General :: Manually Generate A Fake ACPI Lid Event From A Script?

Jul 4, 2010

I'm trying to make sure that my laptop will suspend if I unplug it after the lid is already closed, and I believe that one way to accomplish this would be to simulate an ACPI lid event when the power adapter is plugged or unplugged. In order to do this, I need to find a command that will generate a fake ACPI lid event. Is there any such command?

Hardware :: Acpi Events From Specific Input Event Sources?

Oct 6, 2010

The remote for my Pinnacle PCTV HD 800i is generating key code 116 for the power button on it, and acpid (debian/squeeze 2.0.6-1) merrily accepts this as if I pressed the power button on the case. It raises the same event "button/power PBTN 00000080 00000000" either way, so I can't tweak the handlers to respond to one or the other. And I don't think the source event source is available to the handlers.

acpid doesn't seem configurable at all in terms of ignoring an event source, and I don't know if you can selectively remap keys from a particular event source. Most of what I find are people try to get buttons to work, not disable them. Not that it seems to make any difference, but it's mapped to void in dumpkeys.

Code:
keycode 116 = Do
altgr control keycode 116 = VoidSymbol
shift alt keycode 116 = VoidSymbol

I have it remapped in X for use in mythtv using xmodmap, which works fine. The acpid that came with debian/lenny didn't do this.

Ubuntu Servers :: Manually Forcing Rotation Didn't Generate Any Errors

Jan 28, 2011

I have 1 Ubuntu server acting as a gateway / proxy and a bunch of iptables rules to log packets from each of these systems. This is done to monitor internet acces. The resulting log file grows to about 80 - 100Mb on a daily basis. I tried setting up log logrotate ( through webmin as well as manually ) to rotate this log file every night at 11:00 pm. However, the file does not get rotated. when i run logrotate -d /etc/logrotate.conf everything goes through fine. i get a message saying that the file qualifies for rotation and no errors.

If i manually force the rotation ( through webmin ) it happens. However, on its own, the log file does not get rotated. I am completely stumped. I tried replicating the exact same settings that are set for syslog rotation, and still no luck. All the other log files do get rotated at the appropriate time ( i have checked in the /var/log/ directory ), but this one does not. I thought it might have been because i had some prerotate and postrotate scripts. Manually forcing rotation did not generate any errors and the scripts ran without any problems. But even then, i removed those scripts, and still no luck. this is the config file for logrotate ( in /etc/logrotate.d/bcrl )

[code]...

I updated the system just one day before this problem ( the second one ) surfaced, but i do not remember what got updated. is there any way to check?

General :: Unable To Access Intel Fake RAID 1 Array In Fedora 14 After Reboot

Jan 6, 2011

1st I am relatively new to linux (but not to *nix). I have 4 disks assembled in the following intel ahci bios fake raid arrays:

2x320GB RAID1 - used for operating systems md126
2x1TB RAID1 - used for data md125

I have used the raid of size 320GB to install my operating system and the second raid I didn't even select during the installation of Fedora 14. After successful partitioning and installation of Fedora, I tried to make the second array available, it was possible to make it visible in linux with mdadm --assembe --scan , after that I created one maximum size partition and 1 maximum size ext4 filesystem in it. Mounted, and used it. After restart - a few I/O errors during boot regarding md125 + inability to mount the filesystem on it and dropped into repair shell. I commented the filesystem in fstab and it booted. To my surprise, the array was marked as "auto read only":

[Code]...

and the partition in it was not available as device special file in /dev:

General :: Get A Mouse Event To Cause Keystroke?

Mar 14, 2010

I have a Logitech Media Play mouse with many buttons. I'm using xbindkeys to create some shortcuts to programs e.g. firefox, gnome-terminal--these work wonderful. What I cannot figure out is how to get the buttons to work for the media player(Ubuntu>System>Keyboard Shortcuts>Sound). I set shortcuts using my win key and letters, hoping to use xbindkeys to send out a keystroke. I have tried to use xmacro but to no avail. xdotool was not helpful, I think it may be outdated(desktop/workspace functions did not work).

My preferred option would be to get mouse events to keystrokes working with xbindkeys and program x(x being whatever works); however, just getting my media buttons to interact with the media play is my ultimate goal.

General :: Acpi Won't Let Boot

Feb 23, 2011

I haven't been able to use linux for like 6 months I've tried Fedora 14, Debian Testing, Ubuntu 10.04 and now Mint KDE.

Whenever I boot any distro my laptop acts randombly, it gets to GDM and it freezes, or it lets me login and then freezes or works really slow, even through the shell.

The only thing I could figured is to insert acpi=off on the boot commands googling around, and there it boots.

My problem is that it gets overheated, I can't use any porcessor policy and I can't suspend my laptop with that boot line.

General :: Appending Acpi=off To Grub Two

I have a Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000 it had windows7 on it when I bought it new. Needless to say windows just ran too slow. The only Ubuntu distro that would boot up was Karmic 9.10. I had to append the phrase acpi=off to get the live ISO to boot I had to type acpi=off after the word splash. I saw it would boot so I installed it as the only OS on this computer.

Now when I boot up I am hitting the power button once and the back on again to get to the grub. I hit the E key use my arrows down to the word splash type acpi=off. Then hit CTRL X to boot up. How do I put this permanently into Grub2.

General :: Unable To Start X When Booting With Acpi=off Or Modeset=0

Jun 30, 2011

Yesterday I thought I had solved my "Blank screen boot"-issue when I successfully got to the terminal login screen without the screen going black by booting with

Code:
Linux acpi=off
I spoke too soon. I found out shortly after that when trying to "startx" with acpi off gave me these errors:
Code:
WARNING: Error inserting i2c_algo_bit ("filepath"): No such device
WARNING: Error inserting intel_agp ("filepath"): No such device

[Code]....

Then I read somewhere that booting with "i915.modeset=0" might work. So I removed acpi=off from lilo and added this, and sure enough, I got to terminal login, but I get the same errors with "startx".

I must make it clear that I can successfully perform startx when I boot without "acpi=off" or "i915.modeset=0", I am unable to see the screen but I can hear the KDE fanfare, etc.

General :: ACPI Error & Kernel Panic On Boot - Fedora 12

Jan 7, 2010

I just installed Fedora 12. When I boot, only the following three lines are printed: pnp 00:09: can't evaluate _CRS: 12298 ACPI: Expecting a [Reference] package element, found type 0 Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) I first installed Fedora using a RAID 1 setup that mirrored each partition, so I thought the problem was coming from GRUB and confusion from what to boot off of. However, I reinstalled Fedora using a simple single drive setup (left the second drive without any partition), and the same error was returned. Is this an ACPI issue with this particular motherboard/BIOS? Any ideas for how I can fix this?

echo $RANDOM

There you can see that it is the same number. It does that every time!! Grrr. The strange thing is each time I manually type [or copy & paste] it into the terminal, it gives random [not static, like I am getting from my script] results.

The reason I want this is because I am making a script where this line will randomly go up or down [depending on if the random number is 1 or 0].
