I am new coming to Linux and I started with fedora 15. I need all programs that I need to real start this programs like:
PDF
Open Office
Multimedia Audio and video
Recording
Internet and chat like yahoo messenger in windows
Graphics 3D if find
The basic programs.
Recently I have had a run of random errors on boot up. Finally, the quit button, top right of the screen disappeared permanently. I am convinced it is because I added Evolution to the programs that start automatically when I login to Ubuntu (auto login). Evolution uses the Internet connection which hasn't been successfully established by the time it starts. In the past, this would crash Ubuntu. It seemed to be fixed by this stage, but maybe not. Is there some way of delaying the startup of a program in the automatic startup list - to give the rest of everything time to settle in - before it starts trying to use other startup resources?

I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu 10.10. To access KDE, I want to use
startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits.When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx
When you put in the Fedora disk, it has an option "Install system with basic video driver". What does that mean? If I am not going to download a video driver, is that the better choice?

I have installed Fedora 13 on my system, that went smooth. After restart when I see the License, User creation screen, my normal MS usb Mouse and a MS Keyboard wont work. I have a IR remote which i use to control music >>> image attached. The mouse and kbd on this remote do work. What might be the reason?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed F10 x86_64 on my laptop with the intent of having a few VM guests under qemu/kvm to run test machines for my code while at a week long class. At home, hard wired to the LAN, my DomU's connect the internet just fine. Perhaps not exactly the way i want, but it worked. Now I am at the class and I've had to connect via wireless network. My DomUs CAN resolve URLs to IPs, but I cannot connect to the web to view any basic web pages.

Basically I've just set up a very basic network connecting my vista laptop to fedora 10 laptop via ethernet. I download from the fedora box to an external hd which I can access from both computers. So, my question is, is it possible to have the same video play on both machines, in sync?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just recently acquired a PII 333 w/ 160M ram (I know, grossly underpowered for anything by today's standards) but mostly wanted it for internet & to use for printer / scanner & camera stuff. So, while checking it out I tried a few live cd's on it (fedora 10 & a ham version of puppy linux) the puppy worked just fine but the fedora "puked" when it got to the GUI (I had this happen with F11 on another computer) The thing that confuses me is, doesn't fedora's live cd have a basic, generic (like a vga 640 x 480) driver that SHOULD work with any video card & monitor or am I missing something here?

Ctrl-Alt -F1 doesn't give me a terminal screen nor does Ctrl-Alt-Backspace restart X I must turn off the computer and turn it on again to reboot. Google provides many references going back to April for this string, mostly on Ubuntu related sites. I do have an 128 MB ATI Radeon X300 graphics card but it is over four years old, and I didn't have this problem with earlier versions of Fedora. Also, the google references seem to refer to hibernation, which I am not doing, at least not intentionally. Finally, I see that Xorg configuration has changed significantly since I last checked. (I can't find xorg.conf.) Can anyone refer me to a relatively succinct description of how it now works?

I started a process in a PuTTY session that I want to survive after I've disconnected. I issued a `disown` on the process (forgot to add the -h option). I recently installed Fedora as dual boot with XP on my netbook, but then decided to uninstall it again. I probably did it in the wrong way because everything is messed up. I installed Fedora in a separate partition, so I just deleted that partition. Now when I rebooted my netbook, it starts GRUB.
I get some sort of command prompt like cmd.

I tried several stuff to get everything normal again. First I made a bootable USB which starts the XP Recovery console. Then I used these commands :

I reboot, and there it is again ... the GRUB. How can I get Windows XP working again? I didn't touch the C: boot partition, so the XP installation should still be intact.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was having a job in /etc/event.d. It was working fine upto FC12. With upgrade to Fedora 13, it stopped working . Searching the internet, It looks like /etc/event.d is obsolete and I need to use /etc/init. Also the filename has to have a '.conf' extension. So I have renamed my job as /etc/init/svscan.conf.However, it fails to start automatically on reboot . It works if I manually issue the command % sudo /sbin/initctl emit qmailstartBut fails to start automatically on reboot. Is there anything wrong in my script below ? Let me know if I have missed out anything?

Booted up my machine today and when I started x windows, the first dialog box came up fine and then the gui components turn into garbage characters and I then I lose control of the gui and have to reboot.I'm running Centos 5.5.I'm wondering how to diagnose this. Is this a hardware problem of a configurationproblem? Is there a way I can set the video settings back to default values?

I'd like to configure vsftpd server in a way to allow remote user (local) too see and edit configuration files in their ftp directory starting from dot (like .htaccess, for example). With default configuration + "local_allowed = yes" it does not appear to be possible:user can successfully upload .file but could neither see if it is in directory nor download it.

The multimedia hotkeys (play/pause, stop, volume up/down, volume mute, ecc) stop working when i open any menu (for example mintmenu, that i use, or any menu of firefox like bookmarks) or if i start an application, such as openarena. The major problem is for volumes keys, that stop working in these cases.
Any ideas? I tried to change keyboard model, disable hotkeys mapped in prefereces->keyboard shortcut (with this they just stop working), but nothing changed.
How can I get palimpsest to get authorization to mount partitions when started as a regular user? It works when started from a root session.
Recently my GNOME (bottom) panel started reshuffling items after reboot.
I tried removing the panel, recreating it and placing new items on the panel. After rebooting the PC everything is undone. The panel reshuffles the items (even when the "Lock To Panel" is used). Also the items that are moved to the top panel, after rebooting return to the bottom panel.
Does anyone have a solution for this issue?
