Fedora Security :: Why Is Httpd Allowed To Start Binded To Port That's Not Explicitly Allowed?

May 28, 2010

While reading some papers on securing apache with selinux, I have tried to bind httpd to port 3000 expecting to be blocked by the selinux, since port tcp 3000 isn't on the http_port_t list. However I was able to start the service...

I'm preety sure selinux is enforcing. Also, if I bind httpd to tcp 81 selinux denies the start of the service, as expected!Did I miss something? Why is httpd allowed to start binded to a port that's not explicitly allowed?

Fedora :: Getting Error Message - Can't Hit On Secret Mount Syntax - Make At Least To 1400x1050?

Nov 26, 2010

I am not ready to upgrade my Fedora 13 to 14 yet, but I wanted to test some things in 14. So, using the live CD, I installed Fedora 14 under Virtualbox. But some things are not working and the Virtualbox Help files aren't helping. I have added my Fedora 13 /home/jjj/ folder as a shared folder with the name Home_jjj. The instructions say that in Fedora 14 I must mount it with "mount -t vboxsf share mount_point." So (as root in Fedora 14). I used the command "mount -t ext3 vboxsf Home_jjj /media" but I got an error message. I tried varying the command different ways, but haven't hit on the secret mount syntax. I would really just like to add it to Fedora 14's fstab file to make it auto-mount. I have an external monitor, which Fedora 13 sees, but Fedora 14 cannot see it. The main display for Fedora 13 is 1680x1050. Fedora 14 installed itself with 1024x768 as the max. I tried changing it with xrandr -s, but the only resolutions xrandr will take are 1024x788, 800x600 and 640x480. How can I make it at least, say, 1400x1050?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Exporting Display Between Servers - Getting Error

Jan 20, 2011

I am using Cygwin and Xming server to bring back the display from Linux server to a Windows machine.

I am following the below steps :-
1.Close down all X Servers
2.Run XMing - XLaunch
3.Select Multiple windows
4.Select Start no clients
5.Tick No Access Control box
6.Click Finish
7.X Server starts and you should see icon in tray
8.Run Putty/SSH in Cygwin
9.SSH to server you want to connect to
10.Enter: export DISPLAY=192.168.0.1:0.0 (replace 192.168.0.1 with your IP)
11.Run dbca.

On using similar steps I can bring back the display from some Linux servers, but not from others, can you please let me know what the problem is and what things I need to verify. I am not getting any error, some of the last lines from the message in the log states :-

winProcEstablishConnection - winInitClipboard returned.
winMultiWindowXMsgProc - XOpenDisplay () returned and successfully opened the display.
winClipboardProc - Hello
DetectUnicodeSupport - Windows XP
winClipboardProc - DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0
winInitMultiWindowWM - XOpenDisplay () returned and successfully opened the display.
winClipboardProc - XOpenDisplay () returned and successfully opened the display.

I did a grep X11 /etc/ssh/* the result is as following :-
/etc/ssh/ssh_config:ForwardX11 yes
grep: can't open /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key
grep: can't open /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key
/etc/ssh/sshd_config:# X11 tunneling options
/etc/ssh/sshd_config:X11Forwarding yes
/etc/ssh/sshd_config:X11DisplayOffset 10
/etc/ssh/sshd_config:X11UseLocalhost yes

After the program ran I got this message.

gpg: no default secret key: secret key not available

Apparently, I don't have a default secret key. How do I create one?

Ubuntu Security :: Configuring A New Stored Secret In Seahorse?

Oct 16, 2010

how can I configure a new "stored secret" in Seahorse? Or System > Preferences > Passwords and encryption keys, in a free translation from Brazilian Portuguese "Senhas e chaves de criptografia"? For instance, let's say I want to add a stored secret to be used with Skype: in Seahorse (Ubuntu 10.10), I clicked on Files > New > Stored secret, select the "login" keyring, type "Skype" in the description field and my skype password in the "Password" field and finally click "Add". But when I right-click the new secret > Properties, I can't change or type anything in the "Details" or "Applications" tabs, So, how can I inform Seahorse how, when or with what should it use my secret?

Fedora :: User Shutdown Not Allowed As Shell Does Not Work Using SSH

Oct 1, 2010

I try to shutdown a box running Fedora (fc12, all updates applied) remotely. From various threats I selected the following way that suits best to my needs: I edited the entry for shutdown in /etc/passwd:
shutdown:x:6:0:shutdown:/sbin:/usr/bin/sudo /sbin/shutdown -h +1

Logging in from a tty with shutdown gives the desired result: The computer does the shutdown. Then I tried the same using sshd and plink:
plink -t -l shutdown -pw xxx 10.0.0.123

As a result I get:
Using username "shutdown".
Access denied
Access denied
shutdown@10.0.0.123's password:

The /var/log/secure shows the following entry:
Oct 2 00:40:46 rotgschirr sshd[6841]: User shutdown not allowed because shell /usr/bin/sudo /sbin/shutdown -h +1 does not exist
Oct 2 00:40:46 rotgschirr sshd[6846]: input_userauth_request: invalid user shutdown
Oct 2 00:40:46 rotgschirr unix_chkpwd[6847]: password check failed for user (shutdown)
Oct 2 00:40:46 rotgschirr sshd[6841]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=rotgschirr.totes-gebirge user=shutdown

Oct 2 00:40:50 rotgschirr sshd[6846]: Connection closed by 10.0.0.123

Somehow when using ssh the shell /usr/bin/sudo /sbin/shutdown -h +1 cannot be found.

Fedora Servers :: Samba Doesnt Work In 12 - Not Allowed To Access

Mar 29, 2010

I am fairly new to Fedora or rather use it only for some school exercises I get. I have to setup a Samba server with some basic settings and it doesn't want to work. I first tried it on the Fedora VM I got from school (version 11). It somehow worked, but extremely bad ... the Windows client had to wait for over a minute to get either access or an errormessage, that the server was not found (but when entered the ip in the adressfield on top it worked (with a minute or more to wait)). I tried updating the VM - no improvement. So I decided to download Fedora 12, installed it and the Windows client gains instant access on first glance. But when I try to get access to a specific share, it only tells me, that I am not allowed to access it Oo.

Here is my config:

Code:

I even turned off iptables and Windows firewall.

The funny thing is: I tried exactly the same config on my homeserver (copy and paste), which runs Arch, and it works with no problem. But on Fedora I cant access it from nowhere. Not from WinXP, Win7 or any Linux. Simply won't work.

I dont have any gui on Fedora

General :: F3 - F5 Keys Incorrectly Behaving As Audio Keys / Remap Them To Original Meaning?

Apr 17, 2010

I don't know if this is a configuration issue or a hardware issue, but I have a Kinesis Advantage USB keyboard and for some reason the F3-F5 keys aren't responding as they used to. They don't respond to anything and, when I tried using F5 on Emacs, it said <XF86AudioNext> is undefined, so I guess it's a weird mapping problem.

Any idea how I could remap them to the original meaning?

Programming :: Exporting In A Shell Script?

Nov 26, 2010

I am aware this has probably been covered hundreds of times, so apologies if so. I am fairly new to the linux scripting scene, so again apologies if what I'm saying seems pretty odd and makes no sense. I am attempting to write a script for some Linux Fedora test servers I have set up. For me to change which domain I have this set to point to, I would have previously changed the HOSTS and profile files manually, however I managed to make a script which changes these easily with the use of one command to launch the script. The problem I'm having is getting it to use the "export" command. I am aware this would have to be launched in the parent shell rather than the child and so I made a seperate script which has "export SIP_DOMAIN="test.blah.net" in it and had the first script "source" it. This doesn't work and I've probably done something somewhere that is incredibly stupid.

General :: Exporting Environment Variables In Ubuntu?

Jun 2, 2010

I know many people have asked about environment variables before, but I am having a hard time dealing with these paths while ensuring I don't mess around with the original settings. How would you go about executing these commands in Ubuntu in terms of environment variables?

IMPORTANT NOTICES:

(1) You MUST put
/home/stanley/Downloads/ns-allinone-2.34/otcl-1.13,
/home/stanley/Downloads/ns-allinone-2.34/lib,
into your LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable.

Ubuntu :: Exporting ALL Evolution Address Books?

Mar 26, 2010

Exporting the default evolution address book to a cvs file is relatively simple:"There is an obscure utility called evolution-addressbook-export that does the job. To find it use the locate command on your system as it isn't in your normal path. Mine was located :

/usr/libexec/evolution/2.6/evolution-addressbook-export
to use is simple :
/usr/libexec/evolution/2.6/evolution-addressbook-export --format=csv >contacts.csv"[URL]..

But this ONLY exports contacts from the default address book (Personal address book), not other address books one may have created in evolution. SO HOW SHOULD THE COMMAND BE MODIFIED TO EXPORT ADDITIONAL ADDRESS BOOKS THAT ONE HAS CREATED?Cannot find an answer to this anywhere - most frustrating.
