I tried to upgrade to Leonidas from Cambridge, but didn't have enough space on the partition /, so I soft linked /var/cache/yum (or whatever) to a larger partition, but now the upgrade does not find the subdirectory called preupdate (it's there in the linked dir, checked). Is there any more sofisticated way around than changing parition sizes and copying and stuff?

it removes only A & B but the C remain on the disk how i can remove C from the disk.. using the the same command..
I have some problem with yum. When I use yum to make cache,it looks like doesn't work at all.Just like this:

I'm using Opensuse11.4 and have kmail and Firefox. When I click a url: link in kmail it opens a new tab in Firefox. The problem is that the url is linked to my temp cache files as this file:///var/tmp/kdecache-terry/krun/1589.0.ctt
The tab this opens has most of the link icons stripped out and the links to other parts of the website don't work and I get a "file not found" error and the link is to a file which doesn't exist file:///contribute.php3
This is only a minor annoyance as I can right click > copy the url and paste it to the address bar in Firefox then it works ok. I don't think it anything in either programme that's broken because this happened after an update to Opensuse 11.4 on my previous laptop and has happened again on my new laptop with a fresh install.

I get that a grub. I'm not even sure if ubuntu can even boot because my monitor won't let me see anything. I'm using the driver off the nvidia website, not the stock one that came with ubuntu.
This weekend I did a distribution upgrade to Karmic, but it didn't go very well. Upon reboot, I see a white ubuntu logo on a black screen. I hear the speakers pop, and the screen flashes several times, sorta like the blank screen is maybe changing video modes. After a while I see what I think is garbled text but is unreadable, and it looks like I can log on even though I can't read anything. Now, booting into recovery mode gets me to a readable prompt. There are no upgrades to apply. Typing gdm from here gets me to the desktop just fine. Also when booting, if I choose an earlier kernel the system boots fine also, except the touchpad doesn't work.

Did a desktop setup and afterwards installed Eclipse, and I was happy: A new system for coding on-the-go! Now, after upgrading to Lucid with do-release-upgrade -d, I can no longer enter my password on X login. The keyboard just doesn't work for some reason. When I enable the onscreen keyboard, and click my password, I can login. The strange thing is that my keyboard works like a charm after I've logged into my X session?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've just upgraded my web/tv setup from 9.10 to lucid and everything seems to be working apart from my infra red remote control.The remote was working fine in 9.10 and was used to control mythtv-frontend however after the upgrade the remote appears to be controlling ubuntu natively, i.e. right left up and down control what is selected on the desktop where as previously the remote was set to only work within mythtv. Whilst native support for my remote control is muchly appreciated(if that is what this is) where can I configure the controls so that it is usable again?

During the installation, I kept getting tons of errors. Finally something came up saying that I had to abort the installation and it did some stuff. I tried running an application, but I got an error. So I restarted the system.
The normal screen came up where I had to choose the Ubuntu stuff (I'm new to Ubuntu) in the box. I noticed that it had gone to 8.10... which I had earlier before installing 9.04, which went great. So I chose the first on and the system failed to start. I rebooted and tried all the other options, but they all had errors. Now I'm booted to Windows.
I installed Ubuntu from a CD I created. But it is now outdated because it is 8.10, and I have already upgraded to 9.04. 9.04 to 9.10 is where stuff went wrong.
I have a weird problem with Firefox with the following scenario: When I view a picture from a website in the browser and the pictures gets deleted from the server (while I'm viewing it) - I can't save the picture to my hard drive. Firefox always tries to download the picture from the web-server although it's in the cache. Resulting in an image file which contains the HTTP 404 response from the server. *lol*
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got a shared (Windows/multiuser Linux) laptop, and I've got installed World of Warcraft and some steam games in Windows. With steam games, there is (almost) no problems. I've installed steam in Linux, and soft linked the 'steamapps' directory (per-game compatibility is another issue). With WoW, the problem is different. I would like to have almost (but not) all files. Under World of Warcraft, every file and directory must be linked except the Interface directory and WTF/config.wtf file (so every user can play with their own settings and addons). How can I have a mix of linked and not linked files without linking every file? If I link manually every file/dir, when updating from Linux other users and Windows Wow is not updated; when updating from Windows, new files remains "unlinked".

Way back in the day (7 something I think) I had made my .evolution into a link pointing to a very large harddrive. That said, I've never had a problem as evolution happily grabs and stores my e-mails at that linked location. Since the upgrade to 11.04, I still have evolution but it does not store it where I expect it to store it. I still have my little .evolution link in my profile. I still have my old e-mails there but I have no idea where evolution is storing my new e-mails. I don't have any of my folders and my online e-mail stack is growing by the minute
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a /boot partition, and the online update process has downloaded the upgrade to /boot/upgrade. The problem is that grub is actually booting from a directory /boot which is in the root partition, but is invisible once the machine has booted, because the /boot partition is mounted over it. The result of all this is that the upgrade option does not appear in the boot menu, because that option has been inserted in the menu.lst (or grub.conf) in the /boot partition. is it ok for me to run:grub-install /dev/sda4(that's the device that contains the /boot partition where the upgrade menu option and data). Also, do I need the --root-directory option, given that the boot directory is the root directory of that partition.

trying to install nvidia drivers which won't run unless all the xwindows are shut down.
Nvidia either works or it doesn't work under Fedora 10 64 bit OS. I have re-installed Fedora 10 64 bit and Fedora 11 64 bit 10 times each and it's getting real old. I keep erasing my system because Nvidia doesn't want to work. Leighs post does no good on this issue and neither does anyone else's or else it would work.

(I assume because Update manager removed the old nvidia? But I also assumed that a new version would be installed automatically?)I received the following Boot messages:

I'm confused, if Update Manager removed kmod nvidia, then why does yum say it is installed? And why doesn't the new kernel update work with that version? Or should I install a driver version for that particular kernel? I've read while searching that I need to install a kmod-nvidia for that particual kernel version and that I should login to my previous kernel until that happens, is that the problem I'm having?
Why don't rpmfusion and fedoraproject release the kmod-nvidia and kernel updates at the same time to avoid problems such as this? Does anyone know how long does it usually take for rpmfusion to release the new kmod-nvidia driver for the latest kernel?

I installed F11 from the DVD iso. The nouveau driver seemed to work and I could get both monitors working with xrandr.
Then I tried to install the nvidia drivers. I installed akmod-nvidia.
They didn't work. I got this in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

On my PC (fresh FC11 i386 instllataion from CDs), dhclient doesn't work. When it tries to get an IP address with dhclient, it gets No DHCPOFFERS reveived and fails. The ethernet of my PC works fine - I can manually set IP address, netmask, gateway etc. to connect to my persoal Linksys router, but if I change to DHCP, it fails as above. So it's not the problem of the ethernet driver of FC11. I suspect that dhclient of FC11 is buggy. (For the record, DHCP works fine on FC10 and Windows XP with my Linksys router.)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have the Fedora 14 64bit Live CD on a 4GB USB Flash drive, via Live-USB-Creator. I have bootcamp installed on my Macbook Pro (5,5) with OSX, Windows 7, and Ubuntu already installed. I plan to install Fedora over the Ubuntu.
1.)So, when refit boots up, I choose the EFI USB (Fedora) and the Fedora screen comes up.
2.) I click any key to dismiss the auto boot
3.) I click "e" to edit the Fedora kernel, then I edit the first option and add the line "nomodeset"
4.) I press enter, and then "b" to boot that line. The screen kind of goes whack and a fair amount of super small (unreadable) text comes up on the screen and then just hangs with the blinking (_)
If I go into Grub via "c", and type in "nomodeset" it gives me an Error 27 Unrecognized command. And I've read online to press TAB to go into grub, but TAB does nothing for me.
I've installed the Awesome WM using "sudo yum install awesome" (as described here https://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Awesome-3-fedora ). I can also log into awesome, but nothing works! I can open the menu on the top left of the screen, but when I click on e.g. "Open Terminal", nothing happens. Same thing for all other menu options except "Shut down" which logs me out of Awesome. I've also tried the terminal shortcut, but nothing works.
Has anyone an idea how to make it work?
So I've been trying to install to an iSCSI target for the past two weeks and while the installation finishes, booting doesn't work. I get dropped to a shell after boot installation. I have seen some bugs on red hat bugzilla 705213, but don't know how to resolve it. I'm new to Fedora but really want to embrace the distro

I had been running Slackware64 13 almost since it came out and recently upgraded to Slackware64 13.1.Every thing looked to be working well until I tried to burn a DVD with k3B. It starts the burn process but then dies and says that "cdrecord has no permission to open the device".I was able to put in a DVD+RW and erase it without a problem, but when trying to burn to a DVD-R it stops and gives me the error.I checked cdrecord and it is owned by root in the root group.

I burned Fedora onto a disk, but when I turn on the system it just goes straight to the Windows XP login.
I thought it was something wrong with the disk or something like that, but when I pop in the disk on my Dad's laptop, the installation for Fedora runs perfectly.
Also, yes, I checked the order for booting and the CD drive comes before the hard drive.
