Fedora :: Get The Graphical Screen Back By Adding Vga=795 To /boot/grub/grub.conf

Nov 21, 2009

since i have installed the nvidia drivers i have lost the graphical boot and just had a bar at the bottom of the screen instead. i tried to get the graphical screen back by adding vga=795 to my /boot/grub/grub.conf but when i rebooted not only did i not get the graphical boot or the toolbar at bottom.

i got list of all the drivers and services it is starting with ok next to it. i have also since doing this lost the bit when restarting or shutting down getting the words restarting or shutting down and just get blank screen with flashing cursor. i removed the vga=795 and i still get the list of drivers/services loading.

how do i get the quiet option back. i have checked /boot/grub/grub.conf and it has the quiet in it.i have also tried running update-grub but get message command not found. i have attached the grub.conf file

Red Hat / Fedora :: Remove Fedora Grub So Windows Can Boot First In Triple Boot?

Feb 24, 2009

I've set up a triple boot xp, vista, and fedora 10. The problem is that I want to remove Fedora grub, so the bios can give me all 3 choices to boot from, be it xp, vista or fedora. At the moment fedora grub boots, from there i am able to choose other operating systems. But I want to use windows boot loader, from there i would like to have windows give me the choice of different OS's to boot from.

Fedora Installation :: Repair To The Grub Boot Loader To Boot Into Win 7 ?

Oct 23, 2009

I have XP, Win7 Pro and F 11 installed. Before I installed F 11, Win 7 boot mgr was working fine. I then installed F 11 and I went to System/Admin/bootloader to edit it and it wouldn't bring up the boot loader. In the attachment was the error msg. Now my only option when I boot up is F 11.

I do not have access to the Win 7 DVD only the F 11 install disk since I am on a fishing trip and need to use Win 7. How can I repair to the grub boot loader to boot into Win 7?

Fedora Installation :: Dual Boot With Xp - Grub Can't Boot Into Windows?

Jan 10, 2010

I just set up a dual boot on a system with fedora 12 and XP. XP in on one hard drive (sda) and Fedora on a second hard drive (sdb).

I installed grub on the Fedora disk so as to not touch the windows disk at all.

Prior to installation, in the bios, I set the Fedora disk (sdb) first in the boot sequence, and then XP (sda) so that the grub loader would boot up by default. (If I set the windows drive first then the system bypasses grub and loads straight into windows.)

My system can now boot up into Fedora fine, but if I select windows from the grub loader menu I just get a blinking cursor - windows will not boot. What do I have to do so that grub can boot into XP?

Ubuntu :: Change GRUB Boot Order: No /boot/grub/menu.lst File

Nov 29, 2010

i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

Fedora Installation :: F12 - No Grub On Boot?

I just installed F12 from DVD onto drive D: (C: has windowsXP on it)

EDIT: Forgot to mention that drice C: is SATA, drive D: is IDE
Drive D: doesn't appear in my boot options in bios.

When I boot my PC, it just goes straight to windows without a grub menu.

Is this easily fixed or will I have to re-install?

Fedora :: Windws XP Won't Boot With GRUB

Apr 20, 2011

Some time ago I migrated from one hard drive to another one. The old hard drive contained Windows XP and two Linux partitions, a GRUB 2GB partition and an LVM Fedora partition. To migrate, I first partitioned the new drive by hand amd then performed a simple dd copy partition-wise, IIRC. (Well, that was like a few months ago ) Here is the corresponding new fdisk -l:

Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders, total 976773168 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes

[code]....

Now in GRUB, I have this:

rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

And XP wn't boot. All I get is a flashing cursor in the upper left corner and that's it. The same partitioning scheme with the same GRUB line used to boot fine on the old hard drive.

Fedora :: Unable To Boot - Grub Error

Sep 2, 2009

I installed windows and haven't been able to boot to fedora since. Without a boot disk my machine complains 'BOOTMGR is missing'. If I use a boot disk to access grub on another linux partition (/dev/sda5) I can try to boot my fedora install using its old grub.conf settings. However this gives me the grub error:

Code:
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.29.6-213.fc11.x86_64 ro root=UUID=63608748-e626-4a3f-9232-c836524f606f rhgb quiet

Error 2: Bad file or directory type
Darn grub thinks the file system type is ext2fs - this makes me think windows might have written something (perhaps its bootloader) to the first partition rather than the MBR.

Fedora :: Change Boot Partition With Grub?

Feb 24, 2010

I have fedora 12 installed on a laptop with an LVM partition, /dev/hda5 logiacal partion in the /dev/hda4 one, a boot partition on /dev/hda3 and a FAT on /dev/hda2 for win data. There was also a 10GB free partion left from older works on /dev/hda1. Now the /boot partition was set to only 0,2GB and this conflicts with the kernel updates. I freed the 10GB section, formatted it to ext 4 and copied all stuff from the /boot sector on it. now the old /boot is mounted in the grub.conf on a UUID and not the /dev/hda3 as it comes up on fdisk.

I would now like to swith the boot from the small /dev/hda1 partiotn to the larger /dev/hda3 one, but don't know how to manage it with grub (fedora, i understand it's grub-legacy).

Fedora :: Uninstalled GRUB Boot Loader ?

Aug 30, 2010

As I attempted to uninstall an MP3 decoder through the command line, I may have also uninstalled the boot loader to Fedora 13. I entered the command to uninstall the program as su - , left for a second, and upon my return I noticed a lot of things were being uninstalled. After canceling the process I turned of my computer and now when I try to start it, my computer freezes after the Fedora icon appears on the blue screen. After looking through the online manuals, I think I uninstalled the GRUB boot loader. I've been trying to reinstall it through the image on the DVD, but it keeps getting stuck on the blue screen. I use a Toshiba satellite with no partitions.

I can attach the drive to my desktop - has screen and keyboard - and the system boots fine. However when I boot on my desktop I get the blue screen with the FC13 logo - semi circle - looks like a top laying on it's side.
