Fedora :: Generate Report Other Than Going Through All The Nagios Configuration Files And Putting It Together Manually?

Feb 23, 2010

I have an existing Nagios installation from before I started working here. It seems to be working well but my boss has just asked for a report of what servers and the associated processes/functions are being monitored. Is there any way to generate this report other than going through all the Nagios configuration files and putting it together manually?

Ubuntu Servers :: Manually Forcing Rotation Didn't Generate Any Errors

Jan 28, 2011

I have 1 Ubuntu server acting as a gateway / proxy and a bunch of iptables rules to log packets from each of these systems. This is done to monitor internet acces. The resulting log file grows to about 80 - 100Mb on a daily basis. I tried setting up log logrotate ( through webmin as well as manually ) to rotate this log file every night at 11:00 pm. However, the file does not get rotated. when i run logrotate -d /etc/logrotate.conf everything goes through fine. i get a message saying that the file qualifies for rotation and no errors.

If i manually force the rotation ( through webmin ) it happens. However, on its own, the log file does not get rotated. I am completely stumped. I tried replicating the exact same settings that are set for syslog rotation, and still no luck. All the other log files do get rotated at the appropriate time ( i have checked in the /var/log/ directory ), but this one does not. I thought it might have been because i had some prerotate and postrotate scripts. Manually forcing rotation did not generate any errors and the scripts ran without any problems. But even then, i removed those scripts, and still no luck. this is the config file for logrotate ( in /etc/logrotate.d/bcrl )

[code]...

I updated the system just one day before this problem ( the second one ) surfaced, but i do not remember what got updated. is there any way to check?

Software :: Manually Executing Entry In Nagios Checkcommands.cfg

Mar 10, 2011

First I don't know Nagios. I've been left with a fairly large(350 servers, 750 services) Nagios system installed. I've scraped and googled till I'm blue in the face. The Nagios folks have been less than helpful in that they tell me I need to figure it out myself. I've tried for four days to *figure it out myself*.

I have an entry in the checkcommands.cfg file:

# 'check_dns_external' command definition
define command{
command_name check_dns_external
command_line $USER1$/check_dns -H $HOSTNAME$ -t 60 -s 4.2.2.1 -a $HOSTADDRESS$
}

First, I don't understand what this command means and does. Next, I don't understand how to manually execute this command. I do know that the command in automatic mode has stopped working as Nagios tries to execute and I get an error message on the Service Status Types: Nagios alert page. The alert doesn't come with any regularity as to time of day or availability of resources. Apparently, this Nagios command is executing randomly. It is waking me up several times a night and several times a day as we page out alerts via email.

I'm lost. Aside from bouncing the entire Nagios stack, which is not possible right away as this is a Production system, is there any way to manually execute the offending line described above? Again, I've asked the Nagios folks and they have declined to answer.

Networking :: Nagios Configuration With The NRPE?

May 17, 2011

I've followed all the instructions in nagios documentation to install the nrpe agent in a remote host, but the daemon nrpe is not listening on port.. that means I can't even test it localhost!

netstat -at | grep nrpe
returns nothing.
You added the nrpe entry to your /etc/services file - done
The only_from directive in the /etc/xinetd.d/nrpe file contains an entry for "127.0.0.1" - done
xinetd is installed and started - done

Check the system log files for references about xinetd or nrpe and fix any problems that are reported - syslog empty..

Installed lsof and lsof +M -i4:

xinetd 25680 root 5u IPv4 75987 TCP *:nrpe (LISTEN)

Is there anything else I can do to correct this? I configured this yesterday and it was working ok.. but today when got into computer it stopped working

Debian Configuration :: Dpkg Report No Space Left On /usr With >1GiB Free

As far as I can see oxygen-icon-theme unpacks only in /usr/share, beyond it I can think of only /tmp, /var or /var/tmp that it may use, all of which have plenty more than those ~40 MiB that it supposed to occupy unpacked. All btrfs filesystems were formatted with "-d single -m single". System is Debian Sid 64-bit with linux-image-3.0.0-rc5-amd64.

why dpkg may have trouble unpacking this package?

Server :: Nagios - Advanced Notifications Configuration Questions

Oct 30, 2010

I'm working hard with Nagios 3.0.4 on Debian Lenny. I have some questions. I can't find any information about these issues. I have hosts with a first_notification_delay of 60 minutes.And I have the whole day a Nagios controlling the same hosts. It's good to know if the same host is turned on during the night, but my work period begins at 10:00 am and it finish at 22:00 pm, I'm not a lucky boy I have configured a notification Period to 10:00 am to 22:00 pm.

Question 1: If a host goes into hard state CRITICAL, I know that Nagios waits 60 minutes to send a notification, but What happens if the host recovers before the first_notification_delay period ( for example, 30 min before)?Does it send the recovery notification or not?

Question 2: If a hard state happens at 21:59. Does Nagios wait until the 10:00 am of the day after to send the notification? If the host recovers at 9:00 am of the day after is the notification message cancelled?

Ubuntu :: Generate Compressed Files In Zip Format ?

Oct 30, 2010

I was trying to figure out how to generate compressed files in zip format and searched on here. The search produced a list of forum entries on the topic, but all of the instructions were on how to do it in terminal, how to download obscure programs and install them from terminal, then run them from terminal, with all these arcane sets of switches and parameters. Eesh.

It comes with Ubuntu, after all. In the case of zipping files, all you have to do is to go to the File Manager, find the file(s), select it or them, right-click on it or them, and select Compress and file type zip. It's so simple.

There have been a number of other tasks where I wind up spending hours figuring out how to implement the advice offered in these forums through Terminal. The folks who offer the advice often are so good at it that they leave out steps obvious to them, but that take a lot of work for somebody not as skilled at it to find out. After crawling through broken glass to get the job done, and normally screwing something up so it's not quite right once I get it going, I figure out how to do it through the GUI and find out it takes a fraction of the effort.

Software :: Automatically Generate Text Files ?

Sep 17, 2010

I have a personal server that is password protected. I convert my movies, and make it so that I can watch them through a browser when I want to. I have quite a few movies. They are sorted into different directories. In each directory there is a WebM folder that contains the video file.

Here is what I want to do:Scan all of the directories and subdirectories in /var/www/ for files with extension of webm.

When a file is found, go to the parent directory and create an html file with the same name as the video, only with an html extension instead of webm.

Automatically enter the following html code into the file with the file name matching the file that was found.

Code:

Is it possible to do this with a script? Is there a GUI program that can do this? I don't mind running the script every time after I convert a movie, but if it could monitor the folders that would be nice.

CentOS 5 :: Can't Get Kdump To Generate Dump Files?

Dec 7, 2010

I'm posting because I've read everything I can find on google and in the forum and the man page and still can't get it to work. I did read the FAQ, I hope I have adhered to it.I've tried several things and I don't remember exactly everything I tried and in what order.I've got several (12) HP ProLiant DL140 G3 servers running CentOS 5 that lockup about once a week. These are in a remote colo cage so I all i have access to is the built-in HP lights-out management interface, which includes a console, and ssh. I've been trying to get kdump setup to try to figure out what's going on. As an aside, if I run top on the console (via the management interface) the servers stay up for about a week, if I don't run top they crash within about 48 hours.I've used yum update to update to the latest available kernel (2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.x86_64) and installed the debuginfo and debuginfo-common RPMs from http://debuginfo.centos.org/5/x86_64/I have a single command in the /etc/kdump.conf file:ext3 /dev/sda5

Ubuntu Security :: Encrypt Files Using The Keys - Generate ?

In general, I cannot find how to encrypt files using the keys I generate. Maybe I'm missing something? Probably, I just thought since Ubuntu comes with OOB key generation it would have OOB encryption capabilities.

I've read about seahorse and other ways to ADD encryption, I'm just wondering if ubuntu does it natively. It'd be a good idea to add to brainstorms, right click and encrypt.

Debian Configuration :: Always Need To Run Dhclient Manually For Connection

Aug 9, 2015

My network configuration is in a weird situation, that I always need to run dhclient manually each time after a network connection is established. When my computer connects to a router, sometimes it won't get a valid IP, and it uses an automatically generated fake Internet IP. In this situation, it won't connect to the Internet at all. Sometimes it get a valid local network IP, but still cannot connect to WAN, and could only connect to my router's address (both through ping and through router's management webpage). In both situation, it can be solved by a simple dhclient run.

This is my /etc/network/interfaces file:

Code: Select all# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
iface wlan0 inet dhcp

and this is my /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf:

Code: Select all[main]
plugins=ifupdown,keyfile
dhcp=dhclient
#no-auto-default=FE:50:52:BE:46:4C,
