Hardware :: Loads A Generic Driver ?
Aug 9, 2010I am wondering if linux loads a generic driver, if it cant find a PID/VID match for the device that has been connected. If this is the case.

View 3 RepliesMy gentoo laptop doesn't have a serial port, so I got a usb-serial (RS-232) adapter from ebay. However when I plug it in, the only thing dmesg mentiones is: Code:usb 5-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2I've tried to look for a kernel driver in "make menuconfig" by pressing "/" and typing 232. Nothing about RS-232. Device Drivers -> Character drivers -> Serial drivers has 8250 and UART as a module. Device Drivers -> USB support -> USB serial converter support has in-kernel: USB generic serial driver, and FTDI Single port driver as a module, but it still isn't getting recognized. Is there some module i forgot to enable, or do i have to download a separate module from somewhere?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just recently acquired a PII 333 w/ 160M ram (I know, grossly underpowered for anything by today's standards) but mostly wanted it for internet & to use for printer / scanner & camera stuff. So, while checking it out I tried a few live cd's on it (fedora 10 & a ham version of puppy linux) the puppy worked just fine but the fedora "puked" when it got to the GUI (I had this happen with F11 on another computer) The thing that confuses me is, doesn't fedora's live cd have a basic, generic (like a vga 640 x 480) driver that SHOULD work with any video card & monitor or am I missing something here?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI first went to canon's official support site but I found nothing relevant. So I wondered if there was a "generic" driver for the lbp familly I saw many entries in the list when configuring the printer but none of them were indicating things like lbp familly generic driver or something indicating it shoould handle the lbp7200.
Is someone as ever configured this type of printer ? How he/she did to create the printer queue ?
How do I permanently set my video driver to generic? I have an ATI rage 128 pro video card that I just installed because my onboard video wasn't supported. But it will only work if i go through the recovery and run the session with the generic driver. I've tried to get it to run it permanently through the recovery console, but it won't let me select the option.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am running Kubuntu 10.10 Maverick/Trinity, it has the KDE 3.5.x desktop. Anyway I went to System to add a monitor and being that my NEC LCD monitor isn't listed I installed the generic 1280X1024 driver. I re-booted the computer and it gets to a command line. No errors are given. So, I log in and I still have no errors and it is still in command line waiting? for me to use another command that I have no idea of what it might want. When I had issues (years ago) with Mandriva I was able to type in init 3 and I could work out my bug. I tried that with Buntu and I got bashed, it didn't recognize the command. Other than this the system has been good.

I am looking for a generic vesa driver xorg.conf file that will work with most any 1024x768 monitor.
This is for a network appliance and our field people have many different type of monitors.
This product will mostly be used "headless" but sometimes our field people will plug in a monitor.
The intel driver will not even start x without a monitor plugged in so I found it necessary to go to the vesa driver.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI switched to the generic-pae kernal image, which works great, but update now wants to update both generic and generic-pae.
How can I set it up so that it only uses generic-pae?
If I try to deselect generic in synaptic it just wants to mark it again.
When Ubuntu 10.10 loads I get the above pop-up after logging in.Does anyone know how I would go about finding out what this refers to, or how I could address it?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI suspect the network card but I could be wrong.
Sometimes it doesn't load all of a webpage. In Firefox this results in only some of the page being displayed. In konqueror I get the "Connection to host www.page.invalid is broken" error message. The computer was doing this when running Opensuse 11.3 and continues to do it when running a clean install of Opensuse 11.4. I haven't tried a live CD of Ubuntu or something but that might be worth a go.
I recently got a new hard drive for my notebook, and was playing a little with it taking advantage of the fact that my working system is intact on my old drive. So, I installed Slackware 13.0, and ran slackpkg to get -current. Everything runs fine, except for my wireless network.
With slack13 I was using the broadcom-sta driver (wl module) and it was working perfectly. In -current I can build the wl module, and load it, but it will do nothing. The interface (eth1 in 13.0) is not created, the card is not registered, and actually nothing is logged to /var/log/messages by the wl module itself. When I load it I only get a few lines from a module it loads (ieee something, for wireless cryptography I think), but the WiFi LED is off, and it does not reacts to the keyboard (Fn-F2 is supposed to switch the wifi off and on). Basically it seems like it is actually doing *nothing*, or that maybe there is something I need to do to activate it.
The other option is b43 with b43-fwcutter. I tried it, it worked for a few minutes before dying on me saying that it can't use DMA with my device, and that I need to reconfigure the kernel to use PIO instead. And it also behaved in a weird way. The interface was not created immediately (wlan0) and I had to play with the iwconfig command to bring it up (although I don't actually remember what exactly I did to do it). Also it looks like it takes a few minutes to load the firmware, is not immediate. The third thing i got was rfkill messages in the output of dmesg, reacting to my keyboard (logging stuff like "the radio thinghy is ENABLED or DISABLED) when I tried to bring wifi up, but without actually switching the LED on.
I don't really know what is wrong. I am thinking on building my own kernel with the option b43 suggests, but before I'd like to know why wl is failing. I could very well go back to Slack13, but staying with an old kernel version due to silly hardware issues does not seems like the right choice.
I think I must say as well that the wifi is working flawless with Windows Vista and Slackware 13.
I've heard back and forth about whether the generic ATI drivers in Fedora 11 provides functional 3d support...as of installing F11 (64) i was impressed by the initial capability of the generic drivers but no 3d support as Desktop Effects could not be enabled.( using ATI Radeon HD 2400 ) what are the usual tips and tricks to get 3d functionality in this environment?

I just installed a fresh version of fedora 11, and it went extremely smooth, except for one thing; I opened up firefox and it was at the fedora start page with a google search, i typed text into the search box, hit enter, and got a infamous "This page cannot be displayed" error.I have checked my connection, turned off the firewall, and rebooted the system. The problem still persists. I have no idea what is going on, it says i'm connected, I can do a software update which has to go through the internet connection, but for some reason, firefox doesn't want me to go anywhere besides fedoraproject.org.

View 4 Replies View RelatedHere's a PHP5 script I wrote to do automated backups from my main hard drive, to a separate backup hard drive. I run it overnight using a cron job.I tried to write it so it is clonable and easily modified for making backups of your system. Please take it and modify it to suit your needs. This script will copy the contents of a directory to the backup drive. It creates a unique directory backup name, based on the current time. When there are more thanNUMBER_REQUIRED_BACKUPS in the backed-up directory $BACKUP_GROUPNAME, the oldest backup will be deleted. This allows you to keep n number of the latest backups. You will need to create the $BACKUP_GROUPNAME directory on the backup drive, so the script has somewhere to write the backed-up directories to.PHP Code:

I have a Medion Akoya E1212 netbook (which is an ALDI rebrand of the MSI Wind netbook) and naturally I'm trying to get the longest battery life possible Already running Ubuntu (Lucid) Netbook Edition (though Moblin seems interesting too) and of course keeping a close look at powertop. One of the things powertop can do, is disable unused USB devices [with the 'U' key]. There is, however, one persistent USB device that keeps popping up in powertop's list no matter how often I press 'U': my SD-card drive (which is apparently internally connected via USB). And it appears in the list regardless of whether I have inserted an SD-card in it or not.
When I use Nautilus to navigate to computer://, I can see the SD-card drive as an icon named "USB Generic Multicard", sitting next to my internal harddisk. I can rightclick and "eject" it, causing the icon to disappear, and the entry in powertop's list disappears as well.My question, is there a way to make sure that the "USB Generic Multicard" USB device doesn't mount at all during startup? [Or, preferably that it detects whether an SD card it present (rarely) to decide whether to mount or not].And if anyone knows the command-line command to "eject" the USB Generic Multicard device, that would also be great cause it would save me starting Nautilus every time (which is slow).
