SUSE :: Error In Compiling Kernel After Fresh Installation

Oct 21, 2010

I am trying to perform a patch on the current kernel version that was included in SLES SP1 and do a compile of the kernel. However, after installing the new kernel and rebooting, I got a "Waiting for device" error. I tried just compiling the kernel after a fresh installation of SLES SP1 on a physical and virtual machine and got the same problem. When I was doing make rpm, I got errors something like (can't remember but it was something like not in gzip format, file format not recognized and exec format error). Also, what I noticed when performing mkinitrd was that there were errors like the following:

ERROR: modinfo :could not open /var/tmp/kernel-2.6.32.120.7paemod-root/lib/modules/2.6.32.12-0.7-pae-mod/kernel/drivers/char/agp/ali-agp.ko: No such file or directory

The files include others such as amd-k7-agp.ko, ati-agp.ko, efficeon-agp.ko and others. There are also 2 files in the usb direcotry that has this problem. This happened even after a fresh installation. What I did was the following:

cd /usr/src/linux
make cloneconfig
make menuconfig
make rpm
mkinitrd
vim /boot/grub/menu.lst

General :: Compiling Kernel 2.6.32.2 Error

Jan 4, 2010

I'm currently using Fedora 12 with kernel 2.6.31.9 and I was trying to upgrade to 2.6.32.2. These are the steps I followed. After rebooting and choosing this kernel from the Grub menu, I'm just greeted with a black screen with a blinking cursor and it won't proceed beyond that.

These are the commands I issued. I received an error on the first make modules about the mismatch. I then ran CONFIG_DEBUG_SECTION_MISMATCH=y and once finished I ran make modules again and it completed successfully.

Code:
Downloaded kernel package 2.6.32.2 from www.kernel.org
untar archive
make menuconfig (no changes made, saved config file)
make

Fedora :: Getting Error While Cross Compiling Kernel On 14 Host

Feb 9, 2011

I am cross compiling a linux kernel for the mips platform. I have installed the tool chain and everything. When i try to build the kernel i get the following error message.

HOSTCC -static scripts/basic/fixdep
scripts/basic/fixdep.c: In function traps
scripts/basic/fixdep.c:377:2: warning: dereferencing type-punned pointer will break strict-aliasing rules
scripts/basic/fixdep.c:379:4: warning: dereferencing type-punned pointer will break strict-aliasing rules
[Code].....

If i set up the toolchain on a fedora 13 machine with the exact same procedure, the cross compilation works fine. I can't figure out how this can be fixed. I am currently considering downgrading to fedora 13 due to this.

These days, I tried to compile my own kernel. Now, it seems work. However, when the kernel is booting, I always get the error message like below:

It looks that something is wrong with my acpi subsystem's configuration. But no matter How I reconfig it, this message still occurs.

Ubuntu Installation :: Stuck Compiling Kernel Using Localmodconfig

Jun 13, 2011

I'm about to compile a custom kernel using localmodconfig using the guide on this page. Everything's gone well but now I'm stuck. Can anyone work out what the syntax of the part in bold below is supposed to be? I have tried all combinations, e.g. linux-source-2.6.35-Myimage, and a few other permutations. Nothing seems to work.

Ubuntu kernels build with debugging information on, which makes the resulting kernel modules (*.ko files) much larger than they would otherwise be. To turn this off, go into the config's "Kernel hacking"<!-- ; then, under "Kernel debugging", --> and turn OFF "Compile the kernel with debug info".I've hit a few brick walls on the way but they turned out to be wet cardboard.

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Upgrade Errors After Fresh Install?

Jul 23, 2010

I just activated backports and partners and I got it.

-------------------

I just bought a newish asus x83vm-x2 and am dual-booting seven and lucid lynx. On my last two computers I had migrated completely to Ubuntu, but windows 7 has a few compelling features...Anyways- I'm having issues upgrading the kernel on my fresh install of ubuntu (not that it matters, but I installed via jump drive). In update manager, the kernel upgrades are grayed out.

In synaptic, I get these (current kernel version is 2.6.32.21.22 btw)-

Code:
linux-generic:
Depends: linux-image-generic (=2.6.32.24.25) but 2.6.32.21.22 is to be installed
linux-image-generic:[code]....

It appears as thought "linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic" is not in the repository... but if that were the case, you'd think that my machine would just auto-update to an earlier version. IDK- I'm confuddled.

OpenSUSE :: Suse 11.3 VirtualBox 3.2.8 Kernel Driver Not Installed Error - 908

Oct 9, 2010

I can see this error occurring in multiple past versions of suse. The answer seems to involve recompiling the open source version of VBox, but this is surely overkill. Isn't there a way to either a)get the right kernel version of VBox for 11.3 or b)set whatever permissions are required.

In all the answer so far I can't see a solution I can understand for these combinations, sues 11.3 and VBox 3.2.8. The error is consistent, and if the install doesn't work properly (it took my a few attempts even to install it without error messages) then surely its an issue either for Oracle or Suse? It runs ok but hwen trying to fire up a newly created XP VM this error message occurs trying to switch from W764bit to suse11.3 64bit

Installation :: Grub Error 17 After Fresh Install

Jan 27, 2010

I have an odd problem. I custom-built a workstation:
MSI Speedster 1 mobo
2x Opteron 2352
4x DDR2 ECC 4GB
3x 150GB WD Raptor, hardware RAID 0
1x 2TB WD Green, standalone

I had Linux Mint 8 installed, but before putting the machine to real use decided to toss Windows 7 on there to see how it worked. Now I am attempting to put Mint 8 back on to get everything set up. There have been no hardware changes since I had Mint installed before.

I can successfully install, but when I reboot I get a Grub error 17. The partition table looks like:
50GB / ext4
400GB /home ext4
...
2TB /backup /ext3

Grub is installed to (hd0), which is the 450GB hardware RAID. It does not make a difference when I run the installation (and then reboot) with the 2TB drive disconnected. Thinking maybe the new ext4 format was messing with Grub, I tried:
200MB /boot ext2
50GB / ext4
400GB /home ext4
And installed again and rebooted. No dice. I'd guess Grub has issues recognizing the hardware raid, except it worked before

Fedora :: Trashed Fresh F12 X64 Installation - USB Error Message

Mar 1, 2010

This, in conjunction with the "If nouveau refuses to die try" instructions, has now apparently basically trashed my fresh Fedora 12 x64 installation, which I had just set up. Another couple of hours gone to waste. I installed the package that Nokia offers as leigh123linux's build instructions last rpmbuild command persistently gave errors, restarted and was left with Nouveau showing some cryptic error message and finally being presented with only the console. Then I did the "if nouveau refuses to die try" part, foolishly figuring the nVidia driver might take over. Now I am left with watching Fedora's legacy boot animation (the loading bar) and then but one USB error message, nothing else. Looks like I'll be stuck with W7 for another while.

With Mac OSX, then to install Ubuntu. How can I go about installing Ubuntu on my Macbook without getting the sync error, and screwing up my partitions. Yes I read the user guide, and yes.. /bin/bash: line 20: --with-rlm_sql_postgresql_include_dir=/usr/include/postgresql: No such file or directory

The directories named DO exist. The line numbers make no sense. A script error, perhaps? Or, a badly worded error message that actually means something else?

Programming :: Fortran OpenMPI-1.4.1 Installation / Compiling - Error Message Saying Mpif Not Recognized Command

Feb 4, 2010

I've installed openMPI-1.4.1 on my laptop and I'm trying to compile some fortran code I've written using MPI. I downloaded the openMPI-1.4.1 file from the openMPI website and used the shell script they provide to install it. This is the shell script:

shell$ cd openmpi-1.4.1
shell$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local
shell$ make all install

There was an additional line extracting the tar file, but I did this by hand. The first time I ran this script there was an error on the final stage saying that a directory couldn't be created because of lack of permission. I decided to run the script again this time as a sudo.

Having run the script again everything appeared to install properly, however when I went to compile some fairly simple code I got a message saying that the compiler couldn't find MPI. I was using this command: gfortran messages.f90 -o messages I looked on the openMPI website where it recommends compiling with a compiler called mpif. However when I type mpif messages.f90 -o messages I get an error message saying mpif isn't a recognized command......

I've tried to compile gtk 1.2 and above on 11.3 but since it is a 64bit system it do not comply with my request.Output from glib-1.2.2 and 1.2.10

If anyone could give me a tip on how to compile the old 32bit gtk libs on a brand new 64bit system would be much appreciated. Or if there is an even simpler way please tell i.e if there is any repos hosting what i need. Greets
