Sometimes it does this and other times it does not. It has happened with 2 hard drives. When it formats the partition the bar stops and the mouse pointer graphics stops.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on a brand new 500GB hard drive I just purchased and installed in my machine. I boot from the CD and instruct Ubuntu to install to this drive and tell it to "erase and use the entire disk" for this 500GB drive. After moving forward from that, I see it saying a message about creating an ext4 partition for root "/" and then shortly after the entire install dialogue goes away. All I am left with is the little circle cursors spinning round (mouse input still works) and the installation background. The HDD activity light was still on though. I gave it about 3 hours before I finally gave up and tried again.
When I tried again, I saw that it did create two partitions (root and swap) during the last attempt. The same thing happened, although now even mouse input isn't responding so my system is completely locked up. HDD activity remains active this time as well. Running Ubuntu from the CD works fine. The only problem I saw with it was when I ran gparted from the CD and tried to manually create a ext3 partition on my new disk drive. When I tried that, I ran into a similar occurrence (couldn't run any programs, eventually system locked up) and had to reboot.
I have a second hard disk but I have a lot of valuable data on that and don't want to mess around with it. It could be a hardware failure, but that seems unlikely to me as this is a brand new Seagate disk drive. I suppose I could try installing it on a spare partition on my other drive and see what happens, but other than that I'm out of ideas.

But the installer doesn't allow me to set the partition as / without formatting. XFS is not one of the filesystems listed as options for formatting. How can I make Fedora do what I want?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've a flash drive that it's partitions formatted as fat32, ex4 and encrypted ext4. It works fine on the system that I've formatted it on, but when I try to use it on my other Linux distributions I get these problems:
* ext4 partition accessible by root only.
* after entering my pass-phrase I get
Code: /dev/mapper/udisks-luks-uuid-***** uid1000 is mounted What I'm asking for is a way to create the ext4 file system without being attached to some UID and to be accessible by any user.
It gets stuck on the boot screen with the status bar, or on the loggin screen. The only solution is to reset. After that it is usually fine for the day and will reboot fine, it's a dual boot and my boys use windos on it a couple times a day also, that's why it's getting rebooted so much.
Any possible reasons for this? Or, how can I kill the boot image and get a text based boot screen? I tried Startupmanager, but it doesn't seem to work on 9.10.
I am running Ubuntu 10.04. I have a HP Pavilion Dv7 Laptop, 4GB of ram, An AMD Turion X2 processor, my main HDD is 250GB Samsung and my other internal HDD is a 250GB Western digital. I am Very new to Ubuntu and the forums, So i wish to apologize if this is posted in wrong section. Now on to my problem, While using my computer the screen will go gray(all open windows), and my HDD light stays on. I never had this problem before on my other computer that has Ubuntu on it too. And as i said every window goes gray and the HDD light stays on and it happens randomly. It will come back to normal some times but others i have to Force Power down.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just installed 10.04 as a dual boot with Windows 7. I did a clean install removing my old 9.10 install.I really like all the changes I've seen so far and everything seems to work smoothly except when the HD is being used a lot everything freezes and then un-freezes again and again until the file operation has stopped.The problem really only comes up with heavy operations like moving large files (I moved a 10gb vdi from my Windows partition to Ubuntu) and when backintime does it's daily backup.ometimes I can continue using it then it'll freeze I wait.. can use it again for a bit then it will freeze again.'ve never had problems with transferring large files on the Windows 7 install so I don't think there's a hardware problem. I can't seem to find anything I've been searching for two days now. I did find something about a problem with backintime/ext4 partitions but the solution hasn't helped.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am not sure exactly what is going on, but my ASUS UL30a (X32a) keeps locking up until I press a key, then it seems to resume for a while.
At first I thought it was just the mouse, but I noticed that the screen stops refreshing also. Hitting the space key (or any other key) brings the systme back to life (until it happens again).
It is a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10, not much seems to be going on in the top list (compiz 1%, xorg 0.5%)
I am looking for ways to try and diagnose the problem (if not fix it )

I read somewhere that it is possible if there was ever a RAID configuration that there is possibly some META data left over on the Hard drive that needs to be erased. If this is the case I believe I have the command that will do so....BUT I do not know how to get to a terminal from the alternate install CD....is it possible?

I have installed Fedora 12 from the DVD with no apparent issues. It then had me reboot. The color bar goes all the way across the bottom of the screen and Fedora 12 turns white. The screen goes blank and the light is on for the floppy disk. Keyboard does not function and my LCD monitor says no input signal.If I hit esc key while it is trying to boot I see a lot of things being loaded but it is to fast to read what happens last.---------- Post added at 07:31 PM CST ---------- Previous post was at 09:44 AM CST ----------By searching the forum I found that by hitting esc repeatedly I can get to the Grub menu. Once there I edited the command line and added a 3 at the end of the line.I am now logged in as Root.

I've tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mandriva, openSuSE, Fedora, and several others. So far, openSuSE takes the cake in terms of what I need, speed, usability, etc. However, I have a soft spot for Fedora and I'm trying so hard to make things work, but I'm kind of at the end of the road unless you guys have some suggestions.

I was having mixed results, but I had also installed from a Fedora KDE LiveCD. I decided I'd try the full DVD release of Fedora 12 64 bit, so I installed it this evening.
To my disappointment, even the nomodeset parameter does nothing. I get to the blue screen where there's some kind of logo in the center that fills in with white. After it fills in, an F appears. That's where it stops. It just goes no further. Further adding to the confusion is the fact that the fix lists a kernel there, indicating (to me at least) that the kernel listed is when a fix was deployed. I have a newer kernel than that, and despite that I still have these issues.
So needless to say, I'm using my laptop as testing grounds to plop a different distro than Ubuntu on my laptop and 2 servers full time. I really want to make Fedora work, but at the same time I have to use what works for me. Not being able to boot and log in is kind of a big deal. :P
Is there anything I can do or try? I want to keep the OS's I run all the same, so if Fedora 12 bombs out on this laptop, it has no chance on the other servers I plan to run at work. So far openSuSE is running without a hitch but I'd really like to give Fedora 12 a chance....
I booted fedora from an live cd not i have a problem when i want to install fedora formatting is taking vey long its already busy for 1 hour and this is te second time im trying to install fedora does it need to take this long ? I've got an unexpected fault for the second time and pressed debug but nothing is happening keeps formatting.

However, I want to totally format the hard disk so I have no operating systems left on there.
I have created a usb boot disk for installing windows.
So I want to re-format the whole hard disk. Then boot up with the usb and install windows. Once I have done that. Then use the rest of the hard disk to install Fedora 14 from my other usb.
However, I am not sure how to completely format the hard disk. I want to start from a clean disk.
I recently installed fedora 9. Everything works fine after install (except sound but thats a different story). When i run updates everything seems to have worked fine but when i reboot afterwards i get to the login screen which works but as soon as i log in it freezes? the only way to restart is to press the power switch...

I remeber once there was a check into creating new partition form, but maybe i am confusing with fedora or other distros. Now I just want to double-check before I mess up again - I've backup-ed all the stuff i wanna keep and want to format the old partition. preferably I'd like to extend my current partition to the whole drive (or just make an empty partition for media if that works). So how do I do this the easiest way, and what would be the best option (i.e. 1 or 2 partts.)?

I recently purchased a Quadro FX 4800 and tried to install it on Fedora 10. During the installation, Fedora didn't recognize my new graphics card and began installing the OS in text mode. I stopped the installation and tried to start over, this time I passed the following command: linux resolution=1024x768. I then proceeded with the installation, and again, I was posed with a text mode installation. I continued with the text mode install and when Fedora was done installing, I rebooted and system just locked up.
At this point I was frustrated, so I reinstalled my old 8800 graphics card and started a new install with something that worked in the past. When the install was done, I loaded the latest NVIDIA drivers and the rebooted. I reinstalled my new graphics card (Quadro FX 4800) then powered up my system. I thought everything was good to go and all of a sudden my system flickered and then locked up during the 'Anacron' testing phase. I then rebooted with the "Ctrl+Alt+Del" hotkeys, but my system always locks up during the 'Anacron' testing sequence. I am aware that the Quadro FX 4800 is a few months old, but how can I get it to work in linux? It has gotten so bad, that I had to resort to using MS Vista.

I've tried installing Fedora 12 4 times now, and each time it has stopped at a different spot. This time it loaded 1087 of 1147 packages before it froze. The first time it only loaded 58 packages. The other two times it got a little further. This last time I thought it was going to work because I selected the basic video driver. I thought that was the prolem. This is a very old pc, I think it has an AMD 2200 cpu. Any ideas as to watch I should do to proceed? I've had other versions of Fedora on it, thought I'd go with the latest.

However, because of space shortage on the disc (didn't bring my external HDD's with me) I could not "afford" to make the partition bigger than about 7GB. Turns out that's not quite enough. So I thought I'd try to resize the partition. Booted from my Ubuntu LiveCD and entered the partition manager. I'm able to tell the program that I want to resize the Linux-partition (so it sets the now freed space as "unused", but when I chose to "resize/move" on the XP-partition I do not have any free space. Does this mean that I have to resize the Linux-partition (until now I didn't actually resize it, only set the job as "pending" hoping that I could select both to shrink the Linux-partition and extend the XP-partition in one session), or do I have to format the XP-partition and make a new one (larger this time), then reinstall XP?

I'm a big fan of the NSLU2-Linux project so I've been doing some developments for this platform for the last three years. In order for the end users to test my applications, I initially created an USB image with everything bundled into it. Then, they only had to download the image and decompress (dd) it into an USB pendrive with capacity equal or greater than 4 GB. The fact is that this has brought me lots of problems in the practice since my Web server hardly accepts long file transfers.
Moreover, flash spaces beyond 4GB are wasted. As result, I'm now considering a different approach as I don't know how to do it. Well, I've thought that I could maybe create an USB disk image only with the root file system partition. Then, the first time a script runs, it creates a home partition and formats it into the rest of the space available in the pendrive. There is maybe some command-line alternative to fdisk without having the user to interact during the format process... ??
So I recently installed openSUSE KDE (latest build, don't know the number?). total linux noob, been a windows user all my life. right now i'm dual-booting between win 7 and opensuse KDE. i originally alotted for a parsley 10gb only to use as a backup whenever my windows inevitably starts having problems and i have no access or means to repair it/ use as a secure place to scan my windows partition and external drives for viruses. i want to expand my opensuse partition.
so my problem is this: i have a 200gb windows partition, a 15 gb partition (U) i set up to do file swapping cross-os (which i couldnt figure out how to work, btw. formatted it in FAT32). and my 10 gb suse partition (O). i tried using the built-in KDE partition manager to shrink or completely do away with U, and expand the suse partition. the problem is my suse partition is ecapsulated by an extended partition, whatever that is, and suse has its own 1.5 gb "swap" partition. after shrinking U i tried expanding O, but it said i was already at max size. tried expanding extended, also didnt work, same goes for the 1.5 gb suse swap partition.
i read in another post that i could do the resizing via some sort of bootable disc, the only problem is that i have no access to cd or dvd blanks, and i have no usb thumb drives just 2 external hd's - 1tb and 250gb. so how can i go about expanding my opensuse partition? the easiest way i could think of is to just reformat/repartition from windows, and reinstall opensuse from my boot dvd. only problem with that is i cant SEE my suse partition from windows...
i imagine i could also just boot from the dvd and run the installer again, and use the partitioner built into the installer, but i didn't really feel comfortable with it the first time around. im know my way around a computer but all of a sudden it blindsided me with a ton of options i know nothing about, it was a little too complicated.
