I'm planning to install Fedora 11 Release Candidate on my computer because I really need a working Linux system, right now. Once the final version is released, will I have to do a fresh install or do I just update the packages on my system to get the final version?

Is 3.98.1-1 just a release candidate or is there an actual bug in the OFX package?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed on an Acer Aspire One netbook. The same problems with the Netbook Remix and Gnome.
(1) RESTART is hit and miss. It gets stuck and I have to do a hard shutdown (press the on/off switch for a few seconds)
(2) WIRELESS CONNECTION is hit and miss. The Connection Information goes missing. Have to shutdown & restart for it to work (restart never works)
(3) APPLICATIONS FREEZE all of a sudden. The mouse stops working and the keyboard stops working. I have to do a hard shutdown. Restart does not work.
(4) RHYTHMBOX launch is hit & miss. The little icon appears in the tray but I can do nothing - can't ask it to Show Rhythmbox and can't shut it down. Have to use System Monitor and kill the process there. IF MY MACHINE HAS NOT FROZEN DOWN COMPLETELY.
(5) GOOGLE CHROME and FIREFOX browsers run quickly when they start, and then, as time passes, run more and more slowly, until the freeze the whole computer.
I am new bie to linux and i am using FC 9. My intention is to install latest packages of FC11 release to FC9 despite of upgrading entire OS. is their any way to do this .... I have tried doing installing ssh package of FC11 release into FC9 OS but encountered with library errors.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running F11 x86 and want to update to F13 x64, so a new drive and fresh install and copy all the config & data from old drive. and Prey, a lot....I'll be installing F13 x64 later this weekend, But F14 will be out in a few months then F15 and so on.I've tried the upgrade option (x86 to x86 in the past) on the install dvd but it doesn't work and I wind up with a broken install and have to do a fresh install after saving most of the import data and config files, but I usually missing something and get hosed. Part of the problem could be using Nvidia drivers for video and several applications installed from several different repos.I've never been able to safely uninstall the Nvidia driver and still have a working system, let alone upgrade to a newer version and still get a visible desktop.
I was thinking that couldn't I just edit a yum file and point it to a new repository and have it upgrade the machine with out all the fuss?I followed a procedure once or twice on how to do a inplace upgrade, but that didn't work either. I'd like to keep the machine running the latest bits, but with all the pain and suffering I need a simpler method to do it. Is there a procedure or process I can run or follow to keep Fedora in sync with the latest release with out having to continuously swap disks, reinstall and copy critical data files?
I have an F14 system which was created by preupgrade in two stages from an F12 system. I had a couple of preupgrade crashes along the way, but was able to resolve them and the installation appears to be working fine except for some minor yum problems. Yum appears to be confused about which release it is at. It has a number of 'fedora-release' packages installed:

If I include --releasever=14 in each yum operation, things seem to work normally. However if I leave this out, every yum operation creates hundreds of 'duplicate package' messages, and fails to proceed. I assume if I could remove the outdated release packages, the problem would be resolved - but I haven't been able to find how to do this.
I'm currently using Fedora 15 Beta on my laptop and I always use YUM to update my OS every week. I have a question that when official release of Fedora 15 will be available, should I reinstall that stable version on my laptop? Does YUM application automatically update the latest packages for my OS?

How to install fedora15 without internet? I used grub4dos to start a local harddisk installation but it failed when asking me to confingure an network connection, which is hardware-equipped but not available at the moment. Anaconda said some software needed to be downloaded from internet, but I've already downloaded a full ISO. This happened right after selecting where to put grub (the step after preparing the hard disk). How can I install F15 without connecting to Internet??

I have Fedora 14 installed on my s/m with the default gnome desktop environment. Now, I want to install some KDE applications which I found to be very useful. I want to install KDE from fedora 14 DVD as my internet connection is very slow. It was a failure when I tried pointing the yum.repos.d/fedora.repo file to DVD to install using yum. Should I create a repository like what we do in RHEL to configure yum server(How to do it in fedora ???) Or is there any other method to install KDE repository on my system.

I am unable to download rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm from [URL]. i always get a error 404 -Not found. But i am sure my internet is working fine. I tried from windows, Fedora 14 got the same error message all the time.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI know that there have been a lot of messages (with repo correction info posted) for yum updates after install; but I'm trying to do an internet install of F11 and I'm getting the same message. Obviously I can't change a yum.conf file for this -- but it does give one the option to edit the location.
The default location is: [URL].. There's one other big flaw with the internet install -- it writes HD partition changes to the disk right after you set up the partition scheme; shouldn't it wait until it knows it can connect to the repository?? I had to boot to a Ubuntu live dvd to get on here to post this. I'm definitely not saving time using the internet install option.
I got online last night and found some of the info. on the yum updates issue, with different mirrors or repositores. So what I tried changing for the default repo / metadata location, using the edit option is:
I changed the word metalink to mirrorlist. I changed https to http. I tried using http://mirror.liberty.edu/pub (etc) which is actually an rpm fusion mirror. I likewise tried http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu (etc.) I gave up and went to bed, and this morning I just tried the http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/$releasever/Everything/$basearch/os/ (and I also tried the above redhat.com address substituting i386 for basearch and 11 for $releasever) -- no go with any of that. Same error message about cannot retrieve installer metadata.
All of the other messages I've seen on this issue have been about Yum updates; not installs. Hopefully the install DVD will show up in the next couple of hours; but I'd like to make this work if I can ??
I work for AT&T and our Windows-centric workgroup is being tasked with supporting an app running on RedHat. To help my coworkers, I'm building a Fedora 11 VM that we can play with to familiarize ourselves with the UNIX environment.
Because of corporate network policies in place, my VM can't get access to the Internet.
Since we're AT&T employees, we're naturally using the korn shell on the production system. I'd like to install the korn shell on my VM. However, it doesn't appear to be part of the base fedora repository.
Is the korn shell available for Fedora? If so, how would I copy it to shiny media, mount it on my VM, and install it?
I have had webmin running previously but i just recently installed Unbuntu server and i am now trying to install webmin. after typing this to install webmin sudo apt-get install webmin it started doing its thing and then it halts.
Giving me the following message: "Package webmin is not available, but is referred to by another package. this may mean that the package is missing, had been obsoleted , or is only available from another source."
The first thing i did after installing webmin was edit the sources.list
Then i tpyed sudo nano sources.list I uncommented everything with "deb" in front of it
I also uncommented
deb cdrom:
I then typed this sudo wget [url]
After getting that i typed this apt-get install perl libnet-ssleay-perl openssl libauthen-pam-perl libpam-runtime libio-pty-perl libmd5-perl
Then i tryed to install it and got that error.

When i got to the part when i need to type

I hope this is the right section, it looks like though. I have a small nas ( via artigo a2000 ) with 2 sata hd 1tb each with raid 1 and lvm on top configured and working great.
sda1 and sdb1 ==> md0 raid1 for /boot
sda2 and sdb2 ==> md1 raid1 for swap
sda3 and sdb3 ==> md2 raid1 as physical volume then volume group and lvs on top ( / is a logial volume of these )
I wish to upgrade the current fedora 12 32bit installation I have on it doing a fresh install. But because I have a lot of data on md2 ( 600GB worth ) which I don't want to copy across somewhere else first, I need to know how ( i am pretty sure i can ) to mount md2 during the installation. This way I can use the data I already have on it.
I install fedora 10. But I don't have internet connection, when I Run add or remove software nothing listed and I couldn't remove any package.And when I want to add any rpm package, my fedora does't install that.How can I add or remove software in fedora without internet connection.

I downloaded the latest release, burned a disk and successfully booted. When it comes time to choose a partition I don't have the option of replacing the old release. I can install in parallel leaving both but can't use the whole disk. Interestingly enough I CAN replace the windows installation. Of course I already have Grub installed but I don't see how this would affect installing. I read the article here [URL] and it seems I may have missed a step. However it's implied I will lose the current Grub installation. Is that the case?

I write apps for webOS, and need to use the palm emulator. The emulator runs on virtualbox-3.0 to virtualbox-3.2 only (no support for virtualbox 4). After adding the virtualbox source, I still cannot install virtualbox-3.2, and am instead given the error:

I can't install Ubuntu 11.04 32bit Desktop edition on my Dell Mini 10v. I followed the instructions from the Ubuntu website and made a bootable USB drive using the universal USB installer for windows. I put the usb drive on my netbook and prompted the boot options to boot from the usb drive. Once I got to the installation screen and attempt to install ubuntu on my hard drive it goes blank for a few moments, and a wall of text floods my screen and it stops installing.
