I am using Ubuntu Maverick and I wanted to try the xubuntu desktop environment, so I installed xubuntu-desktop package from synaptic package manager. There were many programs automatically installed with the xubuntu-desktop.After trying the xubuntu desktop, I didn't like it and removed it from synaptic package manager but it didn't remove the programs which were automatically installed with it.Is there any way to remove those programs without having to remove them one by one?
I've changed the theme in tweak to 'dust and sand' but I don't get the window frames changing. There's a blue surround that didn't change with the theme change. Also I'm assuming the button layout will revert once the window frames do....Like the gnome3 interface better than unity though.
I have strange problem that I couldn't even find on google.
When I play any video in VLC or any other player my video is on top of everything.
For example, if I open a video and play it - everything looks ok. But, if I open another window "above" VLC, video suddenly appears at top and I can't see window opened in front of VLC.
I am running openSUSE 11.1 + KDE 4.2.I wonder where is the desktop button, which minimized all currently opened applications and brings you back to the desktop?
Please could someone let me know how or what do I need to insert to the control panel?
I have just had a wee problem with the XFCE 4 Desktop on my Acer Aspire One with the Fedora 10 OS. Netbook worked OK this AM before work; shut down as usual. On returning from work, the Netbook seemed to boot as normal. But I only had one workspace instead of two (my usual), and when I tried to start Firefox, it was 2/3rds it's normal size and none of the usual '_ [] X' boxes in the the upper right hand corner! I tried booting into an earlier kernel version, but still the same. Had I accidentally altered the settings by any chance? Opened 'Fedora','Settings Manager', and clicked on 'Window manager'. But it just opened an error box, saying 'you do not appear to have a Window Manager'! Went (through google) to the XFCE webpage. The windows manager is called 'xfwm4'. Opened a terminal and tried 'top' - no xfwm4 process seemed to be running. So I quit out of 'top', typed 'xfwm4' and hit enter.
once that you set a desktop wallpaper its the same for all the workspaces. now how to tweak that so that i can set a different wallpaper for every other workspace?
I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and made created a DVD. When I started installing it, I'm not able to do it. I think its hanging. This is what happening: First I found a screen saying 'ubuntu 10.10' and it loaded for some time then I got a screen with a black color task bar at the top of the screen, then after some time it turned into white color and after some time it disappeared. Nothing else happened. I didn't find any pop-up window to start installation of OS..
But when I tried this in my friends house, I found that instead of 'ubuntu 10.10' there came 'Ubuntu' LOGO and it was little bit slow but a pop-up window opened to start installation.. Why its not coming in my PC.. my computer configuration : Windows XP, SP 2 256 MB RAM, 1.81 Ghz AMD 64 Athlon Processor 1800+ I want to shift my OS to Ubuntu completely.
Is it possible to tweak 11.04 to show the old toolbar at the top of the desktop page? If I want to put apps on the desktop how do I do that from the apps page?
i usually use my pendrive in windows vista but when today i tried to open it in ubuntu 9.10 it does not show up. i know that it is mounted because i could see it in the "USB START UP DISC CREATOR" (IN SYSTEM->ADMINISTRATION->USB START UP DISC CREATOR) [See the screen shot. ]. i think since i had never tried to open my Pen drive in ubuntu before and always open it in win vista, that's why this problem is coming up.
There's something very annoying about how Nautilus opens "image viewer" windows. They open, I can see them, but when I press the keyboard, it's still Nautilus which gets the commands. This is because Nautilus stays the active window!
Most annoyingly, when I want to have a quick look at an image, and then close it, Nautilus closes instead (Alt+F4).
Does anyone know what I'm talking about? How to solve it?
I booted the 11.3 live cd (KDE) and it worked great, so I installed openSUSE. After installation my video acted funny - the screen would occasionally blank when I opened a window, moved or resized a window, etc. It's as if the video driver decided to redraw the entire screen.
So I rebooted the live CD to see what was different and noticed this:
So it seems the 3D driver is an issue. Is there a way I can tell SUSE to just use the swrast 3D driver?
I've had Fedora 15 installed on this machine for about three weeks. Today I installed Q-cad for the first time and open it to make sure it would launch. I left the machine for about an hour and when I opened the desktop, I was notified of 879 updates. A quick glance and the updates applied to everything from grub to gimp and lots in between. is it normal to have so many updates dumped to me all at once?
OK so that probably wasn't the best subject line as it was a hard one to describe.
Using Wheezy on an Acer Aspire One 5737 laptop. After a recent update now when I drag an open window around on the desktop it well wobbles in a distorted manner, the same goes when scrolling the page doesn't scroll smoothly it, well, wobbles. I have had the same issue in the past with Lenny on a laptop and I had to install video drivers it fix it however I 'think' Debian now supplies it's own drivers, is this correct? I'm not all that good with the video aspects of Linux. Is there something I need to check or maybe reinstall to correct thsi problem?
I had a friend load Ubuntu on my PC. Everything work pretty well except i cant use the effects like rain, fire, wobbly window or drag my window into another one of my desktop. My comp has Radeon HD3100 Graphics card in it. Is there any graphics drivers I can dl to make the stuff work.
I have 11.04, and installed xubuntu desktop, but now I can't vnc into this machine, I get connection denied. I was able to before with the default desktop. What do I need to do?
I have Ubuntu 11.04 on a laptop. I want to try out Xubuntu, but when I try and download it in synaptic, it says that it would have to get rid of Ubuntu desktop. Is that a bug, or did I do something to make it like that? And is it possible get xubuntu desktop without removing ubuntu desktop?
Ubuntu doesn't load. While booting, it displays an error message saying some of the lists in ipblock couldn't be loaded, followed by a red-coloured "[fail]". Then, the screen goes black and shows nothing more. So, how do I stop ipblock from starting at startup (from the command line)?

I have installed Xubuntu on an old laptop which has a floppy disk.
On the desktop where mounted drives will normally appear, it constantly shows the floppy disk on the desktop even though there is not floppy inside, so I have disabled the desktop from showing mounted drives, however now anything else like a CD or USB drive will not show up on the desktop. Is there a way to choose what types of devices are shown on the desktop?
I have considered disabling the floppy from the BIOS(assuming that is possible), but I would rather not go down that road just yet.
ive just installed Xubuntu Desktop on to my computer, it runs fine, everything loads and so on. but after i log on the bottom 3rd of my screen is completely black
I tried out Xubuntu 10.10 on one of my older computers. Got it installed without a problem. Added the restricted driver module that I needed Nvidia, added the Compiz settings manager, but I cant seem to find a way to enable desktop effects. I realize that Xubuntu uses the XFCE window manger which is sort of light weight compared to Gnome or KDE, so I am asking if anyone has managed to get the desktop effects running in a similar environment. I checked and observed that the nvidia module has been loaded.
I have a computer with xubuntu 9.10 and a pc with kubuntu 9.10, and I need to operate on the xubuntu desktop from kubuntu. On KDE there are Krfb/krdc for the desktop, but what can i install on xubuntu to do this?
