OpenSUSE Network :: SAMBA - Changing Default Permissions On Files And Directories Created From Windows Clients

I have a fileserver running openSUSE 11.2 and samba services for file access from MS Windows based workstations. My question relates to changing default permissions on files and directories created from the windows clients.

Following are extracts of the /etc/samba/smb.conf file :

Even with the above entries, sometimes there are files and directories created by the windows clients having permission

Probably my lack of understanding in ACLS.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Configuration And Setting Permissions

Nov 16, 2010

First let me say that Lubuntu is a lightweight version of Ubuntu, so there is not much point in loading it up with unnecessary packages. If you just want to share printers on a Linux network, you don't need Samba. And if you just want a way that users can "push" files to others on a network, use Giver (+ Avahi) as this is a better option. Especially as it sorts out file permissions for you.

To enable file sharing on a Lubuntu 10.10 machine, go to Preferences > Synaptic Package Manager and add the following:-
* samba
* system-config-samba
* gvfs-bin
* gvfs-backends
...accepting any dependancies, 11 packages in total.

I suggest you re-boot now. As an initial test, go to file manager (pcmanfm) and enter:-
smb://localhost
You should see the local print$ folder listed.

To access folder shares remotely
* open file manager (pcmanfm)
* enter the IP address or computer name of the machine you wish to access
e.g. smb://192.168.0.99 or smb://print-server

To share a folder:-
Go to: Preferences > Samba (enter password when requested)
In the Samba Configuration screen:-
* File > Add Share
* use Browse... to select folder to be shared
* Tick "Visible" and (if required} "Writable"
* In the "Access" select "Allow access to everyone"
Set the Linux permissions:-
* locate the folder to share in file manager
* right click on the folder and select Properties > Permissions
* set the required permissions, e.g. Other: Read & Write (to allow anyone full access)

Ubuntu Networking :: Reset Network COnfiguration And Default Ports?

Jun 25, 2010

The other day I was using BitTornado and it was running so slow it was almost unholy. After some research I found out that if the yellow light was on it means I couldn't receive any incoming connections and had to open some ports on the firewall. That, my friends, is not the problem. I tried to manually open up the bittorrent port and did some other things that I can't quite remember but eventually I accidentally killed all bittorrent functionality on my laptop.

Is there any way I can reset my network and ports back to the default settings or am I utterly screwed? I'd really prefer not to have to reinstall my whole OS just to fix my bittorrent or worse, have to download on Vista *shudders*. I'd rather go back to my uber-slow bittorrent than none at all. I've tried everything I can think of, even the godlike might of Google couldn't get me out of this one. Now I am forced to bother you, all because I wanted to see a damn sci-fi film from Switzerland (Cargo[2009]).

Ubuntu :: Generate Compressed Files In Zip Format ?

Oct 30, 2010

I was trying to figure out how to generate compressed files in zip format and searched on here. The search produced a list of forum entries on the topic, but all of the instructions were on how to do it in terminal, how to download obscure programs and install them from terminal, then run them from terminal, with all these arcane sets of switches and parameters. Eesh.

It comes with Ubuntu, after all. In the case of zipping files, all you have to do is to go to the File Manager, find the file(s), select it or them, right-click on it or them, and select Compress and file type zip. It's so simple.

There have been a number of other tasks where I wind up spending hours figuring out how to implement the advice offered in these forums through Terminal. The folks who offer the advice often are so good at it that they leave out steps obvious to them, but that take a lot of work for somebody not as skilled at it to find out. After crawling through broken glass to get the job done, and normally screwing something up so it's not quite right once I get it going, I figure out how to do it through the GUI and find out it takes a fraction of the effort.

Ubuntu Security :: Encrypt Files Using The Keys - Generate ?

Sep 8, 2010

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. I love the passwords and keys application, but was somewhat surprised at the lack of a context menu in gnome to encrypt a file.

In general, I cannot find how to encrypt files using the keys I generate. Maybe I'm missing something? Probably, I just thought since Ubuntu comes with OOB key generation it would have OOB encryption capabilities.

I've read about seahorse and other ways to ADD encryption, I'm just wondering if ubuntu does it natively. It'd be a good idea to add to brainstorms, right click and encrypt.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Crashes 11.04 When Transferring Files <1gb?

Aug 9, 2011

I've got a quadcore PC, 2gb ram pc running ubuntu 11.04 with samba set up on a shared folder - the plan is to share files and media between myself and my housemates. However, I do not have the router attached by ethernet, I am connecting to the router (in another room) by a d-link wireless dongle.

I can access the share without real issue from my windows laptop and other computers in the house share I'm part of, and I can happily transfer a text file here and there, but it seems to be anything over 20mb will not go. All the files I am trying to transfer are >1gb and it's driving me mad.

After some decent transfer rates of around 1mb per second it just freezes up. The screen attached to the actual server goes blank and the host becomes unreachable by ping.I'll be happy to provide any command results or anything to get this working. any assistance would be welcome!

Ubuntu Networking :: Deleting Files Off A Samba Share From A Windows Box?

May 17, 2011

I'm trying to make my music directory, located on my Ubuntu box, available to all the windows clients (Windows 7, to be specific) located around the apartment. It seems to work fine, I can see and read from the shares from my windows box, but deleting files doesn't work, I just get a permission denied.I've tried being as lenient as I can in the smb.conf, as well as setting 777 on the affected files, nothing changes. I've read, from my various googling, that the octal file permissions aren't as important as the samba permissions. Okay fine, but how do I tell samba to ignore permissions and let everyone delete files? I've read that samba works with samba users, but again, I don't care about users, I just want a global share that anyone can connect to and read (and delete) files.

Here's my smb.conf file: http:[url]...As you can see, I've played around a bit with options, but I just can't seem to get anything to work.

Software :: Automatically Generate Text Files ?

Here is what I want to do:Scan all of the directories and subdirectories in /var/www/ for files with extension of webm.

When a file is found, go to the parent directory and create an html file with the same name as the video, only with an html extension instead of webm.

Automatically enter the following html code into the file with the file name matching the file that was found.

Code:

Is it possible to do this with a script? Is there a GUI program that can do this? I don't mind running the script every time after I convert a movie, but if it could monitor the folders that would be nice.

CentOS 5 :: Can't Get Kdump To Generate Dump Files?

Dec 7, 2010

I'm posting because I've read everything I can find on google and in the forum and the man page and still can't get it to work. I did read the FAQ, I hope I have adhered to it.I've tried several things and I don't remember exactly everything I tried and in what order.I've got several (12) HP ProLiant DL140 G3 servers running CentOS 5 that lockup about once a week. These are in a remote colo cage so I all i have access to is the built-in HP lights-out management interface, which includes a console, and ssh. I've been trying to get kdump setup to try to figure out what's going on. As an aside, if I run top on the console (via the management interface) the servers stay up for about a week, if I don't run top they crash within about 48 hours.I've used yum update to update to the latest available kernel (2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.x86_64) and installed the debuginfo and debuginfo-common RPMs from http://debuginfo.centos.org/5/x86_64/I have a single command in the /etc/kdump.conf file:ext3 /dev/sda5

Ubuntu Networking :: Files Created In Samba Are Locked From Nfs & Vice/versa

Mar 2, 2010

I have just recently setup our network with an Ubuntu server which is being accessed by one Ubuntu workstation with nfs, & one XP workstation with Samba. Following instructions from the web, I set permissions like this:

sudo chmod 777 /media/Data sudo chown -R curley:curley /media/Data The problem is that files created in Samba are locked from nfs & vice/versa. I am assuming I need to add the nfs network share to the Curley group or use something more global than curley to make this work?

Samba is working ok from Ubuntu when browsing through Nautilus, but there is no access to shares when doing things like uploading or downloading files to the web (the "save file" window only shows local folders). So I guess I wouldn't mind just using Samba if I could map a folder in Samba to solve that problem.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Crashing When Reading / Writing Many Small Files?

Mar 18, 2010

Samba seems to crash and come back after some seconds if I copy a lot of small files in a short period of time over the network. How do I fix it?

I have Ubuntu 9.10 Server 64bit running on a D945GCLF2 board sharing two 1TB ext4 formatted HDDs to my Windows PCs using samba. I've been having an issue with reading or writing files through samba. It happens during copying operations or checksumming, anything that reads or writes MANY small files in a small amount of time. I am pretty sure the problem has to do with my server because the server has run on two different LANs in different homes and will crash from activity with any of several other PCs. There is no crashing if I access the files through SSH, although when I do that the max transfer speed is less than 1MB/s.

When I induce the crashing, there is absolutely no output to the server terminal.

As an easy access example of something that will crash samba, extracting Cinebench R11.5 to the server will do the job. It always fails.
