Fedora :: Where To Install / Copy The Microcode.dat File To Update The CPU
Feb 3, 2011
I installed fedora 14 on my Dell studio xps 1645 with CPU intel i7 core inside.
I downloaded the microcode.dat file from the intel website to update the revision of the CPU.
I tried to put it in /etc/ but no update was done. also in /etc/firmware (after creating the latter directory), and no update was done. also in /lib/firmware (after renaming the current microcode.dat file) and no update was done.
I recently updated my fc12. before the update all was well but now it takes very long to boot. when i checked the text output by pressing F3 it stops at "Applying Intel CPU microcode update".
Both F15 KDE Live CD and DVD new installs fail on HP 2133 mini notebook. The device has previously accepted F12 installation without a problem. The HP 2133 has a VIA C7 processor. Is this CPU is no longer compatible with Fedora? The syslog repeats endlessly 'microcode: no support for this CPU vendor'. The Live CD will not even begin the install to diskl. The DVD will install but will fail on reboot with the microcode error. How to overcome this installation problem?. Is there a kernel upgrade or microcode update that has already resolved this and how can it be installed?
On startup I get the following message: Code: Applying Intel CPU microcode update: FATAL: Module microcode not found. OK ERROR: Module microcode does not exist in /proc/modules Selfmade Kernel:
Code: [toby@sarah ~]$ cd /usr/src/kernels/linux [toby@sarah linux]$ cat .config | grep -i microcode CONFIG_MICROCODE=y CONFIG_MICROCODE_INTEL=y # CONFIG_MICROCODE_AMD is not set CONFIG_MICROCODE_OLD_INTERFACE=y
Code: [toby@sarah linux]$ rpm -qa | grep -i microcode microcode_ctl-1.17-1.53.fc12.1.x86_64 I found few links, saying that this is a Xen problem but I have no Xen.
Ever since the kernel update to 2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64, my boot process hangs at about startx time. I boot cleanly at runlevel 3 in either this or the previous 2.6.33.8 kernel. If I execute startx from here (in either kernel), the system hangs at the same place. During the early troubleshooting, I read in another thread (250929) about installing xorg-x11-drv-catalyst, which I did using yum. This led to the failure of the 2.6.33 kernel; yum remove did not fix this. I have carefully followed the instructions in the fglrx HOWTO (updated a week ago by Hlingler) as they relate to a PAE kernel (including reinstalling mesa-libGL), and that fixed earlier difficulties. Hence, I felt I needed a new thread.
dmesg tells me Code: microcode: CPU0: patch_level=0x2000032 platform microcode: firmware: requesting amd-ucode/microcode_amd.bin Linux video capture interface: v2.00 piix4_smbus 0000:00:14.0: SMBus Host Controller at 0xb00, revision 0 microcode: CPU1: patch_level=0x2000032 platform microcode: firmware: requesting amd-ucode/microcode_amd.bin microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.00 .....
But the program itself reports Code: # microcode_ctl -h This program is for updating the microcode on Intel processors belonging to the IA32 family - PentiumPro upwards (x86-64 included). It depends on the Linux kernel driver. The website urbanmyth.org/microcode (mentioned by yum info microcode_ctl) clearly indicates that Intel has taken over this microcodecode distribution, and suggests that it is no longer valid for AMD processors.
I found a reference to a kernel configuration flag CONFIG_MICROCODE_AMD (as a plausible subsititute for CONFIG_MICROCODE_INTEL) that possibly belongs in a script in /etc/init.d - but the above context leads me to suspect this is not true any more. In any event, those flags are not mentioned anywhere in my init.d scripts - in fact nowhere in the entire /etc tree. My microcode file exists, and is dated March 23. How do I get it installed? Or is this completely unrelated to my hanging boot problem, as suggested by the "platform microcode" line in the dmesg output? If so, where should I be looking?
I am having some issues installing Kubuntu 10.10 64bit, I have tried two ISO's from different mirrors, multiple writable disks (seriously I had to go buy another 20 pack) and the install halts at the exact same point each time.I have run multiple HDD checking tools using Hirens 9.9 boot CD, I have recreated and formated the partitions twice but still each time the install will stop at 61% stating there was an error copying files and to check the media.
I grabbed the ISO's from Kubuntu.org and the second one from the NZ mirror ftp.citylink.co.nz in the hopes that maybe the image came down corrupt - the disk check before installing cannot find anything wrong yet it still happens ... its very upside down face
I just purchased some shares data which came on cd in a zip file. When I try to copy the file from the cd I get a file input/output error. This happens whether I use cp in a terminal or if I try to cut and paste on the desktop. If I try to read it with the archive manager I get a similar error where the archive error complains about missing zipfile directory.I tried opening a couple of pdf files on the same disk and got input error for one and file is damaged for the other.Could this brand new disk be that damaged that it is totally corrupt? I cant see any scratches or anything on it.Any help copying this file to hard disk and unzipping would be appreciated.
How to copy a Read-Only file in Linux and make the copy writable with a single cp command in Linux (Ubuntu 10.04)? The --no-preserve and --preserve seemed to be good candidates, except that they should "and" the mode flags, while what I am looking for is something that will "or" them (add +w mode).
More details: I have to import a repository from GIT to Perforce. I want that all Perforce depot files are Read-Only (that is how Perforce was designed), while all other files that were derived/copied from depot files are writable. Currently if a Makefile tries to copy a Read-Only file then the derived file will also be Read-only. This leads to build-errors when cp tries to overwrite Read-Only file second time. Of course the --force is a workaround here but then the derived file is also Read-Only. Also I do not want to mess with "chmod" after each "cp" command - I will do that only as the last resort.
i try to copy file to my pendrive it slow down the machine and when i try to open the other running application like browser it open slowly. My RAM is 2 gb. and Swap is 1.5 gb.
I am doing my web radio project. i hav the exact code for the application. It needs sland and newt libraries to be installed. I installed them succesffuly. but when i compile the code it is showing number of errors. actually i hav to copy the libnewt.so file into /usr/lib folder. when i copy tat file it is displaying error as permission denied.
how to copy that file in to that folder. and tell me the stteps to install newt on fdora core 9.
the errors displayed when i compile the code are
[root@localhost newt-0.52.4]# cc -Wall -I/usr/include/slang -D_GNU_SOURCE -g -c -o setup.o setup.c setup.c:4:18: error: newt.h: No such file or directory In file included from setup.c:10: newt_pr.h:20: warning: enum newtFlagsSense declared inside parameter list newt_pr.h:20: warning: its scope is only this definition or declaration, which is probably not what you want
It is recently I tried to put some music into my hand held media player, and not matter what I do, the file will just not gonna copy into the player memory. What I found in the system log is this
has anyone used some software tool for copying a file from one location to another (I mean local files - for example from one folder to another), which prompts if you already have this file, or a similar one...I'm going to use it for my file archive ... mostly for my MP3For example, I might have the folder /home/user/MP3/Heavy Metal/Old/Downloaded/Metallicabut have forgotten that I already have Metallica in this folder and now I want to copy my new music collection to my archive folder which contains for example this folder:MP3/Rock/MetAllicA-Full-DiscographyI need copy files software which will tell me:"You already have folder with similar name to 'MetAllicA-Full-Discography' called 'Metallica', do you want to skip this folder, or copy it to location 'MP3/Heavy Metal/Old/Downloaded/'?"This way I will reduce the file redundancy in my file archive, or at least will keep similar items close to each other ..
I export a folder via NFS service.I able to mount this NFS share in another Linux machine. The folder has many files. The ownership of these files aren't belong to single user. There are more than 10 different users' files in the folder.I am trying to migrate all these files to another folder. When I use "cp -a", the new files' ownership are all reset to the logon user.
Both NFS server and client machine has exactly same copy of users/groups as these 2 machines refer to same LDAP directory service. When use "ls -al" to list the NFS share in client, I can see the files ownership is exactly the same as the NFS server. Is that possible to preserve the ownership of files while doing such migration? The "cp -a" fail to deliver the job.
Why do I always need to write "su" then my password to extract or copy any file in fedora 11. How to configure so that I always be in my root directory.
VLC was behaving weirdly recently and when I've tried to run it with primusrun command (since I have optimus card) it gave me a segmentation fault
Code: Select allVLC media player 2.2.1 Terry Pratchett (Weatherwax) (revision 2.2.1-0-ga425c42) Segmentation fault
I've read on google that issue has been solved by a few people from updating the microcode, but I don't even understand what microcode is, I'm also not sure whether I should install amd64 or intel package for it?
Here is my lscpu
Code: Select all$ lscpu Architecture: x86_64 CPU op-mode(s): 32-bit, 64-bit Byte Order: Little Endian CPU(s): 4 On-line CPU(s) list: 0-3
shell scripting in Fedora14I want a script"Find in curent folder for files, and it copy first file he find with name gived by user, if name already exist then echo error message and finish"command usage " bash scriptname copyASname"
smthing like Code: #!/bin/bash for files in /home/user/* do
Because the version of the microcode installed by the package intel-microcode in Testing (2009-03-30) is way older than the one currently offered by Intel (2010-02-09), I only installed the package microcode.ctl and let it fetch the microcode. However, after reading the Read Me files, manual pages and system logs, and checking the directory where the microcode is stored, I have not been able to find an option to check the version of the microcode in use.
This is the output of update-intel-microcode: Local version: Remote version: could not extract the actual data of remote microcode
I have a 160GB harddrive which I installed a F12, would like to upgrade to a bigger drive, but I hate to have to re-install everything.
Recommend a good disk copy utility? The utility should be able to not only copy files, but boot sector and everything. So I just need to make a copy, change my BIOS to boot from the new drive and run everything as before.
I want to install a software to my computer, I've mounted that server directory, so I can visit them in the x-windows, but I can not install the file as it requires to be root, the help file of that software gives a command for installing to linux system like this:
# /net/....(server name and directory path)/setup
but when i use this command it says wrong, as this is not a recognized path, just wondering is there a similar command in Fedora that I can access to the net directories in terminal?
I downloaded a mouse theme form gnome look and installed it in the themes. But it has not appeared in the pointer themes section in custimation even though it said that it is installed correctly. When I drag the file to install it again it says something along the lines of it cannot copy a directory over a directory.Where can I find where the mouse/pointer theme is located and delete it. I have searched filesystem, google and these forums and not had any luck yet.
I have tried: 1. zcat boot.img.gz > /dev/sde and copy the image file debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso to the usb-stick. 2. and manual whit syslinux /dev/sde1And also various builds of testing and it can't load the image file. always i get the error message "Filed to copy file from cd-rom"And i cant ether install 6,01 Before the image debian stable 6,0 worked and several testing builds before the stable release 6.0.The boot process work flawless but installer can not find the iso according to error msgI have verified the iso file with md5sum and made sure to write out to de stick whit sync. And haven't changed my bios boot that worked before.
I'm trying to install a copy of Postgres using the .bin(I want pg Admin III as well which is why I'm not using apt-get). It's sitting in downloads so I did the following:
$ cd /home/ryan/Downloads $ sudo chmod +x postgresql-9.0.4-1-linux.bin $ ./postgresql-9.0.4-1-linux.bin
but I keep getting: -bash: ./postgresql-9.0.4-1-linux.bin: No such file or directory I did -ls and the file is there and I can't figure out how to get this installed.
I have just been bothered by a fairly small issue for some time now. I am trying to search (using find -name) for some .jpg files recursively. This is a Redhat environment with bash.
I get this job done though I need to copy ALL of them and put them in a separate folder BUT I also need to keep the order intact after copying.
For e.g - If I get a JPG file under /home/usr/new/1/ then the destination also needs to be /test/old/new/1/.
At the moment, I am simply putting all files under /test/old/ and I can't somehow get the later /new/1/ folder path created under /test/old/
I understand this could well be done using while OR if else loop, though if someone can just guide me with a hint, I would be really grateful.
I will complete the rest of the steps and was asking here since I am still not comfortable with the shell/bash scripts yet and planning to be really good at it over the next couple of months.
I have a .txt-file with ~50.000 lines of numbers, generated by a mathematics program. From this file, I need line ~ 1.100 to line ~16.000 (these lines are always the same btw, this may make the solution easier, dunno) to be copy/pasted to another file, where the lines ~500 to ~15.000 (also, every time the same) should be overwritten by the aforementioned lines...I haven't found or come up with anything that works yet, mostly I find solutions to copy everything from one file to another but I can't find something to specifically overwrite a part of a file with part of another.
There is this bug in the latest version of Ubuntu, which is also Jessie, which is:
Can't copy a file from SMB share to the local file system: Software caused connection abort
The problem, apparently, is that newer versions of Samba hit servers with multiple requests at the same time, and for some reason the Zyxel and Iomega boxes can't handle this. The best solution they've come up with is to modify the smb.conf file on your server to include this setting: "max mux = 1".
Here is the reference material on this bug: [URL] ....
People who develop samba have fixed it in the latest version but neither the ubuntu nor Debian have released the fixed version of nautilus, as of yet. Here, is the reference: [URL] ....
I had a situation in which the the path of the file to be copied is written in other file and I had to copy it using shell script..I can use cp $(cat /home/robert/location.txt) /media/sda1 on normal linux shell...But I am using buildroot script where $(cat /home/robert/location.txt) evaluate to nothing..is just blank..
