I installed the latest updates earlier today. Instead of restarting I just shut the machine down after updates were installed. now I can't boot into Fedora 12. I booted using the live cd and all my files seem to be in order except there is nothing in the boot folder. Is there anyway to reinstall boot/grub from the live cd? I do have a backup copy of a previous menu.lst.

Then i boot to win xp and used a partitioning software to take back some other unallocated space. after it rebooted to complete the partitioning processes grub wouldn't load. In drs305's standout article HOWTO: Purge and Reinstall Grub 2 from the Live CD, in the section where it says:

I'm not certain what precisely means "compatible" here? Is it using the same desktop (K/X)Ubuntu what is installed on the hard drive? Or the same release number (such as, in my case 9.10) or both or just ---well, you get the idea I'm sure.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 with file system EXT4 and dual booting with Vista The problem is I am about to reinstall Vista which will overwrite Grub 2 I know how to restore Grub2 with the Live CD I currently I only have a Live CD of Ubuntu 8.04 which doesnt support EXT4 neither Grub2 I am on a very limited INTERNET so I cant download the Live CD. A lot longer than usual, in fact.I then forced a restart on my computer, and noticed that Grub looked different - the resolution was weird.I then tried again to boot ubuntu, and got the following messages:vga=792 is deprecated. Use set gfxpayload=1024x768x24,1024x768 before linux command.mount: mounting /proc/ on /root/proc failed: Input/Output error.And then the computer seems to stay idle forever.Recovery mode is also not useful: I can only see some periodic messages about a failed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED.

I had Kubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP on a Dual Boot. I upgraded using the update manager to 9.10. (I know, I'm a fool.) The Kubuntu install stated freezing hard on startup, just after the GRUB OS selection screen, at a blinking cursor and otherwise blank screen. I'm pretty sure 9.10 will work great from a fresh install, but the live cd freezes after main Kubuntu boot screen and even Windows live cd only shows Windows partition. fixmb, fixboot, bootcfg etc. do NOT replace the grub as desired.

I am running Windows 7 and openSuse 11.3 as a dual-boot system. I had to run a Windows 7 Startup Repair, which apparently reset the Windows boot loader, so now I am not getting Grub. How do I reinstall or reactivate the Grub boot loader? I am assuming I have to use the installation DVD?

I decided to create a Clonezilla image of the ext3 /boot partition from my laptop, as that has exactly the same partition scheme. I've restored that. I realise it may not work but it might save me reinstalling F11 from scratch. How does one reinstall grub in Fedora 11 given that /boot is on a separate partition? i have ubuntu 10.04 64 bit installed and configured and working sweet. I have reinstalled windows 7 and now i can't boot ubuntu i've tried easybcd to add ubuntu to win boot loader which failed and tried to follow the instructions to reinstall grub through a live cd which i am in at the moment. i go to a terminal and type sudo grub and it brings up the grub prompt. i have mounted all discs and entered the command find /boot/grub/stage1 and it keeps spitting this back at me Error 15: File not found
my hd is a 80gb with partions like this
/dev/sda1 105mb ntfs system reserved
/dev/sda2 45gb ntfs win 7 home premium 64 bit
/dev/sda3 34gb ext4 ubuntu 10.04 64 bit
/dev/sda4 1.5gb linux swap
The boot sector somehow got messed up on a friends computer while updating. I used to know how to do it with the old version, but now that they've updated it and changed everything , how do you repair the boot sector from a live-CD with Grub 2?
View 5 Replies View RelatedNaturally, hiding the graphical grub screen on a regular installation is easy, by adding either "timeout 0" or "hiddenmenu" to menu.lst. But on a live boot, there seems to be no menu.lst - at least no accessible one.
Although, in some kiwi image types, you can specify boottimeout="n" in the image description's type element, it does not have the intended effect. Here is an example. The following type element's boottimeout attribute will invoke the first grub menu item instantly. Changing the value to zero, not only does not hide the grub screen, but seems to restore the default 10 second time out.

I have a netbook that dual-boots Win XP and Ubuntu 10.04 and accidentally hit the Win recovery mode in GRUB today, but quickly restarted without formatting or proceeding with any recovery. But upon reboot I just see: error: no such partition. grub rescue>
What I have tried so far: Boot to USB Live Disk... It won't, just goes straight to grub rescue.I do ls and it gives me (hd0) (hd0,4) (hd0,3) (hd0,2) (hd0,1) (fd0) error: fd0 cannot get C/H/S values.
set gives me
prefix=(hd0,5)/boot/grub
root=hd0,5
but if I try to boot it says unknown command so I figured I needed to find the right partition to boot from but I went through all of them with ls (hd0,4)/boot, ls (hd0,3)/boot etc. and every partition comes back "unknown filesystem".
got four partitions, one for media storage, one with ubuntu 9.10 32bit, one with crunchbang lite 9.04 64bit and one swap partition. The partition with ubuntu has been formated from ext4 to fat32 (with nothing on it, obviously). Whenever I boot up the pc now, I get an "unknown filesystem" error and a grub rescue> prompt. When I try to boot up a live usb image from my usb stick I either get a "linux kernel not found" message (crunchbang lite 32bit) or "initial menu has no LABEL entries!" error (gparted live usb) which changes to "Could not find kernel image: vesamenu.c32" after a couple of seconds. save my media partition or, more importantly, my crunchbang lite partition (which has one single important file on it, I'd love to recover). If this is somehow not possible, then I'd at least like to get my system usable again by succesfully booting from usb. I'm fairly new to using linux. I tried some grub-rescue commands, but not even the "help" command worked,

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had 250gb hard disk with dual boot, xp and ubuntu 10.10.Yesterday, i tried to upgarde my ubuntu 10 to 11 from a live cd....b4 doing so, i used a win software EasyBCD to fix the mbr but it didn't work properly..and i ignored it(my biggest mistake)and deleted the ubuntu partion from the windows device manager. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have ubuntu 10.10 running on my HP dv5 pavilion laptop So today i tried to reinstall grub on my pc .. i removed grub-pc and grub-common using synaptic then booted up with a live cd of ubuntu 10.04 i then mounted sda11 to mnt using sudo mount /dev/sda11 /mnt sda11 being my ubuntu directory containing the /boot then i installed grub to it using sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda it reported as installation finished.No error reported then i unmounted /mnt and checked for /boot/grub/grub.cfg seems like the file is missing so are the files in /etc/grub.d/ reinstall my grub back

I installed windows 7 instead of Windows XP i am using earlier. Now i do not like windows 7. My system became very slow. perhaps as my pc is five years old and motherbord configuration may not be matching. Now i want to revert to windows XP. I do not know any method by which i can retain fedora 12 and change from windows 7 to XP. Earlier i formatted complete hard disc and installed fedora 12 (myself) after windows 7 (by professional). but now i do not want to reinstall fedora 12. It will lose all upgradation and installed packages.
