Fedora :: Can't Even Log Out Or Shutdown Without Switching To A TTY?
Nov 22, 2009
Recently upgraded to Fedora 12 and I installed the Moblin Desktop Environment with
Code:
yum groupinstall "Moblin Desktop Environment" The DE works but there are no applications of anykind installed except for volume control and network devices, I can't even log out or shutdown without switching to a TTY.
I have used moblin before and I'm assuming I am just missing some part of the environment? How can I get those base apps installed?

I have a problem where the resolution during bootup, shutdown, switching users, and the theme icons look very grainy & cheap. It might have started when I booted in failsafe graphics mode and after that, it never went away. Could be wrong about how it happened but is there a way to get out of failsafe mode? Or a way to reconfigure default, normal graphics?

Recently I installed vncserver (tigervnc) on my desktop. Ever since my computer refuses to shutdown normally. At shutdown the following message pops up: Quote: System policy prevents stopping the system when other users are logged in Then I have to enter the root password to shutdown. If I stop vncserver before, the computer shuts down normally.

I have installed a cluster computer with 10 nodes . The manufacturer is HP . All nodes and the master node have redhat enterprise linux installed in them . When I shutdown the nodes from the master terminal using "shutdown -h now" they get shutdown . But they dont get completely turned off . This issue bothers me when the power supply is given , all nodes boot up simultaneously generating a huge heat .
Thing to note : When we shutdown our PC they get completely turned off . When the power supply is given , a press on the Power On button is required to boot the system. But , why does it not happpen in the case of cluster? Is there any other way of completely turning off the nodes from the master terminal ?

I am trying to switch desktops managers from GNOME to KDE followed the wiki page but can't seem to get it right as in my /etc/sysconfig folder there is no desktop file to be modified to tell my system to use KDE at startup. download a new F10/KDE live cd today and try the install that way if I get the chance to do that. But if I can't...

For some reason Ctrl+Alt+Fn doesn't work on my Fedora 13 workstation using the nvidia driver. I specified the following in my xorg.conf but it doesn'tption "DontVTSwitch" "off"It is probably not even an Xorg problem because VT switching doesn't work in runlevel 3 either.

In the upcoming days I will be formatting my F14 box and switching to F15. Now I have offered a friend to use some of my storage (8TB) as a ackup for her personal files/photos. I want to set it up so that she can be sure she is the only one having acces to it (so not even I can read them as root).How can I set this up. encryption? account configuration?
Most likely she will upload via secure FTP.She trusts me, but I want to provide her with the piece of mind that it is not accessible by anyone but her.

I'm running Fedora 15 64bit on a HP Elitebook 8740w. I have both Gnome and XFCE installed, and have only noticed this problem while using XFCE, but that may just be because I am using XFCE more than Gnome (that's another story - which I won't go into!). Anyhow, twice in the past 3 days I've been in the middle of using the PC, and it has "locked up". By that I mean, using the keyboard and mouse have no effect. The display does not change, moving the mouse does not move the cursor from it's current position. And keyboard commands seem to have no effect (I've tried ctrl-alt-backspace, ctrl-alt-delete, and alt-F1, alt-F2, etc.). The only way I can continue using the computer is to hold in the power button until it powers off.
I suspect, but can't be sure, that it may only be a problem while I'm in XFCE. The reason I say this is that the first time it happened, I was trying to do a screen capture using The Gimp while in XFCE. Today I also tried to do another screen capture (again whilst in XFCE), and X kicked me out back to the login prompt. I then logged into Gnome and was able to successfully do the screen capture. Later in the day I was using XFCE and programming in SpringSource Tool Suite, when the "lock up" occurred again, requiring me to switch the PC off again. I've had a bit of a look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and it finishes like this. I'm not sure if it is enough info to track down the problem though?

I have 2 workspaces and when i switch to the 2nd one (either with Ctrl-Alt-Left or by clicking with the mouse) after loging in, the desktop freezes. I have to do a Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill the xserver and log in again. Removing the workspace switcher and adding it again does not solve the problem. And I can't find any message in the logs.

i would like to make the switch to fedora but before i do want to find out whether i will have the same problem that i had with ubuntu in Fedora. Problem with Ubuntu:- The only way of running o/s ati drivers to optimise hd3000 series (r600) graphics card and opengl was by running kernel 2.6.32rc6 which renders the broadcom bcm4322 wireless card unoperational. Fedora 12 looks promising but i would like to know whether there is support for Broadcom bcm4322 wireless cards and how hard they are to get up and running.

I run in some trouble with my isdn card after switching from fedora 10 to fedora 13 (new installation, no upgrade) I made a default installation, after install and reboot/update I noticed that isdn4k-utils is not installed and I installed it manually. For setup of my isdn card I used system-config-network. But activate isdn (load kernel modules) fails, also with /etc/init.d/isdn start There is no isdn device: output cat /proc/net/dev

I have been running F12 w/ an Nvidia board (GE Force 5200) for some time now. I installed and configured that board as per the instructions on this forum (very good ones too!) and have had no problems, other than it would not connect directly to a digital/HDMI port, nor would it do vdpau, since it was an older card.
But now, I have a Radeon VisionTek 1550, that has dual outputs, one of which is DVI-D, and I have an adapter to HDMI that actually works well.
I have managed to remove most of the nvidia stuff from F12, in particular the kernel module. But I keep finding various libs getting loaded that are NVidia based. In particular, with xbmc it is looking for OpenGL rendering, and finds an NVidia version.
Sorry for the long diatribe, but how to I get rid of all of these references completely, without reinstalling fedora from scratch?
Also, another question about the radeon configuration: how do I enable and configure radeon's theatre mode via xorg.conf? FWIW: if I run aticonfig I get "no card found".

I have Fedora 15 installed in my PC and I use it both for gaming and work. Now the open source nouveau driver was working fine, until I had to install the nvidia driver so that I could play torcs, as I was unable to get good graphics in nouveau. Now, when using the nvidia driver, the gnome shell has become too slow and sometimes unworkable, though games run good. Is there any way so that I can use both the drivers and switch between them when needed (say use nvidia when gaming and nouveau while at work) without uninstalling and reinstalling them?
PS: when I boot up, the grub shows two options, one is the fedora with latest kernel and other is the old kernel. Is there a possible way that I use nouveau with old kernel and nvidia in the new kernel? This will really help in switching games and work.

As my inspirations forced me to download Kde desktop on my Fedora12 with default gnome desktop. It took me whole night to get the big download by -
"Yum install @kde-desktop"
It got installed successfully.
What I did after that was -
"switchdesk kde"
...Voila...and strange thing happened. The gnome remained there but all the kde features started getting included in there like koffice, kopete etc . Now I waited for around 3 hrs. but only lower task bar of kde got installed and that too very unstable. So I thought of logging out and starting a new session with kde but It never got logged in again. It froze at boot time with Fedora logo, damn.
I have two kernels installed and configured at boot, one is 2.6.31.X (default) and the other is 2.6.32.X which I installed to get my BCM4312 wireless activated and all the activity being done on this.

Almost every other time I run yum update, I'm getting mirror problems - this is losing all my confidence in Fedora for several reasons: a) it's wasting time - what should be 1-2 minute updates are taking 5-10 minutes and often (like tonight) not even completing b) since it keeps hanging and switiching mirrors during downloads I wonder if the updates are coming thru okay c) the fact this is not being seriously addressed makes me wonder re Fedora quality. Add to that the constant and real annoying kernel errors popping up re network manager and sierra wireless (even when my sprint card is not plugged in).

In Fedora 11 I cannot switch keyboard layouts between English-Russian-Ukrainian when using window managers other than Gnome/Metacity/Openbox. However, I can see my custom "us,ru,ua" layout in GDM. My "/etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi" file is as follows:
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <!-- -*- SGML -*- -->
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
<device>
<match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keymap">
<append key="info.callouts.add" type="strlist">hal-setup-keymap</append>
</match>
<match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keys">
<merge key="input.xkb.rules" type="string">base</merge>
<!-- If we're using Linux, we use evdev by default (falling back to keyboard otherwise). -->
<merge key="input.xkb.model" type="string">keyboard</merge>
<match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.kernel.name" string="Linux">
<merge key="input.xkb.model" type="string">evdev</merge>
</match>
<merge key="input.xkb.layout" type="string">us,ru,ua</merge>
<!-- <merge key="input.xkb.variant" type="string">,,winkeys</merge> -->
<merge key="input.xkb.options" type="string">grp:ctrl_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll</merge>
</match>
</device>
</deviceinfo>
The file "/etc/sysconfig/keyboard" is
Code:
KEYBOARDTYPE="pc"
KEYTABLE="ru-cs"
LAYOUT="us,ru,ua"
MODEL="pc105+inet"
OPTIONS="grp:ctrl_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll"
VARIANT=""
Does this problem persist in Fedora 12?

I recently switched my desktop environment from KDE-4.3.4 to GNOME-2.28-2 and I did that by installing most of the gnome-packages and uninstalling pretty much all of the kde-ones. After reboot everything worked fine except the file browser that doesn't seem to care about my feelings. It launches and when I try to kill the process the status changes from sleeping to uninterruptible and then back to sleeping. The only way is to reboot but that isn't a solution.Error while sending message: Did not receive a reply. I want to switch between my monitor in my office and a hd-ready TV in my living room which is connected via DisplayPort/HDMI. So I wrote the following script (called by nohup and the number for the desired config-file is given as an argument):
Code:
This basically works but I have two problems:
1) All currently opened Windows are gone after restarting X. So I need a more elaborate script
2) I cannot get the right configuration for my TV. The manual recommends 1280x768_60. This mode doesn't seem to be supported (xrandr doesn't list it).
Until now I use the following xorg.conf for TV:
Code:
With that configuration about 20px of each side of the desktop are hidden. The TV also displays an info that the signal is 1080i. The refresh rate is set to 50 instead of the desired 60. I tried to force 720p by adding the line Modes "720p". The rest of the file was mostly generated by the nvidia-driver.
So what can I do to: Keep my opened Windows when switching Displays See the whole Desktop on my TV and set the refresh rate to 60

I installed Fedora 15 on my netbook the other day and I decided that I will remove everything but the absolutely needed to make things lighter, faster and less time/power consuming. I thought that GDM isn't needed on a single-user machine. Maybe I can remove it and have a script run on boot and take care of (auto-)loging in and starting the DE? (Xfce, but I plan switching to openbox/fluxbox and 3rd party panels/widgets etc). Is it possible? (and does it worth it?)

I cannot locate shutdown log for Linux shutdown to check various activities carried out during shutdown. I can view Startup Log which is availble on console>Applications>System Tools>System Logs.
I have included Shutdown/Startup in dbora, so that Oracle 10gR2 Shutdown/Startup will be automated during OS Shutdown/Startup.
I want to check Shutdown log because Oracle Shutdown was not running, as from $ORACLE_HOME/shutdown.log contains no entries, where as startup log contains latest startup details.
That means here 2 issues are there. One, I want to locate OS Shutdown Log and the other being Why Oracle Shutdown not getting executed.
