General :: Skype Auto Closing - Froze / Crash?
May 26, 2011
Any time i try to open skype it closes out fully in 5 seconds (not even in the processes anymore). I don't know why or how OR how to make it stop being so mean to me! i'm running ubuntu 10.4 32bit . I tried to boot it in safe mode and umm.. it froze? or crashed? well it was on the black screen with the blinking dot for like 20 mins before i gave up on it (Hiting enter or esc or anything didn't work). There was a key symbol on my panel before skype acted up(It closed and disabled something.. i've never seen it before). Adobe also crashed, and linux did a small update (nothing with skype).

I have a Debian Sid x86_64 installation on my laptop. I used to use skype a lot when I was on ArchLinux in chrooted 32bit environment. Nowdays, I tried running skype straight on the 64bit environment, when I finally got it running, I couldn't get into sound settings, it froze right when I clicked the Sound options... So I decided to make the 32 bit environment, so I used debootstrap and schroot and now I have fully functional 32bit chrooted system. It does the same thing all over again! it drives me crazy... I should probably tell you, I use pulseaudio. This makes it a little hard to like the distro for me... I used to be an ArchLinux user for quite few years, but I didn't want to solve so many things every day, so I went with debian

Last week I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 to a 8.10. While my ever so loyal machine was performing this business, I started my diner, once in a while having a quick look at how things were going. And they were going fine. The last thing I noticed on the screen was that upgrading was at about 3 minutes from finishing, and when I got back to my PC I was confronted with a black screen. Later on I found out that the reason for the crash was a malfunctioning USB-hub in which my mouse was located.
Anyway, I couldn't get my Ubuntu running, the only thing I got to do was reach the log-in screen, enter my username and password, after which the screen froze. Typing CTRL+ALT+F1 gave me a terminal window, but I had no clue what to go looking for or where/how I could find it.
In the mean time I re-partitioned the HD (75GB), placed the old Ubuntu on a 30GB partition and gave the other 45GB to a new partition on which I re-installed my Ubuntu 8.04. Working from that partition I was able to find out that the old version had indeed upgraded to 8.10 but was missing the <gnome-power-manager> file.
My question now: If I can in any way restore that missing file or point me out some kind of tutorial where I can learn how to do it?
Untill now I have been looking through about a few hundred tutorials, but most of them are written by people who know the terminal inside-out, and frankly are not really easily understandable for newbies.
The fact is: in that old version I have many maps and files which I would like to save (yes, you are completely right: I should have saved them in the first place!) but some of them are for some reason write-protected and I do not know how to get root-priviliges to un-lock them.

I am using CentOS5.2 and gnome 2.16, sometimes (not very often) when I open something and close it by clicking the CROSS on the top-right corner. The application crash and I lose all control (no keyboard anymore), I have to reboot the system by reset the machine. What's going on?
Yesterday, when I logon as root and run service setup, after I uncheck a sevice in the list and then start it, I click the CROSS on the top-right corner of the window, it popup a window (in the background) to ask me to save it or not, but then I total lose the control, no mouse, no keyboard. I try to reset the machine many times, but everytime when I repeat the same operation, it crash again. Seems that if I don't close it, everything would be fine!!!!

For the past 3 days skype has been giving me problems for some reason. I start it, the sign in screen shows up and like 5 seconds later it closes, I check if the process is still running but it's not so it just shuts down. I've tried uninstalling it from synaptic package manager, then installing it again and it's still doing me this.

I've made custom launchers for programs that can only run in terminal. They open fine within the Terminal window, but it closes right after the program is finished, before I can read the report.
Is there a way to keep the Terminal window open, using launchers? I don't want to manually type the commands after opening a Terminal.

I've wondered for years how it works and how I can change it. For example, opening a document with vim, or opening a man page, and then exiting out of it will sometimes (depending on the distro) clear the screen and leave your prompt at the very top. other times, it leaves the contents of whatever you had open on-screen and your prompt is at the bottom.

I'm running Xubuntu 11.04 with Skype 2.2 (although the problem presents in 2.1 as well). I've found that when I'm in a call with another person, and BOTH of us are using our webcams, Skype will randomly crash the entire system and force me to hardboot. I say randomly because A) it doesn't always happen, and B) it happens at random intervals. Sometimes as quickly as a few seconds, and sometimes several minutes. The crash appears differently each time. Sometimes the entire screen just freezes, sometimes it goes black with a white cursor, sometimes it goes to a CLI with what appears to be a kernel panic, and one time it even causes a CLI with what appeared to be flashing/scrolling text. I've check syslog and kern.log, as well as Xorg.0.log.

i just found out (late i know) that the knew skype beta 2 now comes with the awesome screen-sharing feature that skype for mac and skype for win comes with..so i uninstalled the old skype and installed the new beta version with lightning quickness to try that out.. (and show off my compiz effects to all my friends lol!!)anyway, it seems to only work halfway for me. sharing the FULL screen will cause my skype app to crash and close instantly. but sharing a screen selection works just fine... even though i can't resize the screen selecting area.. but it's not that big a deal for me.

I can get my Plantronics USB headset to work with Skype. So far so good.
However if I plug the headset in to use with skype, I have to go to sound preferences to get the usb headset to be the selected audio device. It is automatically detected but is not selected.
Is there a way to have ubuntu netbook remix automatically select the usb headset as soon as it is detected after being plugged in?
Win7 behaves this way and my wife is used to it. Visiting the sound preferences every time the headset is plugged in won't do. Answering a call in Skype requires that the headset be selected straight away. Leaving it plugged in all the time isn't convenient either.
ASUS EeePC 900
Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10, recently updated.
Don't want to have to resort to installing Win7 again.

I am working on the newest version of Ubuntu Linux on VirtualBox under a 64-bit Windows 7 host. When I was working, VirtualBox froze, and I hadn't saved my work in Ubuntu. What should I do?
(This happened after I installed the extension pack for USB 2.0 and I went ahead and tried to access a USB port. I suspect that this led to my current situation.)

I have been using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS for several months and recently the system has stopped closing down cleanly. It starts okay and runs just fine, but when I come to closing down it doesn't do anything after I've clicked on the shut down button. The same happens with the restart button. I have been closing the system by pressing the power button on the front of my tower. I have no idea as to why it won't close ... I haven't installed any extra software, so I guess it's a system problem. Closing down by pressing the power button cannot be doing the OS any good, so I could do with a fix ASAP on this one.

I recently purchased a dedicated server and have been having trouble with putty. I have been using the server to try and host the game called minecraft. Hosting the server is not a problem however. What is the problem is being able to exit putty without stopping the server. I looked this up, and it sayed to create a screen. I did that after installing screen. I then created a screen, ran the server, then tried to disconnect using the ctr-a-d.However only two things happen when i push the buttons. The majority of the time the window just closes, along with my server stopping. The other thing that happens is putty just stops. I cant type in anything, but I am still notified when I try to close putty.

I want to close an open port which is in listening mode between my client and server application. Is there any manual command line option in Linux to close a port ??NOTE: I came to know that "only the application which owns the connected socket should close it, which will happen when the application terminates."I dont understand why it is only possible by the application which opens it ... But still eager to know if there is any another way to do it ??

I'm wondering if there is any way to execute a program, run some command or anything else when closing the laptop's lid.
My question aims to be generic, both for Windows and Linux. Something useful should be locking the laptop when closing the lid (Win + L in windows), or running expensive processes such as antivirus analysis etc. without doing it manually before closing the lid.
