Sep 8, 2011i try to copy file to my pendrive it slow down the machine and when i try to open the other running application like browser it open slowly. My RAM is 2 gb. and Swap is 1.5 gb.

I wish To format it, i tried to format it in GUI mode but i was unable to do so, then i tried to remove the files in pen drive by using rm command but an error msg that the file system has the read only permission so can't be deleted occur, then i tried to remove the read only permission by using chmod command but still the error that the file is read only permission was unable to change.

Oct 15, 2009I just purchased some shares data which came on cd in a zip file.When I try to copy the file from the cd I get a file input/output error.This happens whether I use cp in a terminal or if I try to cut and paste on the desktop.If I try to read it with the archive manager I get a similar error where the archive error complains about missing zipfile directory.I tried opening a couple of pdf files on the same disk and got input error for one and file is damaged for the other.Could this brand new disk be that damaged that it is totally corrupt? I cant see any scratches or anything on it.Any help copying this file to hard disk and unzipping would be appreciated.

The --no-preserve and --preserve seemed to be good candidates, except that they should "and" the mode flags, while what I am looking for is something that will "or" them (add +w mode).
More details: I have to import a repository from GIT to Perforce. I want that all Perforce depot files are Read-Only (that is how Perforce was designed), while all other files that were derived/copied from depot files are writable. Currently if a Makefile tries to copy a Read-Only file then the derived file will also be Read-only. This leads to build-errors when cp tries to overwrite Read-Only file second time. Of course the --force is a workaround here but then the derived file is also Read-Only. Also I do not want to mess with "chmod" after each "cp" command - I will do that only as the last resort.

Mar 13, 2011So here is my situation..i was using win 7 and ubuntu 10.10 in my dell studio 1555. and i wanted to try out debian so i installed debian in my pendrive. so the grub was modified. when the computer starts it shows debian,ubuntu and win7 no problem.. but if i remove the pendrive, nothing comes up. it shows grub rescue>..
so now i cant start up unless i plug in the pendrive. what to do now to solve this problem?? i want to restore my grub to the previos state.

I installed them succesffuly. but when i compile the code it is showing number of errors. actually i hav to copy the libnewt.so file into /usr/lib folder. when i copy tat file it is displaying error as permission denied.
how to copy that file in to that folder. and tell me the stteps to install newt on fdora core 9.

Feb 3, 2011I installed fedora 14 on my Dell studio xps 1645 with CPU intel i7 core inside.
I downloaded the microcode.dat file from the intel website to update the revision of the CPU.
I tried to put it in /etc/ but no update was done. also in /etc/firmware (after creating the latter directory), and no update was done. also in /lib/firmware (after renaming the current microcode.dat file) and no update was done.

Sep 17, 2010I export a folder via NFS service.I able to mount this NFS share in another Linux machine.The folder has many files.The ownership of these files aren't belong to single user. There are more than 10 different users' files in the folder.I am trying to migrate all these files to another folder. When I use "cp -a", the new files' ownership are all reset to the logon user.
Both NFS server and client machine has exactly same copy of users/groups as these 2 machines refer to same LDAP directory service. When use "ls -al" to list the NFS share in client, I can see the files ownership is exactly the same as the NFS server.Is that possible to preserve the ownership of files while doing such migration? The "cp -a" fail to deliver the job.

Jun 14, 2011I have just been bothered by a fairly small issue for some time now. I am trying to search (using find -name) for some .jpg files recursively. This is a Redhat environment with bash.
I get this job done though I need to copy ALL of them and put them in a separate folder BUT I also need to keep the order intact after copying.
For e.g - If I get a JPG file under /home/usr/new/1/ then the destination also needs to be /test/old/new/1/.
At the moment, I am simply putting all files under /test/old/ and I can't somehow get the later /new/1/ folder path created under /test/old/
I understand this could well be done using while OR if else loop, though if someone can just guide me with a hint, I would be really grateful.
I will complete the rest of the steps and was asking here since I am still not comfortable with the shell/bash scripts yet and planning to be really good at it over the next couple of months.

From this file, I need line ~ 1.100 to line ~16.000 (these lines are always the same btw, this may make the solution easier, dunno) to be copy/pasted to another file, where the lines ~500 to ~15.000 (also, every time the same) should be overwritten by the aforementioned lines...I haven't found or come up with anything that works yet, mostly I find solutions to copy everything from one file to another but I can't find something to specifically overwrite a part of a file with part of another.
