I've a headless custom device that boots from USB using live image. Since I cannot access the device through the network, I need a way to persist boot related log files (dmesg, boot.log, messages) to view them on another computer. I also need to know how can I run custom commands on startup of live image.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade To FC13 - Initial Boot Failed - Just Blank Screen

Sep 19, 2010

I have just upgraded my FC12 installation to FC13. The initial boot failed (just blank screen). Second time I received 'selinux targeted policy relabel is required'. I let that run, but still the boot did not suceed.

I then went in to verbose boot and saw that the boot would hang at libvirtd. So I disabled libvirtd for anything above run level 1. Next boot failed at atd, disabled atd. Next boot failed at 'monthly Smolt checkin'.

At that point and booted in to single user mode and dissabled SELinux, thinking that was the cause of all the problems. That did not help.

The update process has also removed my previous kernels, so I can't test a different kernel

Fedora Installation :: Install Doesn't See Drive On Which Want To Put Fedora12

Nov 18, 2009

I ran the install from the Fedora12 DVD, downloaded via Bit Torrent, so integrity should be OK. The install shell does not see my 3rd harddrive, which is where I want to install. I burned the KDE live version of Fedora12 to run the checks suggested by marcrblevins. The results are below. Fdisk clearly sees sdc, where I want to put Fedora.I tried installing from the live CD, but the install shell was identical to the one from the DVD, so I'm pretty sure they are both good copies. The CD install could not read the 3rd harddisk, either. Ubuntu versions 9.04 and 9.10 installed to this partition without problem.

Fedora Installation :: Failed To Upgrade F13 T64 Bit O F14?

Jul 16, 2011

Today I ran preupgrade and chose Fedora 14 instead of Fedora 15 to be safe to upgrade from 13 . After lengthy upgrade, I wan able to login but after that whenever I try to open terminal and enter su to login as root, it suddenly hangs or sometimes it hangs by itself or even hangs after reboot. So I have totally corrupted upgrade.

I read somewhere and found I can go to GRUB menu at reboot and I can choose fedora 13 from there and was glad at least I can go back to old Fedora 13 but I do have to go to GRUB menu to choose Fedora 13 every i have to reboot. Is this OK? Now in Fedora 13 I have entered command as root: preupgrade and this time I chose Fedora 15. Is this OK? I am hoping the upgrade from 13 to 15 would work.

Fedora Installation :: Fedora12 Picks Up Foreign Swaps During Install

Dec 23, 2009

Installing a F12 on a new 500gb SCSI disk.I had a previous SEPARATE disk with a stable F9 on it including its OWN SWAP space.After installing F12 to boot from the new disk it installed. When rebooted crashed with an Fdisk type problem ... Even though the entire O.S. was supposed to be separately installed on SCSI 500.. After many frustrating hours of why oh why? it appears as though the F12 installation by default grabs any allocated "SWAP" space on any allocated DISK.As an other O.S. had used that SWAP for itself (Which it has every right to do) Why then did F12 pick it up?? and Use it in /etc/fstab...Then crash as a result??

Removing the offending "SWAP" entry from /etc/fstab install solved the problem.But my question remains ?? Why Does F12 install pick up "foreign SWAP space"?

Fedora Installation :: Downgrade F11 To F10 After Failed Upgrade?

Nov 12, 2009

I recently installed Fedora 10, having chosen that version in order to be able to use the packages created by the Planet CCRMA group for doing audio recording (they don't have F11 packages ready yet, AFAIK). Last weekend I got a prompt to upgrade my system, and I naively accepted it, not even realizing that it was an upgrade to F11.

The upgrade didn't work, for reasons that I still don't know (probably a video driver issue), but since I know the F10 installation worked, and Planet CCRMA is not up to F11 yet, I'd just like to downgrade myself back to F10.

Can I just re-install Fedora 10 from the DVD I used before, or will the F11 installation cause problems? I haven't really done any work that I mind losing, so I'm not too concerned about overwriting my previous installation.

General :: Why Upgrade / Install Of TeXLive On Fedora12 Does Not Create Directory

Mar 19, 2010

Does anybody know why the upgrade/install of TeXLive on Fedora12 does not create the directory /usr/local/ texlive/2009.I have seen this directory mentioned for other 2009s, but when I installed 2009 it did not create this. (Or, maybe there was some problem... ?) It is only slightly relevant because (sudo) texhash does not include any /usr/local directories in 2009, only /usr/share.

In my 2007 version I had the usual /usr/local/share/texmf/tex structure in which I place /latex and a /bibtex. I had read/write access and so I placed all my .sty and .bib files, as well as image files and other stuff I shared between projects. Now, I have a ~/texmf with /tex and /bibtex and have gotten rid of /latex subdirectory. Now I don't have to texhash when I add new stuff.Other than this, is there any reason why Fedora TeXLive-2009 would not create /usr/local/texlive ? (Unless this is because, as the wiki page notes , "it is in testing state so bugs could occur."

Fedora X86/64bit :: F12 Kernel Upgrade Failed - Eclipsed?

Dec 8, 2009

The -162 kernel upgrade just released failed to boot in my x86-64 system. Additionally, both previous kernels failed in (probably) the same way. The progress icon proceeded all the way to its 'f' image, and then hung. I touched escape key, and found several disturbing messages among a dozen or so lines --

mdadm: No arrays found in config file or automatically. A dynamic linking error occurred: /lib64/multipath/libcheckdirectio.so: no such file or directory awk: cmd. line:1: fatal: cannot open file `/etc/inittab` for reading (Invalid Argument). Init: rcS post-stop process (807) terminated with status 2s. I got into rescue mode with my install disk, then looked for libcheckdirectio.so in /mnt/sysimage/lib64 but it was not there. Also, locate -d /mnt/sysimage/mlocate/mlocate.db/libcheckdirectio.so found nothing.

Ran chroot and executed the fakd diagnostic (which I had not seen before) and rebooted. Same problem - although now the screen is telling me SELinux is requiring a targeted policy relabel. My dual-boot-to-vista system has been erratic (requiring fsck several times, and confounding the Vista partition to require file checks), primarily since a large install of Eclipse and multiple plug-ins AFAICR.

Fedora :: Fedora 11 Upgrade With LVM Missing /boot Partition?

Oct 14, 2009

I've just (finally!) gotten around to upgrading a couple of machines at a company I do some work for. One machine had a problem when I rebooted onto the new system. During the boot sequence, when it was checking and mounting the filesystems, it was unable to find the /boot partition. Now, this machine does run LVM on all but the /boot partition. The two SATA drives are mirrored, and they have the same partition layout:

Disk /dev/sda: 320.0 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

[code]....

I got the system to boot by commenting out the /boot partition in /etc/fstab, but this is certainly only a temporary solution. The other system that I upgraded came up just fine, as have several of my own. Unfortunately, I am doing these two systems by remote control via ssh as I have only limited plysical access to them. (I did have to get to it to figure out why it didn't boot up..)

Fedora :: Failed Boot With Kernel 2.6.32.11-99 And SW RAID Volumes?

Apr 24, 2010

First post so please excuse my lack of correct terminolgy/understanding/etc. Running Fedora 12 with the following software raid setup...

Mount Device Underlying Partitions
/ /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1
swap /dev/md1 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2
/home /dev/md2 /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3

Recently updated to kernel 2.5.32.11-99 and upon restart, failed to boot. Get stuck at a recovery prompt asking for root password or Ctrl-D to continue (which reboots system). I worked around this problem by reverting to the previous kernel 2.6.32.9-70. From what I can tell, with the newer kernel there is a problem with device enumeration of software raid volumes.

Fedora X86/64bit :: F14 - Lcannot Boot After Failed Suspend

May 4, 2011

Last night I wanted to test the suspend mode on my laptop (Asus K52J) after I had successfully used hibernation mode, which did not work until I installed the latest kernel update. Unfortunately, it didn't go very well. I had to power off the laptop manually. This morning, I booted up Fedora but it didn't go beyond the blue screen with the logo. It just kept hanging there. I rebooted and tried previous kernel configurations but none of them worked. As a matter of fact, I have to write this from Windows.

This is all rather odd since I tried to suspend before and though it never worked, the fact that I had to power off the laptop manually didn't prevent Fedora from booting. I really hate not being able to use Fedora. It's fortunate that I put all my important data on a separate NTFS partition...

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Upgrade Failed & Won't Boot?

Apr 29, 2011

Got a Netbook. No CD drive so mounted image to USB stick and booted into installer from there. Chose the option to upgrade from 10.04 LTS to 11.04 and the installer hung on removing conflicting operating system files. In the end, I was forced to restart as nothing else could be done. Now, it just boots to this:

Quote: error: no argument specified.
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init.
No init found. Try passing init= bootarg.

BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash)Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

I booted to the Live CD and reinstalled Grub which now brings up a list of all the kernels and Memtest but, aside from Memtest, they still all boot to this. I don't have the passphrase for the Home folder (don't even remember encrupting it!) so I tried the ecryptfs method from the live CD to get the passphrase and backup the Home folder and do a new install but there is no trace of .ecryptfs or .Private folder and pretty much everything in the Home folder is locked. Tried an fsck on the hard drive, but nothing. I do remember thinking the hard drive was referred to as hda1, but the live CD shows it as sda1. Don't know if this affects anything. I have a feeling the installer regarded the USB stick as first hard drive and got confused.

Fedora :: Unable To Mount VFS Kernel Panic - Boot Failed

Nov 1, 2010

I am trying to install linux kernel manually, for this I had compiled linux-2.6.36 with minimum drivers and features. Note that ext2, ext3, jffs file system support and sd ata_piix drivers are set as inbuilt kernel modules.

I had two hard disk for my Intel x86 box sda and sdb. I have running linux on sdb from which I can access sda. sda has one partition sda1 as ext3 fs.

I had created following directories at sda1 root, bin, boot, etc, sbin

After compiling kernel, I had copied bzImage, system map files to boot folder. then using 'grub-install' I had installed grub on sda. after installation I edited grub.conf to setup kernel image.

grub.conf

Code:

After this I booted sda by changing HDD boot priorities,And wow I got grub prompt -- linux kernel booted but as soon as it tries to mount file system it dies with error,

I accept that I dont have binaries for init and no initialization stuff in /etc, but I think problem is I am not able to give correct rootfs to kernel.

Ubuntu Installation :: Wont Boot After Failed Upgrade?

Apr 16, 2011

I was running 10.10 and I started to upgrade to 11.04 beta2. And while it was in the middle of applying the updates it shutdown on its own. When I went to boot it back up it originally told me something about the drive is unavailable and asked if i wanted to do an automatic or manual recovery. Neither of those worked so created a live cd of 10.10 and it will boot to that with no problem. I did some research and thought that it may be the grub bootloader so i upgraded that to version 1.98 and now all it does is go to a black screen with the prompt "grub>". So my question is what do i do? I would reinstall 10.10 but I cannot loose any of the data that is on the disk.
