Fedora :: Can't Copy Zip File From CD
Oct 15, 2009I just purchased some shares data which came on cd in a zip file.When I try to copy the file from the cd I get a file input/output error.This happens whether I use cp in a terminal or if I try to cut and paste on the desktop.If I try to read it with the archive manager I get a similar error where the archive error complains about missing zipfile directory.I tried opening a couple of pdf files on the same disk and got input error for one and file is damaged for the other.Could this brand new disk be that damaged that it is totally corrupt? I cant see any scratches or anything on it.Any help copying this file to hard disk and unzipping would be appreciated.

Feb 3, 2011I installed fedora 14 on my Dell studio xps 1645 with CPU intel i7 core inside.
I downloaded the microcode.dat file from the intel website to update the revision of the CPU.
I tried to put it in /etc/ but no update was done. also in /etc/firmware (after creating the latter directory), and no update was done. also in /lib/firmware (after renaming the current microcode.dat file) and no update was done.

Writing to a USB would be ideal but that hasn't been working since I upgraded to Fedora12.Is there anyway I can mount the image to retrieve the file?wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so mounting as fvat doesn't work either.

Sep 17, 2010I export a folder via NFS service.I able to mount this NFS share in another Linux machine.The folder has many files.The ownership of these files aren't belong to single user. There are more than 10 different users' files in the folder.I am trying to migrate all these files to another folder. When I use "cp -a", the new files' ownership are all reset to the logon user.
Both NFS server and client machine has exactly same copy of users/groups as these 2 machines refer to same LDAP directory service. When use "ls -al" to list the NFS share in client, I can see the files ownership is exactly the same as the NFS server.Is that possible to preserve the ownership of files while doing such migration? The "cp -a" fail to deliver the job.

Feb 14, 2009I am an inexperienced Linux user, I have tried Knoppix and Ubuntu in the past. Since we use Fedora servers at work I have wanted to try Fedora for some time and I tried running it in a virtual machine.My virtual machine is Sun VirtualBox and my OS is Vista Ultimate. Everything worked well until it was time to decide where Fedora is to be installed.Alright, screenshot time yet? This is where I hit the wall, the screen where you select installation drive/partition. The field is greyed out as you can see.
I have prepared a partition, at first I formatted it in FAT32 but because I didn't see it in the installation screen I just re-formatted it in NTFS.Installing with virtual machine should be working? Why is the field grey? What to do? Is it because I have mounted the dowloaded disc image instead of burning it?
I have a 64-bit architecture AMD processor with 2GB RAM and have tried Ubuntu 64-bit in the past, is there a 64-bit version of Fedora and would that be better or worse for me than 32-bit version?

Apr 5, 2010My company's default OS is Windows 7. I convinced my manager so that I could use Fedora 12, since I am mostly familiar with development environment in Fedora. However there are a few things I need in Windows 7, and I want to stop going back and forth in two OS'es in dual boot-up setting.
I've searched online for easy way to use the existing Windows 7 as guest virtual machine. I first tried VMware's Vcenter Converter Standalone in Windows 7, but it failed with some error code, and searching the particular error code didn't turn up any solution. I also tried to use Sun's VirtualBox, but I get segmentation fault error in Fedora. I tried to see if VMware server has a tool, but installation exists with an error, and searching the web for the error code didn't turn up anything either.... I wonder if I am having this much difficulties because I am using x86_64 version of OS'es.
Anyhow, if anyone has done it successfully - using existing Windows 7 as guest virtual machine in x86_64 version of Fedora 12.

Aug 1, 2010How does one access a Virtual Box installed Fedora system? I'd like to be able to ssh into this system (locally) but I've no idea how to do this. There is an ip address of 10.0.2.15. Ping doesn't work (ping 10.0.2.15). Should I just go ahead and assign a 192. address to this box before I go any further? It would seem that at this point the system isn't actually a part of my local network and I don't imagine it would be unless it has a 192 address.

The --no-preserve and --preserve seemed to be good candidates, except that they should "and" the mode flags, while what I am looking for is something that will "or" them (add +w mode).
More details: I have to import a repository from GIT to Perforce. I want that all Perforce depot files are Read-Only (that is how Perforce was designed), while all other files that were derived/copied from depot files are writable. Currently if a Makefile tries to copy a Read-Only file then the derived file will also be Read-only. This leads to build-errors when cp tries to overwrite Read-Only file second time. Of course the --force is a workaround here but then the derived file is also Read-Only. Also I do not want to mess with "chmod" after each "cp" command - I will do that only as the last resort.

When I boot the virtual machine, it gives the boot screen. If I choose the first install/upgrade option, I get console messages but it hangs when it gets to "Trying to unpack rootfs as initfs."

3. How do I use Rsync or cp to copy to the backup folder?
4. How will I know the copy is complete so that I can start the VMs again?

Aug 6, 2011Don't know how to report to bugzilla, but first of all I want to know if it's only my PC or if you have this problem too. Today I started copy a 1.4 GByte from an internal disk (NTFS formatted) to a USB stick. The process is extremely slow (but this isn't a news, it always was with previous Fedora versions), in the meanwhile I tried to start Firefox and I found that it doesn't start: from KDE system monitor I see that Firefox starts loading but it blocks in "waiting for disk". Tried with some other program (Ksnapshot, Filezilla) and they're also extremely slow in loading when copy is active. When putting the copy process in pause, after some time programs starts opening.
