At the top of the keyboard are 5 extra buttons numbered 1 to 5. These are in addition to the function keys.

I ran xev to determine the keycodes generated by these buttons and nothing results. The keys do nothing in xev. How can I enable these keys to use for desktop switching?

Ubuntu :: Is Alt+SysRq+o Shutdown 'clean' With Regard To Disk Buffers?

May 3, 2010

I've been having a bad problem with X freezing up (but not the whole system), and I hate continually performing unclean shutdowns with the power button. Will an Alt+SysRq+o shut down the system in a way that doesn't cause the loss of disk buffers? Obviously, whatever hasn't been saved to the buffer will be lost, but my concern extends to the buffers themselves.ext4 and autofsck make this less of an issue, but I hate the thought of unnecessary silent corruption until the freezing stops.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Magic Set Editor - No File Type Associated

May 25, 2009

I am having trouble getting a certain program to work. It's called Magic Set Editor and it has a linux version. It seems to install fine, but when I press the link to run the program it always says there is no file type associated with this program. Here is the site to download it: [URL]. I've tried the full and reduced versions, and I tried building it from source, which I have no idea how to do. I am using Fedora 10. Also, I've gone to their linux guy and he tried to help, but has never used Fedora, and so nothing he said worked.

General :: F3 - F5 Keys Incorrectly Behaving As Audio Keys / Remap Them To Original Meaning?

Apr 17, 2010

I don't know if this is a configuration issue or a hardware issue, but I have a Kinesis Advantage USB keyboard and for some reason the F3-F5 keys aren't responding as they used to. They don't respond to anything and, when I tried using F5 on Emacs, it said <XF86AudioNext> is undefined, so I guess it's a weird mapping problem.

Any idea how I could remap them to the original meaning?

Fedora :: Importing RPM Fusion Keys?

Jan 22, 2011

I've searched a number of forum posts and have seen similar issues but the specifics are different and I haven't yet found a solution. I'm running Gnome on Fedora 13 and clicked "Install Updates." About 513 packages were set to be installed, but I get an error midway through:

Quote: The GPG keys listed for the "RPM Fusion for Fedora Rawhide - Free" repository are already installed but they are not correct for this package. Check that the correct key URLs are configured for this repository.

I've tried installing RPM Fusion keys and get an error saying they require "system >=15" (Fedora 15, I'm guessing?) and I don't recall ever adding these keys manually myself. Or if so, I can't recall what I did to get them in there.

I've read that some people can solve this by using a "--nogpgcheck" at the command line, but I don't know what the command line equivalent will be for this update. Ideally, I'd like to continue using the GUI updater since it offers all the info about the packages. So my hope would be to:

1. Identify the problem gpg keys
2. Install the right ones
3. Run the installer again and see everything work.

Fedora Installation :: F10 - Yum - Updates - Repositories - And Keys

Feb 8, 2009

I have what I suspect is a frequently encountered problem; indeed it may be an inevitable one. Moreover, I think that I know the solution to the problem. Let me explain.

History:
1. I downloaded f10 from the Fedora site.

2. I burned a DVD.

3. I installed f10 on my laptop using the DVD, and it seems to work correctly.

Symptoms:
4. I ran yum upgrade (as super user), and got the message 'No Packages marked for Update.'

5. I did the same thing for several days and got the same response.

6. I ran yum upgrade a* and got the same response. I thought that the mirror site might balk at large downloads.

Diagnosis:
From what I have read on the web I think the following is what happens.

What I will call the original repository-key system, the one that I downloaded and that is now on my DVD, is limited. It merely concerns the packages that are already on my DVD, and these packages are never changed in the original repository. Therefore, yum is working correctly and will always tell me that 'No Packages marked for Update.'

Cure:
There is a new repository-key system, and with it yum does real updates and upgrades. All I have to do is install the new repository-key system.

THE PROBLEM: ALTHOUGH I HAVE GOOGLED AND SEARCHED A LOT, I CANNOT FIND THE METHOD FOR GETTING AND INSTALLING THE NEW REPOSITORY-KEY SYSTEM IN F10. THERE MUST BE A SIMPLE STANDARDIZED METHOD. WHERE IS IT?

If the above is correct, then anyone who downloads and installs f10 as I did must face this problem.

Fedora Hardware :: Modify Function Keys 'fn'

Nov 11, 2010

Fedora 14
xfce
HP Mini 210

I have just bought a HP Min and installed xfce Fedora 14.

However, I would like to modify the way the function keys are pressed. Currently I have to press the 'fn' key down and then press a function key.

The function keys also have a second action. For example, Brightness up and down, volume control, play, fast forward, mute, wifi, etc.

However, those secondary actions only requires a single click.

As I use my HP for doing a lot of programming using emacs. I need the function keys for compiling, book marking, cleaning, uncommenting, etc. Is slows me down having to click on an extra 'fn' key.

I am wondering if it is possible to change the actual function keys to be a single click instead of having to click on the 'fn' all the time. And change the secondary action volumen, brightness, etc, to using the 'fn'?
