Fedora :: PC Locks Up - Switching Off Only Way To Recover It

Aug 7, 2011

I'm running Fedora 15 64bit on a HP Elitebook 8740w. I have both Gnome and XFCE installed, and have only noticed this problem while using XFCE, but that may just be because I am using XFCE more than Gnome (that's another story - which I won't go into!). Anyhow, twice in the past 3 days I've been in the middle of using the PC, and it has "locked up". By that I mean, using the keyboard and mouse have no effect. The display does not change, moving the mouse does not move the cursor from it's current position. And keyboard commands seem to have no effect (I've tried ctrl-alt-backspace, ctrl-alt-delete, and alt-F1, alt-F2, etc.). The only way I can continue using the computer is to hold in the power button until it powers off.

I suspect, but can't be sure, that it may only be a problem while I'm in XFCE. The reason I say this is that the first time it happened, I was trying to do a screen capture using The Gimp while in XFCE. Today I also tried to do another screen capture (again whilst in XFCE), and X kicked me out back to the login prompt. I then logged into Gnome and was able to successfully do the screen capture. Later in the day I was using XFCE and programming in SpringSource Tool Suite, when the "lock up" occurred again, requiring me to switch the PC off again. I've had a bit of a look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and it finishes like this. I'm not sure if it is enough info to track down the problem though?

Ubuntu :: Switching Between Users Locks Up Computer - 10.04 And 10.10

Oct 15, 2010

Since upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04, the "Switch User" functionality no longer works. I had hoped that upgrading to 10.10 might resolve the issue, but no joy. I am using 32bit Ubuntu 10.10 on a Levono R51 laptop, with three users. 9.10 was installed from a LiveCD, and I have partitioned the hard drive so that OS is in the first partition, and the three home directories are in the second partition (just in case I need to do a complete re-installation from LiveCD). Most of time only one person uses the laptop, but if a second person tries to switch from the current session and log in, they are greeted with the following;

-- a black horizontal line (approx top quarter of the screen)
-- a purple background with the Ubuntu title and 5 red dots (lower 3/4 of screen) -- but no login screen
-- moving the mouse renders a white box (approx 1x1 inches) with some black marks

The original user can recover their session with Ctrl-Alt-F7, but this essentially makes the laptop only usable for one person (one active login) unless the original user logs off.

Debian Multimedia :: Password Prompt Locks All App-switching In Gnome

May 5, 2015

I often need to login into various accounts. In Debian 7 I always was able to copy and paste passwords from text files if I was asked for an input, but now the textfield for password input locks the whole system and I can't do anything else before I have supplied the password. Is there any way of restoring the old behaviour to make password input forms (like the request for GPG key passwords in Evolution) just being an addintional app-window instead of an input request, that locks everything else? I want to be able to open the proper file with the login data when prompted for it.

I know I could theoretically solve this issue by using a general system wide main key which would supply all individual login data, but I want to memorize some often needed phrases by actually typing them when I need them. I just want the possibility to open text files for copy and paste when I'm prompted for a password if this is something I don't even want to remember.

Fedora Networking :: Fedora Locks Up Connecting By Wireless To OpenWRT Router

Nov 16, 2009

I dual boot Windows/Fedora 11 on my Dell Latitude D830 laptop, which has an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG card and I have just bought a Linksys WRT160NL wireless router. I am currently trying to set up OpenWRT linux on the router. Because of the nature of my problem I have also posted this on their forum.I am having trouble connecting to my OpenWRT install via Fedora. Things seem okay in Windows, but when I try to connect from linux my laptop locks up completely and I have to hard reboot. I previously have never had any trouble connecting to any other router with this install of Fedora.

Fedora Installation :: 12 Install Locks Up?

Feb 26, 2010

I have installed Fedora 12 from the DVD with no apparent issues. It then had me reboot. The color bar goes all the way across the bottom of the screen and Fedora 12 turns white. The screen goes blank and the light is on for the floppy disk. Keyboard does not function and my LCD monitor says no input signal. If I hit esc key while it is trying to boot I see a lot of things being loaded but it is to fast to read what happens last.---------- Post added at 07:31 PM CST ---------- Previous post was at 09:44 AM CST ----------By searching the forum I found that by hitting esc repeatedly I can get to the Grub menu. Once there I edited the command line and added a 3 at the end of the line.I am now logged in as Root.

Fedora Installation :: 12 - Splash Screen Locks Up ?

Jan 9, 2010

I have a Dell Latitude E5500. For some time I've been installing different distros on it to find which is best suited for my needs. I've tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mandriva, openSuSE, Fedora, and several others. So far, openSuSE takes the cake in terms of what I need, speed, usability, etc. However, I have a soft spot for Fedora and I'm trying so hard to make things work, but I'm kind of at the end of the road unless you guys have some suggestions.

I was in the IRC chat for Fedora asking around, and one user was kind enough to point me in this direction, which made sense as to why I was having issues.

[url]

I was having mixed results, but I had also installed from a Fedora KDE LiveCD. I decided I'd try the full DVD release of Fedora 12 64 bit, so I installed it this evening.

To my disappointment, even the nomodeset parameter does nothing. I get to the blue screen where there's some kind of logo in the center that fills in with white. After it fills in, an F appears. That's where it stops. It just goes no further. Further adding to the confusion is the fact that the fix lists a kernel there, indicating (to me at least) that the kernel listed is when a fix was deployed. I have a newer kernel than that, and despite that I still have these issues.

So needless to say, I'm using my laptop as testing grounds to plop a different distro than Ubuntu on my laptop and 2 servers full time. I really want to make Fedora work, but at the same time I have to use what works for me. Not being able to boot and log in is kind of a big deal. :P

Is there anything I can do or try? I want to keep the OS's I run all the same, so if Fedora 12 bombs out on this laptop, it has no chance on the other servers I plan to run at work. So far openSuSE is running without a hitch but I'd really like to give Fedora 12 a chance....

Fedora X86/64bit :: Mouse Button Locks

Sep 30, 2010

I downloaded Fedora 13 (x86_64) just two or three days ago, and installed it in VMWare Workstation. The problem that I am having is that the OS will randomly think that I am holding down the left mouse button, which I am clearly not. I only installed the base system (development pack), and did not add any of ther other repositories. I would really like to be able to use Fedora 13, and not just have it sitting there on my HDD, and also use it as a server operating system (because of the configuration tools)

Fedora :: Screen Locks Up During Graphical Boot After Update?

Jan 5, 2010

After a recent "yum update", my laptop screen locks up during graphical boot. I use rhgb on the kernel line. The container on the screen fills up with charge and then the screen locks. I have to use the power button to reboot. If I press ESC when the boot splash appears (i.e., boot in text mode), it works.

If I set plymouth to "details" mode using
$ plymouth-set-default-theme details --rebuild-initrd
It boots up correctly. This is equivalent to a text boot screen. I doubt whether it is a video driver problem. I reinstalled the nvidia driver and it is working. I also reinstalled plymouth and plymouth-themes-*.

Fedora :: 12 - Freezing - Entire Machine Locks Up - Unable To Do Anything

May 31, 2010

I experienced freeze with Fedora 12. I haven't had any issues up until now at all with stability in Fedora. Since then the problem has persisted with a freeze about once a week and then over the last few days it has started freezing daily. I thought at first that it was a problem with an update and that it would get sorted out with another update but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I installed FC12 within days of it's release and I've had no issues until now.

The odd thing is that the machine only freezes when I'm not using it. I suppose this is a good thing, but it makes it harder to figure out what is causing it.

The entire machine locks up and I'm unable to do anything but use the reset button and get the machine going again. I can not connect via SSH either as all network connections are being refused.

I have looked through the logs and can not find anything odd. There are no kernel panics and there are no Xorg errors.

I'm starting to wonder if this is a hardware issue, but the system drive was just installed in November and hasn't reported any errors when I check it.

Fedora :: Gnome: Screen Dims And Locks Up Processes?

Jun 8, 2010

This is a bit complicated to discribe because I don't know the cause, but this problem has been happening for some time (over a few years and generations of kernals), with different Gnome distributions, including Ubuntu (and family) and Fedora. When using Gnome (and only Gnome), I frequently see the screen dim. At the same time, all processes will be locked up. This may happen for a second or two, or it make require a reboot. The mouse can usually move and the underlying program GUIs are still visible, it's just that one or more of the GUIs will be dimmed. This is usually most noticeable with a browser, but that may just be a coincidence.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Kernel-headers Locks Up Server / Sort It?

Mar 17, 2010

Last night at 1:47 AM yum installed the current version of kernel-headers on my RHEL5 server:

Mar 17 01:47:47 linux1 yum: Updated: kernel-headers-2.6.18-164.15.1.el5.i386
Mar 17 13:47:22 linux1 syslogd 1.4.1: restart.

This locked the server up until I could physically get to it this afternoon and reboot the server. I then finished downloading and installing the new kernel, rebooted again, and the server appears to be running fine.

This is the second time this has happened on this server.

Has anyone else seen this problem when you setup yum to automatically update your servers? Other than manually updating servers, does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep this problem from happening again?

Fedora Security :: Mouse Pointer Locks In SELinux Sandbox Window?

May 29, 2011

Running firefox in a SELinux sandbox - periodically the mouse refuses to leave the sandbox (i.e., gets stuck in the browser, refusing to traverse across the window border onto the desktop). This usually happens once in a while, though periodically once every 15 mins or so - no particular pattern, no pattern in the websites visited either.

The setup is as follows:

- Fedora 15 with a bare metal X install (TWM, desktop locked down ala a kiosk install - I will try a different wm to see if that makes any difference at some point)

- VPN (having been through a few VPN providers not all are equal, and this is a pretty good one, running OpenVPN at the mo. - I will try L2TP when I get round to it)

- Firewall locked down to the max.

- As far as reasonably can be done, no direct access to the machine - the install at least in theory is untainted

Does anyone know of a SELinux forum? Can't see anything myself or at least in the first instance.

I'm assuming this is a MITM problem - largely 'cos I have crime sitting on my (Internet) ass. Same problem with SL6 also, so not Fedora specific. I shall put the security spin into a VM and develop my network engineer skills at some point!

Fedora Installation :: NVIDIA Quadro FX And 10 - System Always Locks Up During The 'Anacron' Testing Sequence

Feb 18, 2009

I recently purchased a Quadro FX 4800 and tried to install it on Fedora 10. During the installation, Fedora didn't recognize my new graphics card and began installing the OS in text mode. I stopped the installation and tried to start over, this time I passed the following command: linux resolution=1024x768. I then proceeded with the installation, and again, I was posed with a text mode installation. I continued with the text mode install and when Fedora was done installing, I rebooted and system just locked up.

At this point I was frustrated, so I reinstalled my old 8800 graphics card and started a new install with something that worked in the past. When the install was done, I loaded the latest NVIDIA drivers and the rebooted. I reinstalled my new graphics card (Quadro FX 4800) then powered up my system. I thought everything was good to go and all of a sudden my system flickered and then locked up during the 'Anacron' testing phase. I then rebooted with the "Ctrl+Alt+Del" hotkeys, but my system always locks up during the 'Anacron' testing sequence. I am aware that the Quadro FX 4800 is a few months old, but how can I get it to work in linux? It has gotten so bad, that I had to resort to using MS Vista.

System specs:
Intel Core Duo Quad Core
4 gigs DDR2
SATA RAID 0
Mobo: 680i SLI
