Fedora Installation :: Possible To Update Packages On F12 USB Live?
Jan 4, 2010I installed F12 to a live USB stick. When I boot up the system it says there are several hundred updates available. I've tried to update packages, but when I reboot the updates that claim to have been made do not appear. The system reverts to its original state after reboot.
So is it possible to do this? Can one have persistent packages? (this does seem to work with ubuntu)
Or is F12 on a live USB stick supposed to be pretty much the same thing as having a live (read-only) CD?
What I'd really like to do is have a small version of F12 on a USB stick that has up to date packages I need while dropping the packages I don't need.

Sep 30, 2009I just wanted to upgrade to fedora 11 from the current version 5 with the of a live cd.I dont want to loose the previous configuration files. upgrade everything except the / directory. How do you do that? I also have a retarded WINXP partition on the same drive which I dont wanna loose.

Dec 21, 2010I booted my Fedora 13 live CD on my Dell server, and configured networking and SSHd. On my desktop I logged into the live cd and started copying over a big file (1.5 GB) (i.e. copying from the desktop computer to the server). After copying about half the fil, the download fails with an error message about the filesystem being read-only.I've seen this exact same behavior on both i386 and x86_64 of the same live CD, but don't know why it's happening. I've also had the same issue when copying small files. In /var/log/messages these messages are repeated many times:

Fedora :: Creating Custom Fedora Install/Live Media
Oct 17, 2009I've recent begun to want to create a spin of Fedora for my high school to offer as an alternative to Mac OS X and Windows. My first attempt with any distro was to try and use Suse Studio, however nothing with packages that I downloaded myself would successfully compile. I then thought that I might try and use some sort of local program do create it with and tried Revisor, however when I made Live Media, Xorg wouldn't start and when I made DVD Install Media the kernel would kernel panic every time on boot.
Is there anyway to solve the problem with Revisor or are there any alternatives?
I have also tried using Ubuntu with the Ubuntu Customization Kit however that didn't work either considering I have to have it in a virtual machine.

I am under the impression that live versions of Linux don't mess with the video card since the drivers may not be installed, and so i believe that this has nothing to do with my ATI card. Nov 10, 2009It's two days now I'm in deep troubles after my last "yum update". The system boots as usual, the graphical login pops up the normal way but no input is handled by either the internal keyboard (the system is a laptop), the mouse pad, the external USB mouse and keyboard.
The hardware itself seems to be working as I can pop up the BIOS menus and even edit the GRUB booting line. But, after GRUB there's no possible input. I've tried to boot the system with the Fedora 11 DVD, rescue menu and then chroot. This in order to run a "yum update" in the hope that the problem was in some broken update. No chance: there's no update.
My questions are:
1. Is there a way to boot Fedora withou any graphical interface from GRUB (or anything else to skip the KDE)?
2. Is there a way to have the (cabled) network activated at boot *before* the graphical login?
3. What the he** is happening to my otherwise pefectly working laptop?

Dec 7, 2008When I attempt to boot from the new Fedora 10 Live CD, it comes up with the initial screen, then gives me an error message saying something like, "Error with intranfs/init," and then it drops to bash, which I do not know how to use. I have P4 HT @3 GHZ., 2GB of RAM, a 400GB primary HD split between Windows XP and Mythbuntu 8.10 (dual boot), a 200 MB secondary HD (the primary is SATA, the other IDE), etc. I wanted to try the Live CD before deciding whether to change over to Fedora. I burned the ISO image of the Live CD to a CD-RW myself.

Sep 1, 2010Fedora (2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64) I installed that update, during the installation process it said that it had to remove three packages, one of them was kmod nvidia for the old kernel (Fedora (2.6.33.8-149.fc13.x86_64))After the update finished installing the new kernel, I restarted the system and Nvidia did not load. (I assume because Update manager removed the old nvidia? But I also assumed that a new version would be installed automatically?)I received the following Boot messages:

I'm confused, if Update Manager removed kmod nvidia, then why does yum say it is installed? And why doesn't the new kernel update work with that version? Or should I install a driver version for that particular kernel? I've read while searching that I need to install a kmod-nvidia for that particual kernel version and that I should login to my previous kernel until that happens, is that the problem I'm having?
Why don't rpmfusion and fedoraproject release the kmod-nvidia and kernel updates at the same time to avoid problems such as this? Does anyone know how long does it usually take for rpmfusion to release the new kmod-nvidia driver for the latest kernel?

Jan 28, 2009I have Fedora 10 installed. I've just made an update of my system. Things that were updated were a new kernel version with devel and also something with NVIDIA (which is my video card).
After restart of my system, compiz fusion no longer works.
I have a NVIDIA-Linux-x86-177.82-pkg1.run -file to manually install the NVIDIA-driver so the advanced features of Compiz can be utilized.
After install, the bootup screen tells me that loading the NVIDIA driver has failed. I also receive a WARNING-message.

Mar 13, 2009Using live CD to check out Fedora10 on WindowsVista, IntelPentiumDual E2180, NTFS. Used Power2Go (default program) to burn ISO to CD. Shouldn't be the problem as I used it to download Fedora6 and those work fine. Downloaded and burned twice in case problem was faulty CD. Boot hangs up after initial screen indicates VMlinuz and image are loading, and graphic progress bar runs through. I get blank screen with blinking cursor, I can enter text all I want to. but no response to any commands. When I exit, shut down screen displays messages that look like I was totally running a linux system.
P.S. Found solution in other forum, press esc during progress bar load, now boot hangs up after loading cups.Going to check out boot edit options on wiki.
Fedora Installation :: Live CD Won't Run.
Jun 17, 2009I've been trying to install Fedora 11 all afternoon and have given up. The machine that I am installing on was running Fedora 10 with no problems whatsoever. I tried to install using the regular i386 DVD and it went partially through the install and crashed. I then cleared the hard drive and left two partitions on it (two ext3's). Still no go. Then I reformatted the hard drive, cleared the MBR and turned the machine into a DOS machine. Fedora 11 still wouldn't install.
The Live CD won't run. It errors out with a nouveau error. I saw the sticky concerning that issue. I still maintain that a system which supports nVidia in version 10 should support it in version 11 especially when it's on the list of supported devices (it's a GeForce 3.) I realize that a product can't support hardware indefinitely, but the device I have is on the list, so it should support it.As I type this message, Fedora 10 is installing without a problem. Fortunately, I was smart enough to backup my entire hard drive before starting this fiasco, so I'll be fine when I restore. No harm, no foul I guess.Very disappointing from a distro that I really, really love and want to maintain. I would have thought that the systems people would have put a better effort into the installation program.
