Ubuntu :: Can't Find Windows Partition After Switching To Xubuntu?

Feb 13, 2011

I've switched from Ubuntu Hardy to Xubuntu using the terminal. The only problem is I can't find my WinXP partition any more. In Ubuntu I used to mount it by going to 'Places' menu and clicking the folder icon. It's now gone. I can't see the icon in Xubuntu.Been reading other threads trying to find out what to do, but I'm relatively new to Linux. I can't find the folder under /media either. Also, I don't know what types my partitions are. Is this important? I figured I could access my Win folder in Xubuntu the way I would in Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Tweaks Specific To WINE When Switching From Xubuntu?

May 7, 2011

On my initial move from Ubuntu to Xubuntu my FPS dropped from around 36 to 4.Recommendations from WINE were to make sure I was using proprietary drivers, and that any desktop affects like compiz fusion were disabled. Opening Menu > System > Additional Drivers revealed the following:

Querying this in #xubuntu on Freenode I learned that there is a known bug that drivers will be in use although this applet may report otherwise. On activating the other driver, reactivating the original 'current version', and rebooting, lspci -k outputs:

Ubuntu :: GRUB Does Not Find WIndows 7 Partition?

Jan 7, 2011

I messed up my mbr by deleting my other drive which I guess had the MBR for both my OS (2 Windows 7's). So i installed Ubuntu in an attempt to fix it all hoping to get the GRUB. It then booted directly into Ubuntu. So I ran bootsect.exe tx the mbr and it said success.Still boots into Ubuntu directly without and grub.

I ran sudo update-grub
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-22-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-22-generic

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows Install CD Cannot Find NTFS Partition

May 3, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on my Acer extensa 5620. I need to install windows and setup a dual boot on this machine. Here's what I did. I followed the instructions on this page

[URL]

and resized my home partition (which is differenet from the file system partition). Anyways, I resized the partition and made a new NTFS partition. This was all done from Live CD. I then rebooted and then tried the windows installation CD. Now here my problem crops up.
Windows says that no partition is found. What have I done wrong? Any ideas? Can the drive be damaged or have I made a mistake some where? I did not specify a mount point for the new NTFS partition, does that matter?

Ubuntu :: Can't Find File-roller In Xubuntu Applications Menu?

Jun 3, 2011

find file-roller (aka 'Archive Manager') in xubuntu's Applications menu. I surely have it; it is the default application for opening archives, I can invoke it from the terminal but I can't just... run it from the Applications drop-down.I even tried the Application Finder with no luck using the keywords file-roller, archive, file, roller, .zip. .tar, etc. No luck. Can anyone else find it on their Applications dropdown menu? Or at least tell me that they can't find it either?I'm curious if I have some configuration glitch, or if this is a bug, or maybe there's just something in the water here.

Ubuntu Installation :: Resizing Windows Partition - Install Files On A Non Windows NTFS Partition

Jul 22, 2010

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

Windows XP
Mint
Ubuntu-Studio
Edubuntu
One of the E17 OSs
Puppy Linux (to create a remix)

I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.

Now when ever I boot my computer (Acer Extensa 5620) it AUTOMATICALLY goes into the Win Xp Pro OS. So I have no idea how to access all of my Ubuntu files and programs etc. This is a really big problem as I have yet to hook up Win Xp Pro to the internet. It is an older OS and it has made things very difficult. So I really need to be able to switch OS partitions.

Hardware :: Unallocated Disk Partition Boots Into Xubuntu 10.04

Jun 1, 2010

I've recently come back to Linux after several years away. I've been just sort of preoccupied with many other things. I have set-up an Xubuntu desktop on a 1.8 GHz P4 box with a 60 GB HDD and 500 Mb RAM. It took quite some time with research and playing to finally get it set-up the way I want it - samba, file shares, vncserver, and printing. I decided to try to get a handle on disk and partition imaging and cloning for backup purposes and I've made some fair progress, but I've run into something I can't understand and don't know where to go from here with it.

I used Parted Magic 4.10 on a Live CD to shrink the EXT3 partition on the 60 GB drive to a 10 GB partition. I verified that this worked successfully with df -h in a terminal window. Next, I copied disk (60 GB HDD) to disk (13 GB HDD) with EASEUS Disk Copy 2.3 via a USB connection. To test the copy, I removed the 60 GB HDD and replaced it with the 13 GB HDD. It booted normally into the Xubuntu session and appears to be a perfect copy.I decided to use Parted Magic 4.10 on a Live CD to grow the partition to use the entire disk (10 GB ==> 13 GB). When I booted the Live CD Parted Magic shows the 13 GB disk as totally unallocated.

Can someone please explain what has happened and how it's possible for an unallocated partition to boot.

Ubuntu :: Switching From Windows Server 2003 To 11.04

Jun 1, 2011

I am switching from Windows Server 2003 to Ubuntu 11.04.

These are two different machines, the Windows Server has 2 2TB Hard drives in it, that are setup as a RAID 1. The data on the drives is irreplaceable. I've scoured the internet for about two weeks, trying to find the best solution. It seems like everyone else had a slightly different setup, or the was no solution.

The Ubuntu Server has a 40GB SSD in it. I just installed a 2TB Hard drive (same make and model of the two in the Windows Server) and made the filesystem for it ext3.

First thing I did was just throw the 2 2TB Hard Drives in the new server, and tried to set them up as a software RAID. After it prompt me to erase the drives, I strayed away from that idea.

My end goal is having Ubuntu machine completely replace the Windows machine, so I'll need to setup Samba (which I'm sure I can figure that part out).

How can I get all the data off the 2TB Hard Drives that are using NTFS onto a RAID in the Ubuntu machine with an ext3 filesystem?
