View 12 RepliesI did a fresh install of Fedora 13, 32-bit, with GNOME desktop. My goal is to watch DVDs with VLC media player. I followed the steps in this website to install the media players, codecs, VLC etc. -
Code:
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f13.html
Everything was successful until I got stuck at this point (the DVD Playback section) -
Code:

I was trying to play some mp3s and mp4s in my totem but keep on getting this error report of which I have attached some screenshots. I also tried to download some things that I usually put on my system such as: vlc, ffmpeg, dvdbackup, dvdrip, audacity, thoggen, handbrake, audacious & sound converter but I fail in the process.
Here are my outputs:
Code: [root@localhost ~]# yum install ffmpeg libdvdcss libdvdread libdvdnav libdvdplay lsdvd mplayer gxine
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
google-chrome | 951 B 00:00
google-chrome/primary | 1.4 kB 00:00

I have it installed and running nicely so I am following sqlpython's "How To: Full multimedia in Squeeze" to get my various players playing. sqlpython seems to have been running a KDE environment while I am running Gnome, but that should not make a critical difference.
If I do (as root) apt-get install libdvdcss apt does not find it. Same result for libdvdcss2.
BTW, which of these would be more appropriate for my 64-bit squeeze?
etc/apt/sources.list shows:
#
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux testing _Squeeze_ - Official Snapshot amd64 NETINST Binary-1 20100217-22:04]/ squeeze main

rather after I have had no problems installing 11.3 on a new hard drive, , can I simply mount the old one and copy libdvdcss to the same location on the new drive, or does it need to be "installed"?
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter being puzzled why every guide saying to install the 'libdvdcss' package wasn't working, the package simply not being found; it turns out that in the shift to RPM Fusion, that libdvdcss was the only package that Livna was still going to carry due to RPM Fusion's refusal - in case you didn't know.
I've installed all of the gstreamer plugins, xine-extra-libs and libdvdcss, all of the ones that are suggested. Yet I still cannot play a DVD with VLC. I was wandering if you could help me diagnose why?
We use SLED10.1 as the base O/S for our Point-of-sale registers and we have run into the need for these registers to play .mov files that are sent down from the corporate office. The base installed KAFFEINE or REALPLAYER won't play those extensions. Can anyone recommend a good .mov player that doesn't require the libdvdcss libraries. (We can't use those for legal reasons). I tried downloading the latest XINE but got lost in RPM-hell and finally gave up.
View 4 Replies View RelatedTo put it bluntly, mplayer is unable to correctly play video DVDs. It seems to correctly find the title and everything, but the picture is broken or not displayed at all, with messages like:
a52: CRC check failed!
a52: error at resampling
[mpeg1video @ 0xa8d840]sequence header damaged
[mpeg1video @ 0xa8d840]Missing picture start code
Now, this all is on amd64 Gentoo Linux system. I believe the problem is not in mplayer itself, since the playback also breaks in VLC or when i copy the VOBs via vobcopy and try to play them afterwards.
I use libdvdcss-1.2.10 and libdvdread-4.1.3_p1168 (current stable in Gentoo), and tried previous versions of both libs, but it didn't change a thing.
The DVDs I have tried play fine in regular DVD player or on a Windows laptop. I remember the playback used to work about a year ago and I don't know what to try next.
I have an annoying problem with kubuntu9.10. I've reeinstalled it and instead of starting up dragon player which then recommends installing extra packages for multimedia, i chose to manually install the restricted extras (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras).Everything seems to work, except for playback of dvd's which doesn't work. When I search in kpackagekit for libdvdcss, w32codecs etc it can't find anything. It seem as if it lacks some software sources but when I have everything enabled (universe-restricted-multiverse)So, what can I do to install these files (and others, don't know everything to play (encrypted) dvds).
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Fedora 12 i386 using CD#1 for a minimal install. For that during installation I selected only Base. For some reason when I started installation it was trying to install 432 packages (Base has got about 80 or so packages). i can understand there might be some dependencies, but really that much? I kept going with the installation of 432 packages, but it finally failed on gtk2-immodule-xim-2.18.3-19.fc12.i686.rpm.I need just minimal install, so I can install LXDE later on by myself.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have been using Redhat/Fedora for 11 years. I don't understand why Fedora 11, can't even do a vga graphical install, when Windows can.
I tried many parameters, including xdriver=vesa, and it cannot used graphical install.
So, I tried text install, which I have done many times in the past.
However, F11 seems crippled, in that it will NOT do the same install achievable from a graphical install.
It will NOT allow the use of fdisk, and it will NOT allow any selection of any packages.
What is the point of this option?
Even after trying all of this, for a dual boot install, and F11 claims to have installed, there is no grub or equivalent, and the computer just boots windows, just like Fedora 11 did absolutely nothing.
What are the options now? Why is text install so crippled and incomplete? Why is standard VGA mode so hard?
I have migrated from Debian to Fedora 14 (2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64). Problem is that I can't get my networked printer to work (which it did with Debian). The printer is Samsung ML-3561ND and I got all he drivers & PPD from Samsung support. I prefer to install the printer with CUPS and not with Samsung Unified Linux install software. I have to send my documents to a user's Windows workstation and print from there I have googled a lot but have not found any solution.

I now have Fedora 14 64bit up and running.
I need a bit of clarification. I've been using Debian based OSes. I just want to make sure that I understand how to install software using Fedora.
While I had the Live DVD desktop running I downloaded the Google Chrome .rpm pack to the download file, right clicked on the .rpm and opened with the archive manager. The archive manager came up and showed me a file folder, the a popup came up on it's own and ask if I wanted to install, clicked yes and every thing from there worked, Chrome was installed and worked. When I tryied to download the plugin for Google and do the same as before, the install popup didn't come up. This is the part where I made a mistake, I went to the download folder and double clicked on the .rpm and the install popup came up, and I installed. This some how messed up the Live desktop to the point that I had to reboot, shut down didn't even work right.
I should have opened the folder the archive manager placed the .rpm and then double clicked on the .rpm to install instead of within the dowload folder.
I aslo read up on how to use rpm -i filename From the terminal can I Or does the .rpm package have to be in the correct folder before installing?
Also from the live dvd I tried using sudo rpm -i , but got a warning and said I would be reported.
what is repository's ? do we need to install repository each time we install any package ?or cant we just say yum install package name ? & how to install tar.gz files ?

My laptop is currently running on Windows 7 Ultimate. I have a 320 GB HDD, which I have partitioned as follows. C: Drive as Windows 40 GB capacity and successively partitioned the rest of the drives for 50 GB capacity and left an unallocated space of 67 GB for fedora 13 x64 installation. The problem that I am facing is, that I am unable to install fedora on this unallocated space..even though I am checking the option for "Creating custom Layout". When I check the option for "Creating Custom Layout" Ive been shown with the only option to install fedora on the unused space on the HDD which is around 265 GB. I am also attaching a screen shot of my disk management. how I can install Fedora on this unallocated space of 67 GB?
View 12 Replies View RelatedThis post is for an HP parallel printer but I think it should work for at least "some" other parallel printers.I am sure that someone smarter than me will follow up this post with a "well, just do this and that" and you will have your HP Laserjet 6P printer ready to go, but since questions litter the forums of MANY distros on how to get "at least" an HP parallel printer to work, I'll post this anyway. This may or may not work for you if you do not have an HP but you can try it.The install printer box will let you do an install for an HP Parallel and it asks for how it is to talk to it, through CUPS sock or "local host'. When we get through what I recommend you should chose "local host".

I have a Western Digital Pasport 320 GB hard drive. I wanted to create a live installation on it like a USB stick. I wanted it to serve as a portable OS that I could use to boot any other computer off of, and use it for diagnostics and anti-virus scanning on Windows based computers. The additional space is for my own personal use, kind of like having a mobile desktop where I have all of my documents in one place. What I need to know is how to set up Fedora 11 so that the hard drive will boot on most PCs regardless of their architecture. I also need to know what's a good Anti-virus to install onto it for the sake of fixing Windows hard drives.
Please keep in mind I'm a noob when it comes down to a lot of things, so if there's an antivirus I have to install manually, please included a step by step.
Recently installed F12 through the text based install and have got to GNOME gui but when i got to system/administration i only get two options and those are for display changes. Is there some way to install the features i missed out on? namely Add/remove programs which i can't seem to find anywhere
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I want to install the original version of Fedora 15 and make it dual boot with my Windows 7. Problem here is that I don't have a cd/rom. and the iso file didn't have a .exe thingy.....

Originally I had Ubuntu running on my machine. I installed windows beta 7 with a working dual boot. Get everything working in grub again. I decided to give Fedora a try and wiped my Ubuntu partition and installed Fedora. Everythings all good...except the reconfiguration of grub has left out my Windows 7 partition (nothing out of the norm) I tried manually adding windows 7 to /boot/grub/menu.lst but it's not working, when I try to boot into Windows 7 i get a little flashing "_" for a really long time and nothing happens.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am an inexperienced Linux user, I have tried Knoppix and Ubuntu in the past. Since we use Fedora servers at work I have wanted to try Fedora for some time and I tried running it in a virtual machine. My virtual machine is Sun VirtualBox and my OS is Vista Ultimate. Everything worked well until it was time to decide where Fedora is to be installed.Alright, screenshot time yet? This is where I hit the wall, the screen where you select installation drive/partition. The field is greyed out as you can see.
I have prepared a partition, at first I formatted it in FAT32 but because I didn't see it in the installation screen I just re-formatted it in NTFS.Installing with virtual machine should be working? Why is the field grey? What to do? Is it because I have mounted the dowloaded disc image instead of burning it?
I have a 64-bit architecture AMD processor with 2GB RAM and have tried Ubuntu 64-bit in the past, is there a 64-bit version of Fedora and would that be better or worse for me than 32-bit version?
I'm planning to install Fedora 11 Release Candidate on my computer because I really need a working Linux system, right now. Once the final version is released, will I have to do a fresh install or do I just update the packages on my system to get the final version?
