Some time ago I migrated from one hard drive to another one. The old hard drive contained Windows XP and two Linux partitions, a GRUB 2GB partition and an LVM Fedora partition. To migrate, I first partitioned the new drive by hand amd then performed a simple dd copy partition-wise, IIRC. (Well, that was like a few months ago ) Here is the corresponding new fdisk -l:
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders, total 976773168 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
[code]....
Now in GRUB, I have this:
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
And XP wn't boot. All I get is a flashing cursor in the upper left corner and that's it. The same partitioning scheme with the same GRUB line used to boot fine on the old hard drive.
since i have installed the nvidia drivers i have lost the graphical boot and just had a bar at the bottom of the screen instead. i tried to get the graphical screen back by adding vga=795 to my /boot/grub/grub.conf but when i rebooted not only did i not get the graphical boot or the toolbar at bottom.
i got list of all the drivers and services it is starting with ok next to it. i have also since doing this lost the bit when restarting or shutting down getting the words restarting or shutting down and just get blank screen with flashing cursor. i removed the vga=795 and i still get the list of drivers/services loading.
how do i get the quiet option back. i have checked /boot/grub/grub.conf and it has the quiet in it.i have also tried running update-grub but get message command not found. i have attached the grub.conf file
I would like to modify the boot loader settings and triedo open the file grub.confHowever, it is said that the file could not be opened, as seen in the attachment.Tried to authenticate as 'root' before opening the file, but the problem still exist...
I've set up a triple boot xp, vista, and fedora 10. The problem is that I want to remove Fedora grub, so the bios can give me all 3 choices to boot from, be it xp, vista or fedora. At the moment fedora grub boots, from there i am able to choose other operating systems. But I want to use windows boot loader, from there i would like to have windows give me the choice of different OS's to boot from.
I have XP, Win7 Pro and F 11 installed. Before I installed F 11, Win 7 boot mgr was working fine. I then installed F 11 and I went to System/Admin/bootloader to edit it and it wouldn't bring up the boot loader. In the attachment was the error msg. Now my only option when I boot up is F 11.
I do not have access to the Win 7 DVD only the F 11 install disk since I am on a fishing trip and need to use Win 7. How can I repair to the grub boot loader to boot into Win 7?
I just set up a dual boot on a system with fedora 12 and XP. XP in on one hard drive (sda) and Fedora on a second hard drive (sdb).
I installed grub on the Fedora disk so as to not touch the windows disk at all.
Prior to installation, in the bios, I set the Fedora disk (sdb) first in the boot sequence, and then XP (sda) so that the grub loader would boot up by default. (If I set the windows drive first then the system bypasses grub and loads straight into windows.)
My system can now boot up into Fedora fine, but if I select windows from the grub loader menu I just get a blinking cursor - windows will not boot. What do I have to do so that grub can boot into XP?
i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file
did a Fedora 12 installation today but Grub wont boot XP. I had WinXP on the first partition. It's a 40gig hd. 20/20 for both Linux and Windows. XP on the first partition. How do i map XP using Grub
opened the system>administration>bootloader guior anything just opened it)now on boot I get a timeout with an option to go to the grub configuration or boot my one and only installed versionwould really like to get rid of that and go back to booting straight to my only fedora version installed without the option to go to grub (might be useful someday, but now is not the day
I have grub 2. I want to load a file from grub. When list of OS appears when Computer load grub, I want to choose some option and load a file. I want to load a file called sda.mbr which is placed in /sda.mbr I added in grub
Code: title test root /sda.mbr but nothing happend.
I know how to add entries to grub2, (in 40_custome). Problem is how to edit the entries. The commands.
I've installed Fedora 10 on the third partition of an external HDD. It has with the following partitions:
(hd0,0) - GRUB bootloader files [PRIMARY] (hd0,1) - Chainload LILO for another Linux [PRIMARY] (hd0,2) - Fedora 10, no LVM or Swap (labeled F10) [PRIMARY]
I'm trying to boot Fedora 10 using the following grub.conf:
I installed windows and haven't been able to boot to fedora since. Without a boot disk my machine complains 'BOOTMGR is missing'. If I use a boot disk to access grub on another linux partition (/dev/sda5) I can try to boot my fedora install using its old grub.conf settings. However this gives me the grub error:
Code: root (hd0,0) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.29.6-213.fc11.x86_64 ro root=UUID=63608748-e626-4a3f-9232-c836524f606f rhgb quiet
Error 2: Bad file or directory type Darn grub thinks the file system type is ext2fs - this makes me think windows might have written something (perhaps its bootloader) to the first partition rather than the MBR.
I got the grub loader to work finally. The problem is it does not always display at initial boot or a restart. I have seen the selection menu but it doesn't always appear. I have it set to point to windows so that my wife can hit enter when she gets a blank screen.
i have a usb mouse and keyboard and am testing booting without rhgb quiet on the previous kernel version. however the keyboard is not working at this point, which i only noticed just now.
I have fedora 12 installed on a laptop with an LVM partition, /dev/hda5 logiacal partion in the /dev/hda4 one, a boot partition on /dev/hda3 and a FAT on /dev/hda2 for win data. There was also a 10GB free partion left from older works on /dev/hda1. Now the /boot partition was set to only 0,2GB and this conflicts with the kernel updates. I freed the 10GB section, formatted it to ext 4 and copied all stuff from the /boot sector on it. now the old /boot is mounted in the grub.conf on a UUID and not the /dev/hda3 as it comes up on fdisk.
I would now like to swith the boot from the small /dev/hda1 partiotn to the larger /dev/hda3 one, but don't know how to manage it with grub (fedora, i understand it's grub-legacy).
What I like is to install Fedora13,Win7,WinXp, and Musix. One HD 1.5TB Ilike on that is win7 and Fedora13,the other one with 400GB WinXP and Musix. What should I do so I can setup on GRUB. How can I set up like that.
As I attempted to uninstall an MP3 decoder through the command line, I may have also uninstalled the boot loader to Fedora 13. I entered the command to uninstall the program as su - , left for a second, and upon my return I noticed a lot of things were being uninstalled. After canceling the process I turned of my computer and now when I try to start it, my computer freezes after the Fedora icon appears on the blue screen. After looking through the online manuals, I think I uninstalled the GRUB boot loader. I've been trying to reinstall it through the image on the DVD, but it keeps getting stuck on the blue screen. I use a Toshiba satellite with no partitions.
I installed the latest updates earlier today. Instead of restarting I just shut the machine down after updates were installed. now I can't boot into Fedora 12. I booted using the live cd and all my files seem to be in order except there is nothing in the boot folder. Is there anyway to reinstall boot/grub from the live cd? I do have a backup copy of a previous menu.lst.
I'm trying to get FC13 running on a Toshiba SG20 - no keyboard, no monitor. grub.conf and the entry KEYBOARDTYPE=pc and I think that's where it's hanging. Can I say KEYBOARDTYPE=none ? There is nothing, that I can find, even on the gnu-grub site as to options for KBT.
I can attach the drive to my desktop - has screen and keyboard - and the system boots fine. However when I boot on my desktop I get the blue screen with the FC13 logo - semi circle - looks like a top laying on it's side.
I'm using fc14, and put the /boot directory on a standalone partition. Now, there's something changed in MBR, and the grub has been overwrote, now I wants to fix the grub by another bootable usb-disk with grub, to use 'setup (hd1)' to fix it. but the situation cause the /boot has nothing and the partition contain essential files does not under the directory 'boot'. then setup failed.
Slackware is my main desktop, however, I decided to give Fedora 15 a try and overwrote the MBR installing it with grub. Now I want to keep fedora and its grub, just I can't get slackware to boot.Fdisk:
Code: Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders, total 976773168 sectors
Can't get into GRUB to reset root password. Hitting ESC only toggles between verbose boot information and progress screen. Holding SHIFT does not bring up the GRUB screen for Runlevel editing. Only found correct key strokes once and forgot what they are. While I'm here, does anyone know how to choose and permamently select a kernel version for bootup?
I'm experimenting a bit with my fedora, so I need to enter rescue mode very often. Every time I want to enter rescue mode, I need to insert fedora DVD Is there a way to install rescue mode on my hard drive so I could boot into rescue mode from GRUB?
I had installed Ubuntu on my one and only hd. I partitioned with GParted and installed fedora Release 9 Sulphur. i can not boot Ubuntu. I tired some changes to grub.conf but with no luck, namely, 1. title Ubuntu root (hd0,0) chainloader +1 2. title Ubuntu configfile (hd0,0)/boot/grub/menu.lst. this one gives error 15 file not found. Here is my fdisk-l output:
