUS Disk Copy 2.3 via a USB connection. To test the copy, I removed the 60 GB HDD and replaced it with the 13 GB HDD. It booted normally into the Xubuntu session and appears to be a perfect copy.I decided to use Parted Magic 4.10 on a Live CD to grow the partition to use the entire disk (10 GB ==> 13 GB). When I booted the Live CD Parted Magic shows the 13 GB disk as totally unallocated.
Can someone please explain what has happened and how it's possible for an unallocated partition to boot.
Fedora :: Installed 13 On An 80 Gigabyte Hard Drive - Root Partition Too Large
Jun 10, 2010I recently installed Fedora 13 on an 80 gigabyte hard drive, and it split the space in two, giving root and the normal partition both 36 gigabytes. I need at least 60 gig or more for my home partition. What can I do to shrink the root one? I currently do not have accsess to the install media or a rescue disk.

All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

Nov 17, 2010i installed Xubuntu on my system having a dual boot with Xubuntu and windows xp but when i select to boot on Xubuntu it freezes and gets a message saying that the file hal.dll in system32 cant be found. Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I can boot on windows xp but i cant boot to xubuntu and cant uninstall xubuntu.

Jul 10, 2011I usually use Ubuntu, but installed Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Fedora (xfce). However, none of these three will boot into the desktop! Xubuntu and Fedora-xfce seem to boot, but before it loads the desktop the screen stays black and nothing happends. With Kubuntu, it loads the login screen but every time I try to log in the screen goes black, then it returns to the login screen again. It will just keep doing this until you reboot or shutdown.
I cant see any type of error messages come up and my current install of Ubuntu (11.04) seems unaffected.Does anybody know what is happening here? is it a common bug/problem or something no one has really heard of before? Im just really stumped and cant seem to get anywhere with it,

Feb 21, 2011I have triple boot machine Windows 7 + Ubuntu + Mac OS X in a single HDD.
Windows 7 -- /dev/sda1
Ubuntu 10.10 -- /dev/sda2 (In same Partition grub 2.0)
Mac Snow Leopard -- /dev/sda3
I have installed GRUB 2.0 in same partition where current ubuntu is installed ie /dev/sda2 and basically Windwos Boot manager is installed within MBR.. & I have added GRUB 2.0 and Mac OSX entry into windows boot manger with some freeware from windows 7. So practically when I start my computer First Windows Boot manager comes up and asks me which OS to start first. I set up this type of installation with the thought that when grub 2.0 is not installed within MBR, I can format the whole /dev/sda2 partition without any difficulty and reinstalled any future release distro of ubuntu. So is it practically possible? If I format /dev/sda2 and reinstall new ubuntu release there.. Old grub won't affect the installation of new one.
General :: Partition Lost After Win7 Installed
Jul 28, 2011I have a PC, with 1 HD of 500GB and the following partitions:
Windows XP - NTFS 50 GB
Windows 7 - NTFS 350 GB
Linux Ubuntu - 98 GB
Linux swap - 2GB
The last OS that I have installed was Windows 7, and each time, when I started up my PC, I saw GRUB first, and after choosing the option to load windows, the Windows loader giving me 2 options, one for Windows 7 and one for Windows XP. I didn't like to see first GRUB and after that the windows loader, it was redundant, but everything was working well. One day, I decided to mix the windows 7 and the windows XP partitions (deleting the windows XP and resizing windows 7). I tried to do that with the Windows 7 utility included in the control panel but I couldn't. It said that I couldn't delete the active partition or something like that. It was not possible to delete the partition in which WinXP was stored.
Then, I decided to boot with Ubuntu and use the partitioning tool that comes with it to delete the WinXP partition. It was possible to delete the partition, and I also putted the option "bootable" on the 350GB Windows 7 partition. After that, I rebooted and it was not possible to load windows. Then I tried changing in GRUB the entry for Windows, because I thought if I could put the correct partition to load from, it wouldn't be more problems. I tried several times but I couldn't load windows, so I putted the Windows 7 DVD and I started the installation process, waiting to see an option saying that there was already a system in the partition of 350GB, and allowing me to fix the mbr in that partition.
My surprise was when I choose the partition of 350GB and the installation process began. I was afraid of to lose my data then I decided to reset the computer! And now, all my 350GB disk is gone! I can't see the partition when I enter with Ubuntu. I'm really worried about this, because the computer detects the 350GB partition as empty, and I don't know what to do! I turned off the computer and now I am using another to write this. I have all my files and important information in that partition! and It seems it's lost. I hope it's still possible to restore the partition. Actually I don't care if I have to install again my operating systems but I need my information!

Aug 5, 2011I am completely new to Linux in general, and have recently downloaded Fedora 15 KDE spin. I tried dual-booting between Windows 7 and Fedora by shrinking one of my Windows partitions (I have two, this partition not containing the Windows installation). I tried shrinking it to 30 GB less than the total space available on the partition, and after pressing continue, received an error (which I unfortunately dismissed quickly and can't remember). In the file manager, Fedora showed that my partition changed from 1.3Tb to 1.2 Tb, but I couldn't access it. Upon rebooting into Windows, I still can't access it, receiving a "format drive before use" popup and then error stating that it is possibly of a different filesystem or corrupt.
Unfortunately, I stupidly didn't backup any of my data (which I will be sure to remember to do in the future). I installed EASEUS Partition Master 8.0.1 Home Edition, which states that my drive is still of NTFS filesystem and has the total space it should. However, upon clicking "check drive," it states there are no errors and when trying to "explore files," it doesn't find any (yet it shows the correct amount of used and unused space). I then tried running TestDisk, but only allows me to check my media drive E, which is my dvd drive that has my Fedora Live CD in it (which cannot be ejected manually or through Windows, an error stating it cannot be ejected). I didn't go through with TestDisk for my DVD drive because I needed to verify the type of partition (which to my knowledge shouldn't even exist). It shows 700 something MiB / 600 something MiB. Although I have decent general knowledge about computers, I am a complete novice when it comes to doing something like this.

Apr 17, 2010I installed 10.04 and Grub won't boot into Windows7. I attempted to fix the problem through several different methods and nothing worked and I fear I made the booting problem worse than it was to begin with. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine, just not Windows7. Black screen with a cursor upper left hand. Windows7 repair disk does not help and using Windows7 command line repairs did nothing.
So here is an idea I came up with: Is there any way I can back up the Windows partition exactly the way it is, reinstall Windows7, and then somehow lay down all that information directly over the install to make it exactly like it was?
I doubt it is that simple, but is that possible? Like basically unhiding all the hidden files, copying them into a folder on my Ubuntu installation, reinstalling Windows7 and just copying them all back?

Jul 13, 2010i installed ubuntu 10.04 with wubi on Windows 7. It works perfectly. And, i've only installed 5GB rather that 20GB in my partition (from the wubi option at the first time). I made this partition only for ubuntu but silly me i've installed only 5GB rather than to chose 20GB Now the ubuntu is low on disk space! it' only 120MB left from 5GB. My question is, is there any way expand it to 20GB so the partition is fully for home folder, etc? I want my 15GB!

Mar 8, 2011I just installed ubuntu on a partition on my laptop that already had a windows7 partition. First I had Kubuntu installed, but I decided to just try Ubuntu instead. I did things the right way when I installed Kubuntu and I could switch between OSes on reboot. Then when I installed Ubuntu I accidentally put grub on /dev/sda1 instead of /dev/sda. I didn't even notice for a while because I never felt like I needed to go back to Windows until I felt like playing starcraft 2. That's when I noticed that when the boot options screen appears and I select Windows, the screen goes black, a cursor flashes in the upper left corner for about a second, then the boot options screen reappears.
If I boot using my windows 7 cd and go into recovery, get a command prompt and type Bootrec.exe /FixMbr and Bootrec.exe /FixBoot, the options appear to complete successfully, but then when I reboot, I get a permanent flashing cursor.
If I follow that by inserting my parted magic cd and running testdisk and overwriting the mbr, I get back to the first situation where the boot options screen will appear, but the windows boot loader just returns me to the boot options screen. I can get into ubuntu, at least. Whenever I run testdisk I can't replace the boot with the backup boot because I'm pretty sure it's identical to the flawed one.

Jul 3, 2011I've been serching the forum for hours and every thread related to "GRUB error: no such partition" that i've read relates to fixing the issue for users with windows OS also installed or trying to get windows to boot.
How it happened: I edited partitions and now I get GRUB error: no such partition. I ONLY have Linux installed.
I was able to boot the OS by typing:

General :: Delete The Partition Of The Distro That Installed GRUB
Sep 29, 2009I have two distros and windows installed. I only want one distro (I have decided on Ubuntu) and windows. But, the other distro, the one that I want to eradicate is the last one installed and it is its GRUB in the MBR.
I know what happens from experience if I just delete that partition with a liveCD - GRUB won't boot anything on reboot.
What do I need to do from within Ubuntu or the other Linux before deleting the partition of the second distro so that I have a working GRUB when I reboot ?

Dec 13, 2010I am very new to Linux and trying to setup a Ubuntu server in my Windows 7 PC. that means, I am trying to have a dual boot system. While starting, my PC had 500GB and only one drive C. 18GB of it is used and rest was free.
I have gone thru the following step.
1. Downloaded Ubuntu server on a USB using "Universal USb installer"
2. Booted the PC from the USB and started the Install Ubuntu Server
3. After a few steps the install showed 4 partition options.
I specified the guided partitioning options using free space. (The other options where : Using entire disk, using entire disk with LVM, Manual) Next step it asked me to enter the disk space- it told me it will take at-least 19 GB and maximum available is approx 450GB. My intention was to use the full free space as much as possible. So I specified "max". It told me that it is going to overwrite and create the new partition. Then it progressed fine.
4. I also chosen to install the LAMP stack /Postgress etc.
The installation completed fine When rebooted I logged back in in windows 7. When I opened explorer, I still see that the C drive has around 18GB and 396 GB free space. t seems some of the space has been used by the linux server install. I again started my PC and now I logged in to Ubuntu. I tried command $ df -h . But it is showing the following:

Mar 12, 2011I'm trying to install opensuse 11.4 but I got this error:
"The bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entierly below 128 gb. The system might not boot if BIOS support only lba24(result is error 18 during install grub MBR)"
What should I do before click next step to install? I installed opensuse with this error and some times opensuse can boot and some not. At least I was able to boot safemode.
Ubuntu :: Won't Boot After Installed Gparted And Deleted My Windows Partition
Jan 25, 201010 yr old Dell laptop with NO WORKING DRIVES. i was dual booting xp and xubuntu when i decided it was time to cut the cord. so i installed gparted and deleted my windows partition. now it won't boot. my assumption is that i never installed grub. i got a usb to ide cable so i can access the hard drive from my desktop (xp home edition). i read that grub should be in a folder called "boot". i see on my hard drive that i have: "disks", "winboot" "install", "uninstall-wubi.exe", and "xubuntu.ico". if i expand the "disks" folder, there is a "boot" folder containing another folder called "grub", but the folder is empty. is this where i install it? am i an idiot and missing something stupid? where do i download grub if i need it?
